Soccer9
Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere already, but the CSA newsletter is announcing that CONCACAF has granted Canada the right to host the Olympic qualification tournament! http://www.canadasoccer.com/bootroom/Boot_Room_V03n03_pdf_www.pdf Pretty cool... our turn to shine. :-)
Vic
Thanks for the link, and yes that came out around the time we learned the WC qualifiers went to Mexico. Here's the link to the release: http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/FIFA_WWC/olympic.asp As it's in the early spring it will likely be hosted on the west coast. Vic
Never thought of the old welcome to early April in Edmonton or St. John's. That will take the latin flair out of you. The Canadian men defeated the USA in St. John's in 1972 and we also beat Honduras to qualify for the World Cup there in 1985. The women played two friendlies on the same grounds in 2006, but the only places in Canada our women have played official qualifiers are Montreal, Etobicoke and Victoria. And the games in the east were all in the summer.
Soccer9
Vic, oh ya now it does ring a bell! Getting old... Going to be a busy year for Women's soccer in Canada, with 2012 U17 and U20 WC's; and Olympic Qualifying & hopefully the Olympic tournament also! CSA better start saving up for that! Blue and White Army
As it's in the early spring it will likely be hosted on the west coast. Hope so. Vancouver hasn't hosted the national team (of either gender / any age group) in years.
Blue and White Army
According to Bob Mackin, the entire tournament may be held at BC Place: http://twitter.com/#!/bobmackin/statuses/62393856381030400
cwntfan
All for Canada hosting the Olympic Qualifiers, really excited about the opportunity, but all in games in BC? What about the east? Yeah the west hasn't seen any games in a few years but before that the east didn't see any game in a long time. Since it looks like Toronto won't be hosting any WWC games in 2015, why not have games there? Sky Dome could be a second venue too. Not too far from each other either.. Soccer 19
http://caribbeanfootballunion.org/home/2010pdf/womensolyformat.pdf More than likely the qualifiers will be on the west coast especially if the dates are Novemeber as inidicated by the CFU. Vic
No worries, the East will catch up and get their big games in 2014/15. If we're hosting the Caribbean and Central America in November we should be playing in Newfoundland or Edmonton. The last time our men qualified for the World Cup was 1986 and we beat Costa Rica in St. John's in September. They won't be playing beach soccer or relaxed or with rhythm when it feels like they're in a freezer. Major league tragic if they're all going to be played on turf though and surprised CONCACAF went for it. Victoria getting some action on grass would have been pretty nice. Vic
The only CONCACAF final on turf I can remember in any tournament (men's, women's, 17's, 20's, senior's, Olympic qualifiers, Gold Cup, World Cup qualifiers) was the U20s in Ottawa in 2004 when Josée Bélanger scored late in overtime to beat the Americans. Have there been others? Can you see a T&T / Mexico men's Gold Cup final on it? Women's soccer is notoriously unsettled compared to men's. Turf speeds up the game and unsettles it more. Throw in knees and turf and women are a bad combination all round. If we were playing under Pellerud the turf would be prodigal. We still do to a pretty big extent, but this time round the main benefit will go to teams like your Soca Warriors.
hc1
First: Yaaaaah for BC Place - where & when do I buy my tickets!?!?!? Second: For something like this, wouldn't they bring in grass for the tournament?
