Alberto7
Found this excellent article by Philippe Germain of Radio-Canada about the upcoming off season for the Impact. You can read it (in French) here: http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/soccer/2010/10/18/002-germain11-lundi.shtml It got me tt thinking. Who stays and who goes for the Impact? My 2 cents is that they have should only keep players who have a chance of making the MLS squad the following year. Don't bother with players who have no realistic chance of playing in MLS(veterans and younger players). Obviously there are some players who have contracts through 2011 which complicates it a bit. Here is a list of players who had contracts ending this season: Matt Jordan Serge Djekanovic Hicham Aaboubou Wesley Charles Stephen deroux Nevio Pizzolitto Tony Donatelli Patrick Leduc Anthony Le Gall Eduardo Sebrango So who do you think needs to stay in 2011 and who leaves? Personally, I think Pizzolitto should stay although I can't see him in MLS. I'd also keep Donatelli and Djekanovic. I love Sebrango but, sadly, he is too old to play in MLS in 2012. Grizzly
Of the players whose contracts are ending I would only re-sign Jordan, Donatelli and LeGall as guys who have a chance to play in MLS. I might sign Pizzolitto to a one year contract as well as he is a usefull NASL player and you can't change the whole team over night but I also don't see him in MLS. Grizzly
Agourram is not worth keeping? His contract is not expiring. He is worth keeping and shows some talent but really didn't produce much this year, 2 goals in 22 games. He needs to be much better next year if he will stick with the team in MLS. youllneverwalkalone
It will be interesting to see if Montreal makes a series of signings to next year with front loaded contracts to circumvent the MLS salary cap. My sense is that Vancouver did do this, but in a conservative manner so as not to raise too many eyebrows. As a conspiracy theory de jour, I wonder if Rochat/Zurich and Chiumiento have been given some specific intructions by the Caps? Rochat started almost every match for Zurich the last few years, but has only played 3 this season. Davide scored 11 goals as a midfielder last year for Lucern, and now -save the match against you lot- does not look good enough for USL. Have they been asked to dog it to keep under the radar? Vancouver has been able to scout cheaper regions of the world in 2010 and sign a few guys who may pan out for MLS. Montreal seems more comfortable signing out of Italy/France/Portugal. Those areas can be expensive, so there must be a temptation to get around the salary cap/DP regulations with some creative contracts. It will be interesting to see what MLS will tolerate in this regard, and how much Montreal will push it.

As far as Rochat goes, it is pretty common for clubs to not start a player who will be leaving the team as long as they have someone comparable to replace him with which a probably would be the case with a team like Zurich. Rochat will probably only play if his future replacement falters.

SteveBeau
As much as I love Matt Jordan I'm not sure I would sign him back..He's getting old and seems to be getting more and more prone to injuries. I would seriously consider trying to sign someone like Bill Gaudette. He has proven himself to be a great big game performer while playing against superior opposition in the CCL over the last 3 years.

Is he the outside back with wheels or am I confusing him with someone else? Deroux's been replaced by Billy this season, and hasn't been in Montreal for the last couple of months. He is the player you had in mind, who is a defensive liability (he is a natural midfielder), and he fell out of favour with the team. He shouldn't be back in 2011. As for the 2 GK's, they would probably be No. 2 and No.3 Gk's for the MLS squad at this point. I have them listed based strictly on potential. Keano
I really like Aboubou but not sure if he'd cut it in the MLS. I'd probably keep Placentino around as a super sub in order to have another domestic who can be dangerous for short periods.

I think he has the talent to be there, he just has to figure out a way to be more consistent. I hope that he'll use the off season to sit down with the technical team, and set out a plan to make that happen.

He just turned 35, and I think his best years are behind him. 2011 should be the year that we give a young talented GK, (not Srdjan Djekanović) the opportunity to develop, or bring in Gaudette as mentioned by Steve Beau. He's unquestionably young and quite possibly very talented. At the same time, I doubt he's ready to start in MLS just yet and this way he could potentially grow into a decent MLS-calibre keeper, perhaps even moving up with Impact in a year-and-a-half. shawn_strat
I agree that we should sign Gaudette. He has been fantastic in Puerto Rico. Matt Jordan has been one of my favourites since I began following the team (yes, I only became a fan in the last few years), but I think he has passed his best-before date. The reserves (Mayard to Provost) are a huge question mark as far as MLS is concerned. I think Badescu and Provost have a long, long way to go before they are up to MLS calibre. They have potential for sure and I would love to see the Impact play them a lot next year to see what they can do. It is clear for me that the Impact need an MLS calibre keeper(perhaps this will only happen at the expansion draft in Nov 2011) or sign someone like Gaudette, as already mentioned. Provost I don't think can play in the MLS but I hope he can prove me wrong. Best Academy GK is Crépeau, but he's so young that I would not even consider him for MLS yet. Cossette I think can play in MLS in 2 years, and maybe give Bonheur Aubey a shot, but that's it for the young guys.
