dr. killinger
Count Matt Lam as another FC Edmonton product to follow Lodeweges to Japan... Really? J-league2 is a decent step up from the NASL. Do you have a link or source?

dr. killinger
I've also heard this. Apparently Sam Lam is still with the club though. Looks like Lodeweges was quite impressed with him. Hopefully he gets a roster spot. JEF United was a spot away from being promoted back into the J-league1. Could be interesting; I'll keep my eyes out. hellocanadasoccer
Matt Lam left for a one year loan deal to JEF United. Undisclosed fee. Sam Lam is not signed yet but still training with the team. http://the11.ca/2011/02/07/big-in-japan-another-fc-edmonton-player-leaves-for-jef-united/

coppercanuck
I love this. Matt will get a chance to play on a different stage and FCE was not left high and dry.
jedinathan
I completely agree. I had a "oh great, not another one" moment when I heard, but I like the fact that another young Canadian kid has a chance to go show his stuff, and FCE has been properly compensated for him. Good on the team. Just wanted to point out that in the article posted above, it mentions that Sinkgraven has 19 (before Matt left) players, and wants to get up to 26. So assuming that Sam Lam is still in the mix (also in the article), there are another 7 players signed, or at least seriously being considered. hellocanadasoccer
I've heard they continuously had trialists in, and also have a few players that played with the UofA Golden Bears this past fall. I assume they still have their amateur status and thats likely why they are not included on the website roster.
hellocanadasoccer
I hear from a pretty good source that it was a very fair (to be conservative) deal for both parties. I listened to a radio broadcast done my Mel Kowalchuk (gm of FCE) regarding the loan deal, and he seemed to be trying to make it appear as though FCE got "minimal" compensation for Matt Lam, and their reason for agreeing to the deal was because they did not want to hold Lam back from the opportunity. 6 figures is not a minimal number, especially given that the club has yet to even play a league match yet. I don't think FCE should be complaining! It's a win-win situation for all parties. Hopefully FCE can build a good relationship with JEF United and they can pull a player or two from their first or second team roster for a loan deal. But if it wasn't about the money, the management and ownership of FCE is literally insane. Taking a 21 year old Canadian who hasn't kicked a ball in competitive anger for your club and selling him for 6 figures is quite the accomplishment. tovan1
This deal is good for both sides. Lam gets to try his luck in Japan and FC Edmonton gets a good transfer in return. If it is indeed six figures, that is no small sum for a D2 club that hasn't even played a competitive match yet. It'll be interesting to see how Lam does in Japan as it's considered the top league in Asia. We've been very Euro-centric so far when it comes to our players going abroad for development/opportunities. The J.League is a good league, fairly technical, and pays well too if I'm not mistaken, not a bad place to develop IMO.

Taking a 21 year old Canadian who hasn't kicked a ball in competitive anger for your club and selling him for 6 figures is quite the accomplishment. Agreed. It's definitely an accomplishment. I agree that it's important for them to let people know that it wasn't only about the money, but also about the development of the player. I guess I just don't understand why Kowalchuk would repeatedly refer to the money as minimal. If Matt Lam was such a valuable player to the club (voted most valuable player on the website by fans), why would you want to tell FCE fans that you gave him up before the most important season of the franchise without getting good compensation in return? I think it would have been a better marketing tactic to present the situation as it is - a good player was given a great chance and not held back by his club, the club was compensated in return, and a relationship with a well known Japanese team has taken its roots. As a business person and a fan of FCE, that sounds like a great deal to me - why not present it that way to the public?
Keegan
I can't provide a written source, but the transfer was for $200K. So let me get this straight A second division J League 2 payed $200k for a 6 month loan for an unproven 21 year old Canuck who hasn't played a pro game? Nice hahaha Edmonton took that deal and ran with it, they must have thought someone was pulling their leg. The dutch boys must have really rated Lam for them to say something to their new owners who then dish out that cash for a LOAN!?

Keegan
I also find that number unbelievable, to be honest. Me too, maybe the full 200k is part of the option. Maybe for the loan alone they just payed 20-50k.
