Ya I figured... I laughed. Odd that they cleared the status entirely...

EDIT: I started wondering about Preki after they took down the facebook announcement... BUT through the infalible Wiki, Preki is apparently rumored to be the new coach of DC United

If DCU hires Preki it will probably be for the same reason TFC got Mo, he still has a valid contract with the league so they need to foist him on somebody because they are still paying him.

DC has already announced that they've promoted Ben Olsen to the fulltime role of head coach.

Got some evidence for that? TFC went after Frank Yallop for the job first, which suggests they were very much in control of the process, given there is no precedent that I can think of where a coach/GM has been foisted on a team. It is only player contracts that are held by the league under the single entity model, the coaching and front office side of operations is handled directly by each franchise.

Was randomly surfing at work today...

FCE has updated their website to include a 2011 team roster (so far).

Here's who's been added/still around:

Rein Baart

Shaun Saiko

Mutanda Kwesele

Chris Lemire

Kyle Yamada

Michael Cox

André Duberry

Paul Hamilton

Chris Kooy

This being said, Matt Lam was also quoted last week in an article on FCEdmonton.com. Not sure if this means he's with the team, or if his contract just expired.

How has this Michael Cox not been given a look with the U20s? He scored twice in his debut and the club's versus MTL as an 18 year old and I was reading an english web site review of the Pompey match and he was rated well enough.

Seems to have fallen through the cracks. If I'm one of the MLS squads, given his age and potential, he's getting signed away pretty quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto and Vancouver steal some of the younger players. I heard the Lam bros did pretty well in the friendlies and remember that Saiko had a good trial with the Dynamo last year. It would at least make sense for the MLS teams to schedule some early pre-season friendlies to do some scouting.

Off-Season Trials Continue at FCE

Robbie Tice Robbie Tice

Jimmie Mayaleh Jimmie Mayaleh

With the 2011 NASL season quickly approaching, FC Edmonton is looking Coast-to-Coast for some of the top talent in the country.

The latest two players to join the squad for a week-long trial hail from opposite sides of the country but they both have the same soccer goals; to become professionals.

Robbie Tice is a 20-year-old Midfielder from Vancouver. He grew up playing in local leagues on the West Coast before making the jump to the Vancouver Whitecaps Youth Program for four years. From there, Tice made his way to Europe where he had stints with Ayr United in the Scottish Second Division; a semi-pro team in England called Nantwich Town and finally in Scandinavia with Norwegian team Bodø/Glimt.

Tice has been in Edmonton since Jan. 9 and he said he’s thoroughly impressed with the level of professionalism at FCE.

“I’m actually really impressed by everything here so far,” he said. “It’s really professionally done. The training is really good, the coaching staff seems great and to compare it to the clubs I’ve been with in Europe, it’s actually surprised me a bit because it’s on par.”

Jimmie Mayaleh’s road to Edmonton came from the other side of the country; Charlottetown, P.E.I. to be exact. But the 22-year-old Striker has a similar soccer background to his Vancouver-based counterpart.

Mayaleh played three seasons at UPEI with a two-month trial at Dutch club NEC Nijmegen mixed in. After his third year at university, Mayaleh joined PDL side Thunder Bay Chill SC for a season before being discovered by FC Edmonton’s Director of Soccer Operations at Senior Men’s Nationals and invited to Edmonton for the week-long trial.

“The level of play here is good, it’s what I expected,” Mayaleh said. “I’ve seen USL games and I’ve played against players from the USL, so I knew what to expect.”

Both players have been evaluated by FC Edmonton coaching staff throughout the week and a decision will be made on them over the weekend.

Great news indeed. I'm glad to see the FO has gotten their act in gear for updating the fans on the roster and who they're looking at for next season. I'm also impressed to see they're posting stories before the NASL posts them now. Interesting about Carolina, but I'm glad to hear that the season will be getting finalized as soon as that situation cools down over there.

I've noticed FCE has really gone with a young squad. Hopefully they play well and have a strong first season. It would be great for these young guys to develop but also to be able to keep around FCE for a few years. If the young guns are good enough they will soon find themselves on a Canadian MLS team or perhaps abroad.

I get the feeling that Edmontons front office would like to hope they could well be an MLS club in development. Unfortunatley this squad would likley be well developed by then.

Still, Baby steps... Baby steps.

It would be nice to see a bunch of 'Kids' pulling up some trees in the NASL and the V.

If the big wheel start mentioning them on BBCs up all night that would be a success of sorts.

Heres hoping.

Here are 2 Alberta boys that were on the Whitecaps residency team last year but don't seem to be around anymore.

Tyrin Hutchings

Charlie Trafford (cousin of former Whitecap Mason Trafford)

Both played for Calgary Foothills Crew in 2009. Probably not ready to be on the first team roster, but I'd guess that they would be worth a look for the youth team or reserves.

If they haven't gone elsewhere, I'd be seriously suprised if they weren't resigned. FCEdmonton.com had a poll up asking who the most influential player was in 2010 from FCE. Matt Lam won with 26% of the votes.

I'm really hoping its just a timing issue, rather than the team passing on him. The wikipedia entry doesn't say where he went, just that his contract expired. I'm interested in the medical exams happening tomorrow. I doubt they'll be open to the public, but I'd LOVE it if FCE posted a few pictures or a video from it. It would give some more insight into who's trying out for and who is playing for the team.
