The North American Soccer League (“NASL”) is proud to announce the admission of a new member team based in San Antonio, Texas, which will begin playing in 2012. The expansion team was organized by native San Antonian Gordon Hartman, who recently developed the 14-field STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex and neighboring Morgan’s Wonderland, the world's first-ultra accessible family fun park designed specifically for children and adults with special needs and the entire community to enjoy.

Did anyone notice that the header at the top with the teams has also changed? It now shows Edmonton for 2011, San Antonio for 2012, along with St Louis, Carolina, Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Montreal, Vancouver, Minnesota, Rochester and Puerto Rico. No more Atlanta.

YES! I have been trying to google news that since. What is going on?

I recall from a post awhile ago that there was a meeting of all the owners and that Atlanta didn't even show up. They also haven't updated thier website in about a year now, and I'm getting the sense that they've pulled out of the league.

I'm just glad to hear some news about the future of the league and some positive news for a long-term growth of the league.

2012 is a long way away :) . So much can change in division 2 football in 12 months. Anyway, maybe the announcement of San Antonio can help push Austin to commit to NASL. The USL's positioning as a regional D3 league should also leave expansion outside the US Northeast to the NASL.

I'm surprised we haven't heard anything of expansion to California. Only the cities of LA (2 teams) and San Jose are represented in MLS so the state seems wide open for soccer entrepreneurs at the 2nd tier.

They might just not be able to meet Division II requirements. A stadium that can sit at least five thousand spectators (doesn't have to be soccer specific), and an ownership group with at least twenty million dollars. My guess is that if they took a year hiatus and haven't updated their website since joining the NASL in 2009 then my guess is that they folded their cards and left the table. I hope they join the USL Pro which supports smaller clubs and tries to make them fiscally stable and Atlanta is a local team for that league and little in the way of travel costs.
