nolando
On June 7, 1987, the 86ers took to the pitch for the first time, thrilling a home crowd of 7,646 with a 4-2 victory over Edmonton Brickmen. I remember it well because my dad took me to the game. Today, 23 years later, I got to take my six-month-old son to the last-ever regular season game at Swangard. Beautiful day, great crowd, exciting match and awesome running into a few V's. A memory I'll never forget. Cheers lads! Thoughts on the game? This means they will play Timbers for two more, right? Grizzly
I was switching between this game and St-Louis-Rochester (we are hoping to play Rochester in the first round so we can have another road trip but not looking promising). From what I saw of the game, I thought Vancouver was a bit lucky to get a tie. I can't say I am very impressed with how the Caps have been playing lately. nolando
game highlights: Dunfield worked tirelessly. He has pretty good chemistry with Nash given how little time they have actually played together. Porter had a lot of time on the ball after coming in around the hour mark. Great cross on the second goal. Is he both-footed? I was also impressed with the work-rate of Knight and Wagner. It seems they still, almost a year later, miss the big men they used to have in the box in guys like Gbeke, Haber and perhaps even Charles. Strider
It was nice to see a good effort from Arnoux. Maybe he'll be worth the allocation ranking pick.
tmcmurph
Good game. For a while there I though the Timbers were going to take another one from us. We would not hear the end of that one from them if that had happened. Dunfield was great. That is exactly the type of player you want. Touch, work rate, good passes (receiving and making), total pain for the other team to deal with and very fun to watch. Porter, wow. Real good show for the res player on what I think was his first appearance with the first team. We needed to win by 3 goals to claim second seed and we all knew that wasn't likely. So we play them twice more in the first round of the playoffs. Kind of nice actually because the teams don't have far to travel and the games between these 2 are always excellent, exciting matches. Arnoux finally looked good. Not just his goal but the rest of his play as well. As a domestic he might stick with the team if he can keep it going. We'll have to see about the allocation and what MLS decides. Akloul got back on the field to double his playing time this year. As part of the wall he got hit in the face with a point blank shot at the end of the game. He was down for a bit but seemed to be laughing when getting attention from the trainer after the game. Must have felt good to get hit with the ball again. That or he finds it funny that he gets smoked every 20 minutes of playing time. Hopefully he's okay. PS. The second Portland goal was offside. Just watched the highlights posted on the Caps site. Oh well, that's soccer.
foreverthursday
I am very excited for the next MLS season when these two teams are involved. The timber army and the south siders are great supporter groups. Throw in Seattle and the Northwest will be a great rivalry struggle.
Allison A
PS. The second Portland goal was offside. Just watched the highlights posted on the Caps site. Oh well, that's soccer. I'm not sure what video you saw but he was obviously onside. Here is the moment of the pass from the same video with the pass having left Ryan Pore's foot: I was up there and posted a match report: http://www.soccercityusa.com/timbers/van100210.htm And photos: http://www.soccercityusa.com/timbers/van100210-pics.htm I will have more photos of the day's festivities up tomorrow. As always, I enjoyed my trip up there and you guys have great fans, and look forward to a great playoff series this week, and seeing you all up in MLS next year. We just all need to hold our nose for awhile about halfway between our respective cities and all is well.

We'll give you that one just because we're going to win the next 2 Cheers If Luca had held line it would have been a clear cut call. FIFA was supposed to adjust the rule to any part of the body being onside is onside. It hasn't been called that way around the world but based on the rule I would say onside. It's going to be a great first round for sure. Hopefully, we get Montreal in the final as well, to end our div 2 days in a rivalry, I'd say derby, but that guy who owns the poutine shop on Dunsmuir and his g'friend hardly count as away support! Any part ?? WTF? I didn't hear about that one. May as well do away with offsides altogether. His little toe was still onside So I guess by that rule he was onside by about an ankle. Too funny. I learn something new every day. I think we should just play outdoor futsal.

I tried to find a link but couldn't so(???), during a world cup preview they said officials were "instructed" to determine level in favour of the offensive player "if any part of their body" was level...I took that to mean torso moreso than toe but in the Timber goal I would say his hips were level with the defender. I remember when I was younger, as a defender we could play the ball back to the keeper and they could pick it up. edit: the closest I can see is that in earlier editions of the laws of the game mention a player IS offside if any part of their body is past the second last defender and that is no longer in the rules. Anyway, I'm done looking. I'm sure we'll be arguing offsides til the day I die!
tmcmurph
It's all about goals! I'm sure we'll be arguing offsides til the day I die! It seems like every game has offside disputes doesn't it? Goal line tech first then we'll work on automated offsides calls. I wonder what effect it would have on the game if there were no offsides? It works pretty good for futsal and it would stretch the players out across the whole field from end to end creating a lot of space. New rules of the game. No offsides and no sliding tackles. I think it would lead to a lot of long balls but also a lot of goals. Apparently Blatter mentioned it. That or the old NASL 35 yard offside instead of center or you can only be offside in the penalty box. I would like to see some games tried under different rules. Personally I think technology for offside calls would be the greatest addition to the game. It is possible http://broadcastengineering.com/products/evs-unveil-automated-graphic-0909/
