Canucks in Germany Season - August 2010

Hold on to your hats as another exciting season kicks off this weekend with the Bundesliga 1 and Bundesliga 2 finally back in action.

Friday:

Bundesliga 2

The much anticipated debut of Rob Friend for Hertha BSC is featured in the Bundesliga 2 2010-2011 season opener as the Berlin club is at home vs Rot-Weiss Oberhausen.. Hertha will be playing a 4-2-3-ROBFRIEND lineup to take advantage of the Canadian giant up front. Get 'er done Rob!!!

Saturday

Bundesliga 1

The man who gets little respect from our national team coaches is again the only starter in the top flight this season. With Geromel still getting back to full fitness, Kevin McKenna will be at centre-half as FC Koeln host newly promoted FC Kaiserslautern.

No sign of Paul Stalteri in Borussia Moenchengladbach's plans as they open at home against 'the Club' FC Nuernburg.

Bundesliga 2

Kicker doesn't have him listed but a good chance that Marcel de Jong will be starting for FC Augsburg as they take on FC Ingolstadt (Lassonde is with the Bavarian club but not likely to start). Augsburg have ambitions to promote this season under head coach Jos Luhukay (the man who led Rob Friend and Borussia Moenchengladbach to promotion a few season ago) and Marcel de Jong looks to be part of that effort. 'The Canadian international with the Dutch passport' scored a wonder goal last week as he got some action with the Augsburg reserves.

Liga 3

Nik Ledgerwood looks to have lost his starting role for SV Wehen Wiesbaden (2W-1L-1D-7pts-7th) as they are away to Eintracht Braunschweig (3W-0L-0D-9pts-3rd). Nik has a muscle strain suffered in an exhbition against Bayer Leverkusen.

The talk of Liga 3, Olivier Occean, is set to start with high-flying Kickers Offenbach (4W-0D-0L-12pts-1st) as they host title challengers Jahn Regensburg (4W-0L-0D-12pts-2nd -- on Goals Scored) to decide the league leaders early in the season.

Sunday

Bundesliga 2

Adam Straith is in a struggle to shrug off an injury from his DFB-Pokal game last weekend but should be ready to start for Energie Cottbus as they host legendary Fortuna Dusseldorf. Note that Adam has been moved from his left-back position (a new one for him last season) to a more familiar centre-half role.

Friend suffered a head injury in the early minutes, struggled to keep his balance but had tom come out 18' in. Bad for Rob Friend. However, his 17 yr old sub (Djurican) scores twice to allow Hertha a 3-2 comeback win in their opener.

Big Kev went 90 minutest in Colognes 3:1 homedefeat against the Red Devils. Cologne scored early but a red card for defenseman Mohamad helped K´town to come back in the second half.

Oliver Occean also played the full distance in Offenbachs 2:1 victory against Regensburg. Did not score, winning goal for Offenbach was scored in minute 91 so they will stay on top.

Apparently he hurt himself on an attempted bicycle kick just 39 seconds into his debut. The translation made it sound like he had a fit and perhaps made angry gestures at coach Markus Babbel upon his substitution. Babbel said something to the effect of,

It was not easy.

I was totally shocked. Rob looked dazed, as if he had had left hook in boxing, so he was. knocked out in round one!"

Can we kiss him goodbye for the friendlies in Canada?

Adam Straith had been questionable due to injury, but played 90 minutes in central defense for Cottbus who beat Dusseldorf 2-0. He picked up a yellow card in the 58th minute.

Marcel de Jong did not start yesterday, but came on in the 83rd minute for Augsburg, who won 4-1 at Ingolstadt.

RW Ahlen host red-hot league leaders Kickers Offenbach and Olivier Occean.

Liga 3

SV Wehen Wiesbaden host Carl Zeiss Jena with Nik Ledgerwood still out rehabbing from a muscle pull.

Marcel de Jong on the bench as Augsburg host Paderborn.

Comes on as a late sub for the goal scorer as FC Augsburg off to a perfect start with a 2nd win today, 1-0 over Paderborn.

Not Canuck related but of great interest to this Canuck, massive win by newly promoted FC Kaiserslautern today as they drop Bayern Munich 2-0 to get their 2nd win and counting on their return to the Bundesliga. How sweet is that Frank?

Anything to be concerned about there? Surely he didn't move to Germany 2 to become a squad player, so is he still recovering?

Ahlen 1 - 1 Kickers Offenbach after 30 min

Occean with his 5th of the season.

Edit: now 3-2 for Kickers after 50 min and Occean added a 2nd goal. 6 goals in 6 games.

Final score 3-3. OO with 2 goals and you have to wonder why he wasn't called for the 2 friendlies considering is well into season right now and in a goalscoring form. Anyways, that's the first game Offenbach hasn't won this season, 6-0-1 in all competition so far.

Game ends at 4-2 with McKenna scoring in stoppage time. Pizarro subbed off on 40 minutes (injury?)

Strained thigh muscle. Doubt we'll see him next week.

It's probably because he's playing third division football.

There are 500 players who are playing 3rd division in Germany. We are talking about one of the top player in that division and probably the best striker of the top team right now.

Let's also remember that Jackson and Gerba were playing 3rd division in similar leagues when they were called in the last few years, so I can't see why Hart couldn't gave a chance to OO. Anyways, he's better calling him in October.

^ It's also worth pointing out that this particular third division is likely the best in the world. And as always, the argument that a guy playing is generally a better bet that a guy getting 10 minutes every few weeks. Hopefully, as loyola mentions, we will see him against Ukraine.

Highlights of OO here:

http://www.hr-online.de/website/rubriken/sport/index.jsp?rubrik=55641&key=standard_document_39661117&mediakey=fs/heimspiel/20100828_heimspiel_ahlen_vs_offenbach&type=v

First goal is an easy tap in on a rebound and the second one is a tough header despite being quite close to the goal.

OO set up a nice chance for one of his teammate when the score was 3-3 but unfortunately he missed.
