CSL 2010 Week 14

Recommended Posts

Result of the Friday August 6th, 2010 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles vs Hamilton Croatia played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:00pm.

23 min...White Eagles Shawn Brown GOAL...SWE Milos Scepanovic cornerkick from right has Brown on left post in crowd of players nod 3 yard header into short side of net beyond goalie Cameron McKay.

Final Score:......Serbian White Eagles........1......Hamilton Croatia......0...........

Attendance was about 1000 fans with about a quarter travelling Croatia fans. This was the biggest CSL crowd I've seen this year. First flares were lit at 53 minutes. This game was a Rogers Community Channel game of the week and was broadcast live. A possible crisis may have been settled as rumours were the City of Toronto were not going to let Rogers game crews set up their mobile equipment until one hour before game time which Rogers said was impossible to do with such a short time. Therefore Rogers would not broadcast any games from Toronto any longer (that potentially affects five teams that play within the City limits). No problem tonight but now I've heard a bit more detail from the play-by-play guys that this may only be a crisis at Lamport Stadium (TFC Academy--some games and Portugal FC). The City doesn't want have to staff/pay their security to monitor the equipment set up before the game.

There was a strong wind from the north and it gave the advantage to White Eagles in the first half and continued for Croatia in the second. The game ended at 95:17 (they left the clock running which was was great to show the

Hamilton fans about White Eagles time wasting). There were a lot of knocks and injuries in the second half in this rough but often wide open game but referee David Barrie didn't give out many cards. Both teams were called on quite a few offsides.

I didn't know if one goal would be enough to win. White Eagles had many first half chances. At 6 minutes, Shawn Brown chipped the goalie at 15 yards from the right and defender John Hudson got back in time to head the ball over the net.

Within three minutes of the goal, SWE Sasa Viciknez was on a rush on the right and pushed the ball forward from 28 yards and SWE Kirie Dimitrov at 20 yards too a low shot up the middle that was stopped on a quick reaction save by the goalie sprawling at 10 yards.

Milos Kocic earned the shutout for the White Eagles. He had to be brilliant on a few occasions to ensure the win. He did not travel with the team last Saturday to Montreal to play the Impact Academy but instead flew with Toronto FC

to Kansas City and then down to Honduras to be a back up goalie for the MLS team. Milos Djurkovic was the White Eagles goalie last week in their 3-1 victory and only conceded a Penalty kick goal. White Eagles continue to lead the league in goals against having only allowed 7 goals in now 12 games. Tonight's defence of Milos Vucinic, Mark Jankovic, Mirko Medic and Goran Vlaski was also a big reason for the victory. They have the ability to turn the ball up the field and

become an offensive threat.

Hamilton's best chance was at 54 minutes when Preston Corporal took a 15 yard blast from the left that was blocked by the goalie and Adam Leggett followed with a 15 yard rebound from almost the same spot with the goalie pushed wide left of the post. At 68 minutes, Kocic was injured in a collision with HC John Hudson playing for a 45 yard freekick sent into the box that ended up being flagged offside. Kocic recovered to finish the game but after that all goal kicks were taken by defender Mirko Medic. Croatia had three chances in the last five minutes to tie the game but couldn't connect on passes into and through the box.

White Eagles take possession of first place with the win tonight with 27 points and have two games in hand on York Region Shooters also with 27. Hamilton Croatia had a chance to be first if they'd have won tonight but they remain at 26 points. They had climbed that high with a win on Wednesday night away against St Catharines Wolves and so would probably have been tired after playing two games in three nights.

Saturday August 7th Portugal FC 2 Montreal Impact Academy 0

Played in front of about 75 people. Academy players were outmuscled and outplayed by the older and bigger PFC players. Jarek Whiteman and Luca Forno scored in the first half both goals the result of outmuscling the MIA players.

Andrea Lombardo played most of the game for PFC. He did very little of consequence(kind of like his TFC career!). I can't say he is the laziest player I've ever seen but he is in the top 10.

Result of the Saturday August 7, 2010 CSL game between TFC Academy and Toronto Croatia played at Brockton Stadium in Toronto at 7:00pm.

23 min...Croatia Ante Zurak GOAL...TC Ivan Zgela 22 yard freekick from near left endline has Zurak in crowd of players in box knock in 6 yarder.

30 min...Croatia Tomislav Leko GOAL...TC Tihomir Maletic cornerkick from right has ball tipped through box and Leko kicks 10 yard shot from left to top right corner of net just under bar.

56 min...Nicholas Lindsay GOAL...TFCA Sergio Camargo cornerkick from left had a player send shot from 12 yards to underside of crossbar (which I thought was a goal) but ball partially cleared and Lindsay 10 yard shot from left is into net behind goalie Sandi Matika.

57 min...Croatia Tihomir Maletic GOAL...Maletic pokes ball in from 8 yards as TFCA Doneil Henry drags him down from behind (which would have been a Penalty kick) and the shot rolls behind diving goalie Garrett Cyprus to left post.

Final Score:.........TFC Academy...............1..................Toronto Croatia............3..............

Attendance was about 70 on this warm evening. A slight majority of the fans were cheering for Toronto Croatia. TFC Academy were chased from BMO Field a few weeks ago (they would play some of their games after Toronto FC games) but complaints that they were wrecking the field and the poor attendance vs security costs forced them to relocate. After the MLS game kids were invited to meet Tony The Tiger (to take penalty shots like last month?). I couldn't stick around as I had only one hour to get to this other stadium.

Any chance of an Academy comeback rally were ended when Toronto Croatia scored so soon after their lone goal. The Academy didn't play like they have earlier this year. Head coach Jason Bent said that midfielders Matt Stinson and Brennan McNicoll have left the teams to go to school on scholarships. He said today was also the last game for forward Allando Matheson who is doing the same. Doneil Henry wore the captain's armband today taking the position from Matt Stinson. The Academy will fill their roster with players from their Junior team. That team had a nice write up in the Toronto FC game program for a tournament they attended in Houston.

Hassane Rifai was the referee this game and by my count gave out five Yellow cards all in the second half (three to Croatia) in this often wide open game. Both teams had chances to score another three goals each. Rifai added five minutes

of extra time to the game some of it due to the lack of ball boys. TFCA Ashtone Morgan made a blooper by raising his arms and catching a ball near the sidelines on a cross that was well over his head. Only thing was he was still five yards inbounds. That raised howls from the Croatia fans for a card but within a minute Morgan had earned one a more conventional way for pushing over TC Halburto Harris while chasing him down the sideline.

With today's win Toronto Croatia grabs the eighth and last playoff spot. They have a good chance of holding on and even moving up in the standings because they have between two and four games on hand on most of the other teams. Serbian White Eagles were in a similar position a month ago and gradually passed all the teams ahead of them. Toronto Croatia I don't expect can do that well because they've had too many ties so far this year. The Academy remain in fifth place.

I caught the North York Astros London City game live today (I was the guy with the big hair, in the first stands if anyone else was there, me and a friend got in for 5 bucks by making dollar store orange cloths into a flag) and had a wonderful view of London surprisingly thrashing us 7-0, they were down 5-0 at half, some decent goals, a good free kick too, more then 50 people for sure showed but probably not 100.

next home game is september ?9th or 19th? against portugal fc, if you make yourself something orange you'll probably get in for 5$

Result of the Sunday August 8th, 2010 CSL game between Brampton Lions and Brantford Galaxy played at Victoria Park in Brampton at 3:00pm.

81 min...Lions Judah Hernandez GOAL...Lions Daniel Nascimento rolls pass up middle from 35 yards and Hernandez sends from 15 yards under sprawling goalie Ante Domjanovic to center of net.

Final Score:.....Brampton Lions..........1..............Brantford Galaxy.............0.................

Attendance was about 150 on this warm day that had a threat of rain before the game began, a few drops fell at 26 minutes but had stopped a few minutes later. The sun came out for the second half which turned out to be a disadvantage for the Galaxy.

Roy Blanche earned the shutout for the Lions. He had to be brilliant to make some point blank stops on Galaxy chances. It probably helps that he plays so much Futsal. Right from the 4th minute he had Nenad Begovic take a 30 yard freekick chip from the right that BG Ranko Golijanin take a midair 10 yard kick that Blanche blocked and BC Mark Reilly rolled an 8 yarder that he smothered. Blanche cleared the ball but then collapsed with an injury. One piece of luck Blanche had was at 51 minutes when Golijanin on a rush on the left took a low cross that forced Blanche to guard the left post; Reilly then had an 8 yard shot to the open net but put it over the bar. At 57 minutes BG Maralis Beckford was given a through ball on the right and his low 12 yard shot to the left side was stopped by Blanche's great foot save. At 70 minutes Begovic took a cornerkick from the right that dropped in the box and Golijanin kicked a 6 yard shot that the sliding goalie blocked and tipped the ball wide left of the post. More Lions luck on the resulting cornerkick as Bogovic from the left sent the ball into the box and BG Zachary Tait headed the ball wide right from 4 yards on the right post.

Galaxy goalie Ante Domjanovic had to make some good saves too. Best one was at 59 minutes when Lions Blazej Skoczylas had a 12 yard blast that a defender blocked and Skoczylas took the 7 yard rebound on the left had the goalie stopped on the left post. Domjanovic had some luck too when at 39 minutes Lions Daniel Nascimento rushed up the left side and sent in a low cross from 20 yards along the end line and Hernandez slid and kicked an 8 yarder over the net.

Hernandez was a offensive threat in the first half but was almost invisible in the second half until his late goal.

This is the third win a row for the Lions. There was a time after the first month of the season when the team was last in the 13 team league. Today's win moves the Lions up two spots into 9th place and only one spot out of the final playoff position. The Galaxy stay in 7th but now fall to a .500 record (5-5-3).

Manager Phil Ionadi said before the game that their goal was just to make the playoffs and then anything can happen. Armando Costa has been back in charge as their head coach for the last six or seven games replacing Goran Rapaic. In the earlier season program I have it said Costa had not left the team but was going to be in charge of youth development. Ionadi said the team was back to playing the style they used to play before the start of this year.

Joe Audi was the referee and gave out a few cards for tough checks.

Game over, now I have one hour to get to the York Region Shooters game!

Result of the Sunday August 8th, 2010 CSL game between York Region Shooters vs Milltown FC played at St Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple at 7:00pm.

63 min...Milltown Cordell Benjamin GOAL...MFC Martin Kuijpers lofts 35 yard freekick from right sideline that flies into box and Benjamin from 6 yards in crowd of players flicks header into top left corner of net.

93 min...Shooters Aundre Rollins GOAL...Shooters goalie Camilo Benzi came upfield to take freekick from 50 yards. He shoots ball down middle, the ball is knocked down and Rollins shoots 10 yarder into net into center of net beyond goalie Scott Cliff.

94 min...game ends before the restart.

Final Score:......York Region Shooters..........1..............Milltown FC.............1...............

Attendance was about 125 on this warm evening.

The last play of the game had been building for the last 30 minutes of this game. After Milltown took the lead their scoring chances ended except for trying to score on counter attacks when the Shooters pressed forward. At least twice Shooters goalie Camilo Benzi raced forward well out of his box to clear through balls into the Shooters half. At 74 minutes came upfield to take a 25 yard freekick from the left but laughably put it well over the net well worse then the Shooters outfield players were aiming. (maybe twice the distance and a kick like that might work?...hmm). At 89 minutes the Shooters forwards had about three shots within 15 seconds including a shot off the right goalpost. Jason DeThomasis had slipped when he tried to turn at 12 yards to get to a ball on this play and the player behind him blasted a shot. This action was so fast I couldn't write it down. (was this chance more practice for later in the game?...hmm). Milltown FC goalie Scott Cliff was time wasting. There is nothing wrong with waiting for a player to rush into the box to force him to pick it up and Kadian Lecky obliged time after time so Cliff could do his cartoon Lucy and Charlie Brown's football routine but

he was lucky that referee Manuel Orellano didn't give him a Yellow for wasting time taking goal kicks or passing off that responsibility to call a defender 30 yards away to take them. Some leather lunged fan kept pointing out the time wasting in Spanish to Orellano. After the tying goal Orellano chased down Rollins to give him a Yellow card for pulling off his shirt to celebrate then blew the whistle before play could be restarted. The four minutes of extra time was a fair rate I'd say because of a few injuries and no ball boys despite the whistling from the Milltown fans in the crowd.

Shooters missed a lot of scoring chances but Scott Cliff had to be brilliant at 86 minutes when Nicolas Martinez took a 25 yard shot from the left that had Cliff snag the ball on a one handed grab over his head to grab with Shooters players wairing for a tap-in that I don't think even they could have missed.

Milltown officials confirmed they'd be losing a few players as identical twins Erick and Eros Olazabal were going back to university. Interesting they were both subbed at halftime. Also Christopher Suta is leaving for the Canadian U-20 National team training camp. TFC Academy has similar problems.

Today's tie puts the Shooters up to 28 points--one point up on the Serbian White Eagles who must love this result as Milltown moved up to 26 points. The White Eagles have three games in hand on both teams.

Wednesday August 11

St. Catharines Wolves 0 : 4 Serbian White Eagles

Serbian WE dominated possession at the St. Catharines Roma Wolves' ground. Two goals from Kiril Dimitrov and one from Shawn Brown. Sasa Viciknez scored the 3rd as the Wolves keeper scuffed the goal kick into his feet, took a few touches and found the back of the empty net. The Wolves struggled against the bigger, faster and stronger Eagles and did not muster a shot on target to test Miloš Kočić.
