BC Place's Magnificent New Retractable Roof taking shape!

Have just driven 6 hours from Stade Saputo back to Toronto, I am reminded of something else, and shudder to think if it will even work.

I don't thinks it will look that bad. Here's how the it will look inside for the Cap games:

Outside view with the convention center, hotel and casino:

Of course this is what all Footy fans want:

It's my opinion that the structure looks top heavy. You can do all the engineering analysis you want, the question is how will those masts hold up in an earthquake.

All the seats are being replaced with padded seats that are slightly wider, so the overall seating capacity will be 55,000.

Mast 11 is the next one to go up with 25 still to go. Each mast is 275 feet high

Ok well when was the last time Vancouver was hit by an earthquake?

Never, lol we get tremors thats it. I have a strong assumption the theory of the Pacific Riing of Fire falls short of Vancouver, or we would of been hit by more Earthquakes over the last decade just like the rest of the areas inside the ring, though we have not had any.

that 9.0 one is never coming.

The seismic code (building code) in BC is pretty robust - given that the building would be designed to meet code requirements I'm sure the masts will wobble a lot in a high magnitude quake but will remain standing. I'd be more worried about the condos in Kits...

That said, maybe the owners could do a bit more education for the public on how it would be safe, especially considering the history. I personally would be more worried about snow load than earthquakes.

Great. Thanks. Now when it does come next week, it's your fault.

No, but seriously, the Rign of Fire is somehting I've studied throughout school, lol extensivley.

And when you breakdown the numbers it would seem that amount of Earthquakes we actually get in Vancouver compared to the amount you see along the rest of the Ring, in South America, California and in Asia. Begs the question does the ring of fire actually strecth this far up north. You figured if we were in the Red Zone like it suggest we would see a lot more small quakes run through town, like the rest of the Ring seems to get.

This is going to be great, I don't think we need to worry about it falling over (most new buildings in vancouver are built to very high seismic standards) or not working a la Olympic stadium as this is proven technology. The Olympic stadium was designed by a French architect with big dreams but no sense of engineering requirements and it was the first retractable roof in the world and therefore the technology had never been used before(and never again).

what I am disappointed about is the lack of a grass field. It's kind of sad to have such a great stadium with a turf field. of course it could never be multi purpose with grass. . .

hopefully the whitecaps can get their true soccer stadium built as fast as possible but I think we are going to have to endure five years of turf!

btw. does anyone have any info on the status of the waterfront stadium? last I heard they were in negotiations with the port authority over land but that was like two years ago, have they just abandoned it in the short term so they can focus on MLS?

Every time a new Mast tower goes up, it's like the Stadium is having an Erection.

Mast tower 21 is now going up so 15 Erections to go.

That's a pretty horny stadium
