For clarity, this link confirms that Toronto FC retain the "home grown" rights to a player when he goes off to (4-year) College:

http://www.redbullsacademy.com/academy/overview/homegrown_player_policy.aspx

Players in the New York Red Bulls Academy will be added to the MLS home grown talent identification list.

Players who are on the list will benefit from the opportunity to be signed directly by the New York Red Bulls first team, as opposed to entering the MLS Draft where they could be selected by any MLS team. Set in place by the MLS in 2006, the rule is designed to provide increased opportunities for local players. In order to be eligible players must abide by the following guidelines.

•All players must reside in a team's "Home Territory" for at least one year prior to being added to the team's Home Grown Player List.

Players must be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List prior to entering a four-year college, but can maintain their Home Grown Player status during college if registered before entering that institution.

•Members of the U17, U20, and U23 U.S. National Teams cannot be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List, but a player already on a Home Grown Player List can maintain that status if selected for a U.S. National team at a later date.

Anyone know what school Allando Matheson went to? Can not find his name at Uconn.

http://www.24thminute.com/2010/08/tfca-players-go-to-college.html

"I confirmed with Earl Cochrane the TFCA players that are headed to university this fall.

According to Cochrane all college-bound players are assessed for their ability to one day play for our first team. If it's thought that they are someone TFC needs to hang on to, they will be invited back to play for the summer months between university seasons."

The players are:

Matt Stinson – Winthrop University (D-1)

Brennan McNicoll – Rutgers University (D-1)

Allando Matheson – Jr College/Prep School in Connecticut for 6 months until he can sign for UCONN (D-1)

Garrett Cyprus – Prep School for a year before transferring to Harvard or another Ivy League School

Daniel Fabrizi – York (CIS)

Casey D’Mello – York (CIS)

Since a player going to a 4-year College retains his status as "homegrown" does the same apply to a JuCo or a Prep. School (fancy, private HS)?

To further reinforce that the OSA doesn't always make the best decisions:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/soccer/mls/torontofc/article/853125--brampton-teen-achieves-dream-with-tfc-deal

Less than two years ago, Beverly and Donald Henry sat in the family car trying to console their youngest child, Doneil, as he cried after being cut from the Ontario Soccer Association provincial program.

“If you want to play soccer, it’s up to you,” Beverly Henry told her son that day.

Doneil listened. Just days later, he had a tryout with the fledgling Toronto FC Academy. On Thursday, the 17-year-old defender from Brampton made history, becoming the first player from that youth development program to sign a professional contract with the big club.

OSA make bad decisions? never :P. Possible that he somehow wasn't good enough for the team, then somehow became the bringest star at TFCA, but...

I just think it's great that the **** system of prov teams are done when it comes to being top dog. Nobody in their right mind would turn down a free spot @ a professional academy to play for those clowns.
