CSL 2010 Week 5

Recommended Posts

Result of the Friday June 4th, 2010 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and York Region Shooters played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:00pm.

6 min...SWE Milos Scepanovic dribbles to right just inside YRS box and YRS Fitzroy Christey spins him around on shirt tug and YRS Rick Titus dives behind him at his ankles and Scepanovic falls over. Referee David Barrie calls for

a Penalty kick.

6 min...SWE Milos Scepanovic GOAL...Scepanovic blasts Penalty kick into high left side of net beyond reach of goalie Camilo Benzi who dived low.

16 min...SWE Shawn Brown GOAL...SWE Alex Braletic rolls through ball up middle from 50 yards. YRS goalie Camilo Benzi calls off defender Rick Titus and crouches to pick up ball but Brown cuts between them to poke away ball. Brown then is on a 2 on 1 and shoots 12 yarder into center of net past defender Ryan Dummett.

17 min...SWE Milos Scepanovic GOAL...SWE Adrian Tismenar kicks long pass from 65 yards to right and from 30 yards Scepanovic gets to pass and takes 20 yard shot past goalie at 15 yards into left side of net.

63 min...YRS RED card...Marcelo Capazolo earns a direct ejection for a sliding trip on a charging SWE Stefan Vukovic at 22 yards as the last man back.

Final Score:.........Serbian White Eagles..............3.................York Region Shooters...............0..............

Attendance was about 200 people on this warm evening with the threat of rain all day which resulted during the game with a few drips but after the game a big rainstorm hit. There were two CSL games further west and south of here that

were actually cut short by the storm. This game was broadcast live by Rogers Community Channel.

The White Eagles came out flying and put the game away in the first 20 minutes with three goals. Club official Dragan said the team put on all their 'fast' players at the beginning to jump start the team. The veteran/leading scorer/past captain

Sasa Viciknez wasn't brought into the game until the 67 minute mark. He is slower but a set piece specialist. I saw defender Taylor Lord make some long runs along the wing. He played with midfielder Milos Scepanovic in the Francophone Games held in Lebanon last year.

Milos Kocic earned the shutout for the White Eagles. He made his first start for the MLS Toronto FC and a shutout in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship game on Wednesday night playing against Vancouver Whitecaps. He's number three on the TFC depth chart at goaltender and needs the extra work.

There's no reason to worry that TFC Academy has locked up all the good young players. Speedy Stefan Vukovic came on at 60 minutes and had some chances and forced the YRS player to take a Red card to prevent a breakaway. Dragan said he's only 17 and from Hamilton.

Shooters had one glorious chance to get back into the game at 52 minutes when Geron Duporte took a 20 yard freekick from the sharp left side and the ball spun backwards off a defender trying to clear the ball and popped up for YRS Kadian Lecky to head the ball from 4 yards that the flying goalie Milos Kocic blocked with his hand then, when he and the ball fell to the ground, swatted the ball out for YRS Jason DeThomasis to kick a 4 yarder that hit the bar and deflected out and a defender made the clearance from the box.

Coming into the game, York Region Shooters were in first place of the 13 teams with a 3 win, 1 tie record and the Serbian White Eagles were in last but only because they had played just one game so far in the season which they'd lost. Most fans would believe that both teams will end up in the top four by the end of the season.

Result of the Saturday June 4th, 2010 CSL game between TFC Academy and Montreal Impact Academy played at BMO Field in Toronto at 7:00-pm.

55 min...MIA Kevin Luarca GOAL...MIA Kevin Cossette centers a pass from 25 yards on the right and although Luarca is falling gets 20 yard low shot past goalie Angelo Cavalluzzo into center of net.

75 min...TFCA Doneil Henry GOAL...TFCA Brennan McNicoll cornerkick from right has leaping Henry in crowd of players head ball in from 6 yards into right side of goal past goalie Dominic Provost.

Final Score:.........TFC Academy...............1...............Montreal Impact Academy..............1.............

Attendance was around 60 on this warm evening with a bit of rain falling in the second half. This game was held one hour after the MLS game between Toronto FC and Kansas City Wizards which was played before an announced crowd of 21583. No announcements about the CSL game were made during the MLS game although at least twice fans were urged to stay with their children to come onto the field and take a shot on the cereal mascot Tony The Tiger. That had about 1000 people stay behind but once the kid took a penalty kick and got their prize, the child and the parent were escorted out. Today was the best chance the TFC Academy had of getting some fans as the names were fresh from the three that got to play in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship this past Wednesday against Vancouver Whitecaps. Opportunity lost!

There were goal and substitution announcements during the entire game and the main scoreboard was running. I could hear the music pumping out of nearby Lamport Stadium where there was a pro lacrosse game going on.

TFC Academy used MLS logoed soccer balls rather than the CSL league sponsored Givova balls.

Referee Mike Lambert took himself out of the game at halftime and fourth official Manuel Orellano took over for the second half. The Impact bench kept asking him if he was hurt and that it was too bad he couldn't continue. They probably ]

liked his more favourable calls.

I confirmed with TFC Academy Junior Team Head Coach Stuart Neely that there was no risk that any Academy players called up to play in the Nutrilite game on Wednesday risked losing any kind of NCAA scholarship eligibility. That was the same answer if it had have been a regular MLS game. Maybe at the third game of a pro call up there would be possible trouble. It sure makes a change from a few years ago when playing for an amateur team in the CSL risked disqualification if they played against a CSL team that had some professional players.

It was a fair result. TFC Academy had the run of play overall in the game but the Impact got their chances. Impact almost scored again at 91 minutes when Kevin Cossette took a cornerkick from the left and the ball was knocked back to him and his low recross had an Impact player's shot blocked at 7 yards and another player boot the rebound into the left side of the net but the play was flagged offside. So much for my theory that the Impact would tire after playing a game just a night earlier in Hamilton against Hamilton Croatia and losing 2-0 in a rain shortened game. It's the second weekend in a row they've played the Friday-Saturday timetable instead of stretching their weekend until Sunday.

Was at last night's Toronto Croatia 1 Milltown FC 1 match. For any Vs who have not seen a CSL game yet and have the opportunity, please do so. Honest football with some skillful players on show. Sat with VPjr who was very hospitable inspite of one or two Toronto Croatia supporters in front of us who were a bit mouthy. Hopefully I can make it up to a game in Milton; and thanks for the scarf, Dino.

Result of the Sunday June 5, 2010 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and Milltown FC played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:15pm.

32 min...Milltown Eros Olazabal GOAL...MFC Martijn Kuijpers takes 20 yard freekick blast through player wall that's deflected by sliding goalie Sandi Matika up and off that bar. The Croatia defenders can't clear and Olazabal gets a low blast through the crowd of players from 10 yards on left to low right corner of net.

78 min...Croatia Hugo Herrera GOAL...TC Hayden Fitzwilliams crosses from left and has TC player get in a 20 yard shot that's partially blocked up middle and Herrera shoots 12 yarder into right side of net beyond goalie Scott Cliff.

Final Score:......Toronto Croatia.............1..................Milltown FC................1................

Attendance was about 125 on this mild evening that cooled rapidly after it got dark.

There could have been a lot more goals this game. At 70 minutes MFC Martijn Kuijpers's 10 yard shot from the right hit the right post and MFC Erick Olazabal's 12 yard rebound from the left had the goalie punch the bar forward and a defender cleared. At 91 minutes TC Braeden Krampert blasted a 12 yard shot down the middle and it hit the bar and TC Jonathan Bustamante followed up by shooting the rebound from 15 yards over the bar. Those were just the shots that actually hit the bar. Both teams could have down with more accurate shooting although both goalies and the surrounding defenders played well.

Referee Matt Aiduini added six minutes of injury time to the second half to make up for the injuries that Milltown were suffering. Croatia fans were whistling and booing each delay feeling Milltown were stalling for time. The topper was at 66 minutes when Jesse Mahal and Agustin DeMedina were both injured for Milltown when they crashed into each other. So many were being injured with the temperature dropping I was wondering if they were cramping up. They only made one sub during the whole game. I asked Milltown co-owner Leno Terra after the game what was going on and he admitted they had a weak bench so they just left their starters in the whole game because of the quality drop-off. Also Milltown had played on Friday night and were tired from that game whereas Croatia had a full week to prepare.

I had never seen Milltown FC play before. They filled their roster with open tryouts rather than going the route of Brantford Galaxy which was to stock their team with imports. They have only played one home game so far but after next week they will get to play six weeks of home games in a row.

I don't recognize many of their players except for Agustin DeMedina who played last year with CSL Brampton Lions and Erick and Eros Olazabal (twin brothers) who played for TFC Academy butnot come to the team as overage players with the Academy policy of shedding players at the age of 19 (although the brothers are still 18).

Robin,

at 70 minutes, the player that hit the post was #8, Range Hussein, not Martijn Kuijpers.

Also, the reason our players were going down injured several times in the 2nd half is because a) the difficult schedule we have had to endure (2 weeks in a row of 2 games in 3 days) and B) the naturally physical style of play in the CSL. This resulted in a lot of our players suffering picking up a variety of knocks throughout the game. In fact, a number of our players were questionable prior to the game due to nagging injuries (hamstrings, groins, etc...). We actually brough 20 players to the field on Sunday because we were not sure until after warmup what our 18 man roster was going to be due to these injuries. The cold weather on Sunday night made it even worse. We are very lucky to have avoided major injuries.

We are very thankful that our schedule becomes more "normal" the next few weeks. Our players need to time to heal up and focus on their next game.

As for only making 1 sub, our team was playing very well, despite the nagging injuries, they were fighting hard as a team and Coach Carbajal clearly felt that the group on the field deserved the opportunity to finish that game as intact as possible. We had 4 players on the bench that have been starters for us this year so there is no massive quality drop from the starters to the bench. Coach Carbajal simply made a decision to go to the mat with the lineup that got us a 1-0 lead over a very tough TC squad and which had been playing very well that night. That was a character building game for our team.

VPjr - I'm really enjoying watching Milltown come together. I hoping to get out the to your game versus the Astros on the 27th. Do you know if any of your upcoming games will be on TV? I don't get the games here in Pickering, but DJT caps most of them and I've been downloading them an watching them on my iPod on my way to work.

Also, to anyone in the know, any word on what happened to the new and improved CSL website? The content on the current site has improved, particularly in terms of the game reports, but the site looks a little tired.

^ Hi BurgerKing

Glad to hear you are enjoying the process. We are enjoying it too. Lots of work but its fun.

I THINK our game vs. Brampton Lions will be broadcast by Rogers.

We are recording our home games and we are working to line up a host and an editor to be able to post "Games in 5 minutes" on our website. I have no idea how to post the full game online for people to download (I'm not that tech savvy) but I'll get with L.T. and we'll figure something out.

I attended the Brantford Galaxy vs York Shooters match last night. Galaxy were playing some great football, game ended 5-2. The European players that came over played very well...you could tell this team was made up of fully professional players, unlike most(i think all) CSL teams. Again 1000+ in attendance, standing room only. The team has got to get rid of the music when the ball goes out of play and get the PA announcer to act more professional throughout the game. I enjoyed the match though, great atmosphere in the park.

man, the toronto rogers was playing baseball yesterday, really? low level baseball? I can barely sit through the pro's...anyways, the website says I missed a helluva match, North York was down 2-0 to Toronto Croatia but stormed back to tie it up.

that's honestly fantastic, hopefully they can keep up generally (like at least beating the bar they've set at important games in the next few years), if it's all standing the tickets are cheaper, no? North york games are like 15-17 bucks so if they actually sold a few hundred they'd pull in a decent amount.
