Alex D
I can't say I agree with this. It makes sense to play all WCQs in the three MLS cities, not only from a fan standpoint but also an infrastructure standpoint. This country is short on good soccer stadiums, particularly ones with grass pitches. Outside of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, the only city with a half-decent stadium for soccer is Edmonton, and even Commonwealth Stadium has field turf now. Maybe I'm approaching this issue from a different perspective, but I just don't like the idea of hosting some of our qualifiers in the tiny stadiums that we used in the past, such as Richardson Stadium or King George V Park. I wouldn't mind seeing King George V Park used for a lower profile match, just to revisit history. The upside of the location and small capacity is a very pro-Canada crowd. Moncton has a new stadium that is suitable for CMNT matches also. 10,000 seats and a grass pitch. And even though it will have turf, I'd love to see Canada play some matches at Winnipeg's new stadium (when completed). Overall I like the biologist's strategy. Serve the strongholds, then engage the rest of the nation.
paul-collins
I thought BC Place was to have field turf as well?
oreo
I think it's high time CONMEBOL gets five automatic spots. I'm all for spreading the beautiful game around the world, but going on performances from past World Cups: other than Ghana making the quarterfinals once, the round of sixteen once, and Senegal's miracle quarterfinal run of 2002, Africa's showings at the World Cup have been poor at best, and certainly do not deserve six automatic spots (although I imagine the host spot will be moved to CONMEBOL). On that note, in all fairness, I don't believe CONCACAF deserves 4 automatic spots either, because the "third" (and "fourth" in 2006) CONCACAF representative (i.e. not USA or Mexico) have a grand total of ONE win in the last three World Cups! And with only one quarterfinal appearance between USA and Mexico over the last three world cups, it's hard to justify four automatic spots. That being said, as a Canadian soccer fan, I wouldn't complain about it, cuz it would mean a better chance of qualifying! Here's how I think the 2014 spots should be allocated: Automatic AFC: 4 spots CAF: 4 spots CONCACAF: 3 spots CONMEBOL: 4 spots + Brazil OFC: 0 spots UEFA: 14 spots Playoffs: CAF-CONCACAF AFC-OFC concacaf is not a fair confederation and wants to manipulate everything , did you guys saw how kasey keller (american) choses the groups in durban south africa in 2007? how many times in the pass 10 years have mexico ,honduras ,jamaica and canada ended up in the same group at youth levels to senior ? it would be best when FIFA do the Draw this time around at a city in Brazil no one from concacaf do the draw (placing teams into groups) , and it's always possible to be done by computers . I am sick & tired of the americans dominance in Concacaf , they hosted all the Gold Cups since 1990s , most of the youth Tournaments and would like to host a World cup in 2022 , it's not fair ! I would rather qatar the little middle eastern country of 1.3 million people host it rather than the united states and yes Bill Clinton is a good man . Concacaf dont deserve 3.5 spots , 3.25 is more like it , here would be the ideal places allocation per Confederation : UEFA 13 Caf 5 Conmebol 6 ,including host and results of last world cup AFC 4.5 concacaf 3.25 OFC .25 unbias ! oreo
4th place CONCACAF would probably have a much better shot of getting to the world cup going through Oceania and Asia than going through South America even if it's an extra home and away series agree , Concacaf can hold their own versus AFC/OFC Teams but South american teams have a huge advantage because of their High Altitude stadiums in cities of Colombia , Equador , and Bolivia concacaf teams would have a hard time beating them , FIFA usually let Concacaf host the 1st leg then play away . Any result can happen in the 1st leg but playing away would be difficult , lets hope FIFA rotates the Intercontinental playoff for 2014 like what they did in '06 & '10 .
