Hainault to play left back in Houston next year? I don't understand why they just wouldn't slide him to CB as that is his natural position.

"Center back needed

"With 14 first-team players under contract, we have up to six roster spots open," Canetti said. "With five reserve players under contract, we have up to five roster spots open there. Therefore, there could be up to 11 more additions over time."

On defense, three of the four starting spots appear set with an opening at one of the center backs. Andrew Hainault is likely to move to the left spot. Bobby Boswell is the anchor in the middle. Recent signee Hunter Freeman, 25, is likely to play right back.

Veteran Eddie Robinson re-signed with the club and will likely give the Dynamo insurance off the bench. That leaves one of the center back spots open, which could be filled by Geoff Cameron if an attacking midfielder can be signed."

Great quote about Jazic from a US blog:

"Ante Jazic is one of the better left backs in the league, but that isn’t really saying much. If he was right footed he would be average at best."

Personally I think it's incredible he's still playing. I had written him of years ago (remember HIS MNT choke?) but the fact he is still sticking around says a lot about his conditioning and his wisdom, kind of a defensive version of Onstad. We sure could have used him vs Greece at times.

An interesting article on the bulls preseason, mentioning that Sutton is battling for the starting keeper spot:

The goalkeeping situation is just as foggy as the offense. Greg Sutton, who served as the backup last season, is challenging Bouna Coundoul for the starting spot. Coundoul had great numbers last season, posting a franchise-record 11 shutouts, but also had his shaky moments.

Coundoul was scheduled to play in Monday's exhibition match and then have an injection to help a barking knee that flared up last season. That shot is expected to sideline him for five days. Backe said he plans to make a decision on who the starter will be in the next week or so.

"They're almost even," Backe said.

Martin John apparently being closely watched by Colorado Rapids: http://www.coloradorapids.com/news/2011/03/rapids-use-england-ties-scout-left-back

Martin John, a 22-year-old currently with Cardiff City in the English Championship, is very much on Smith’s radar as the Rapids boss seeks to strengthen the position currently occupied by Anthony Wallace.

Wallace was competing with Danny Earls for the left back spot last season before making it his own, but he remains a work in progress. Earls was traded to Seattle the day after MLS Cup but has since been waived by the Sounders.

John is London-born but has lived in Italy and Canada and attended the University of Buffalo, where he starred for the Buffalo Bulls from 2007-08. Smith, whose father is a scout at Cardiff City, has been looking at John since last summer.

“We had just signed Anthony and we had Danny,” Smith said of last summer, when they started to look at John. “I think, in terms of additional depth, this is an individual I would hope would be able to challenge for a spot. Physically and athletically, he fits what we are after.”

The Rapids have permission from Cardiff to talk to the player, but should they reach terms with him, he would not be available until after the end of the English season in late May.

That would be good news for Canada

I have never been sold with his 1 v 1 defensive abilities as an LB and at this stage of his career you usually only lose pace/quickness, but as you noted savvy and fitness can optimize your talent. Always liked the quality of his left peg, however: sends in a good cross.
