On another thread one of the dinasaurs of ASA said that it was great we had Mike Traficante of Alberta on the CSA tech executive so he could help Alberta. Thanks Mike-yet another CSA team with no Albertans. Not saying we deserve it but apparently Mike cant even play back room inflencer well. What is he good for?

U17 friendlies:

South Africa 4 - 1 England (UK - Thursday)

South Africa 1 -1 England (UK - Tuesday)

Canada notes

(from The Canadian Press):

- Canada's 21-player roster, announced Friday, features 16 returning players from the CONCACAF soccer tournament. The two notable absences are Katherine Caverly and Sabrina Hemond who are out with injuries.

- Canada's roster includes two players -- midfielder Diamond Simpson and goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo -- from the team that lost to Germany in the quarter-finals of the 2008 U-17 World Cup in New Zealand.

- There are 14 players born in 1993, six in 1994 and one -- Ashley Lawrence -- born in 1995.

Two Vancouver Islanders on U17's

(Bryan Rosenfeld quotes from the Times Colonist):

- Ally Courtnall and Abigail Raymer are magnificent athletes. They bring a lot of pace and speed to the game along with pure athletic ability. They are also both well educated about the game and have good soccer brains.

- Ally is an attacking fullback and Abigail a forward with phenomenal pace and both will be vitally important for the pressure that puts on the opposition.

"lot of pace and speed to the game along with pure athletic ability"... says it all about his intended style of play. Lets hope it works.

I recall from the Concacaf semi-final against the USA........speed and athletic ability were the teams best attributes in full display as they assembled a 10 player in the box type of defence.

There was a lot of speculation after the Concacaf result about the CSA's reluctance to finance the team for the World Cup. From what I have seen the resources were provided. The team has conducted 4 camps between May and August. 3 of those out of country. The last one in Chile and all included friendlies of decent competition.

Does anyone feel this team has NOT received the resources from the CSA they deserve to prepare for the WC? If so, what additional resources should they have been entitled too?

That depends on your expectations and assessment of the significance of youth programs and World Cups.

1) U17 CONCACAF Qualification preparatory year

- OCT (Montreal) - 9

- Jan (Toronto) - 9

- Mar (USA/T&T) - 14

32 days and they played their first international a week before the CONCACAFs.

2) Senior Women CONCACAF Qualification preparatory year

If the information on the Washington State website is accurate, the senior women's preparatory year for qualification is:

CAMPS

Nov (USA) - 11

Feb (Italy/Cyprus) - 18

Apr (China) - 7

May (USA/Norway) - 17

FALL (Various) - 84

137 days with 12 international games

3) U17 Post-Qualification World Cup preparation

- Jun (USA) - 10

- Jul (Toronto) - 10

- Aug (Chile) - 10

- Aug (USA) - 7

37 days with 4 international games

4) Senior Women Post-Qualification World Cup preparation

Applying the math above you would expect that the senior women will be camped out for a considerable period of time in the upcoming year, and there will be an unusually large number of matches.

I think they got decent preparation time. The question is was this used productively....

A quick review of the FIFA report on the 2008 U17 WC put forth the following:

- Group A (Canada's Group) scored the fewest goals of all the groups

- Canada scored 2 in their group stage and 1 in the QF for a total of 3 goals for the tournament.

- In the QF matches Canada and Korea DPR were handlily defeated by Germany and Denmark.

- In general "heading" of the ball was not used effectively offensively and misjudged often defensively.

- medium passing and long distance passing from the MF core needs work.

- creating linkage between the lines needs improving.

- strikers proved to be the most skillful showing dribbling skills and finishing skills - game changers.

- defendor corp showed good technique and ability to read the games.

These are the areas of the game FIFA has offfered up as places for improvement.

Korea DPR won the tournament...

Canada also let in just 1 goal in group, and their shots both at net and on net for the tournament were even with their opponents. In their QF loss they took 3 on Germany's net while giving up just 5. They were deserved quarter-finalists.

In 13 Canadian attempts they are the only team in the past six years to reach a World Cup Quarter-Final, and only the fourth Canadian team of either gender to ever accomplish it (U19W in 2002, Sr Women in 2003, U20W in 2004).

I stand corrected. Korea DPR won the tournament. It was Denmark that fell 4:0 to Korea in the QF. Not the other way around.

If anybody is interested the FIFA Technical Report & Statistics document from the 2008 inaugural event can be found here:

The U17's inital prep was quite low on the resource scale. Their summer has been better, you can't get much more than 37 days out of high school kids. If you camp them out all summer they get goofy. It would have been nice to have some home internationals to get them used to the crowd and feel proud and realize there is a country behind them. That would go a long way in their hearts in the World Cup. And beyond that it seems the least we can do for their commitment. That goes for the U20's too.

- the last 24 senior women's games have been away

- the last senior women's home game was 15 months ago

- the last 30 of our U20 games have been away

- the last U20 home game was 31 months ago

- our U20's have not played a home game outside B.C. in over 6 years

- the U17s have never played a home game

We finally have a couple of senior women's games a month away and the CSA has not even mentioned it.

Predictions

We get our first predictions from sportschatplace.com

Group A: Korea DPR and Nigeria

Group B: Germany and Mexico

Group C: Japan and Venezuela

Group D: Canada and Brazil

Interesting picks. I think Spain will not only go through but win their group, and I can't see Mexico getting past South Korea. I'd love to see Chile knock off North Korea for the ref, but I can't see them handle Nigeria. Not until there is age testing.

Our group is wide open. Again it's CONCACAF #1, CONMEBOL #1, CAF #1 or #2 (they never played the final) and UEFA #2. Every team made it to their confederation final, and every team is more than capable of progressing again. Every single goal in this group will likely be be critical.

Group C are the crossover quarter-final opponents for Canada's Group D, which would have Spain and Japan as the odds-on favourites.

Friendly results

T&T 1 - 0 Venezuela

FIFA.com

A couple of FIFA build-up articles in the past couple of weeks:

Friendly fire spurs Pellerud's T&T

Choi eyeing another miracle for Taeguk Girls

"There are only about 1,400 female players registered at all age levels in [south] Korea..."

Zseremeta: Venezuela are no pushovers

Petermann: We can't wait

Kiwis seek to maintain momentum

"Two 15 year olds – defender Megan Lee and goalkeeper Lily Alfeld – are in the 21-strong squad, while there is even a 14-year-old in midfielder Hannah Carlson."

New Zealand

The Young Football Ferns play two friendlies against fellow World Cup finalists en route to the Caribbean facing Korea Republic and Republic of Ireland in Miami on August 28 and 31 respectively.

Having read the Fifa article on South Korea, their coach seems pretty confident! Could be an upset there. And he claims he had only approx. 500 high school players to choose from !

Canada is in a tight group for sure.. they will ned to score goals (more than 1 per game!). Hopefully BR spent time on attacking patterns vs, defending Italian style with 9 behind the ball at all times

I think those predictions underestimata UEFA representatives. I agree with you Vic that Spain should go through.

The Canada - Ireland game should be the best game of first round for those who like defensive soccer played with intensity. The winner should make it to the second round altough a scoreless game is more likely in my mind. Those two teams might have to fight for a second round place until the very last minute of play since a goal for or against might make the difference between elimination or going further. Ireland might have a slight advantage in goals for and against since they appear to me as being a little better offensively than we are with equally efficient defenses. But in my mind, it is a 50/50 since a lucky goal either for or against might make the difference at the end.

WARM-UP's

- from lensois on BS: Ireland lose to T&T 3-0 and South Korea beat New Zealand 1-0 tonight in Fort Lauderdale.

- from Shaun Fuentes (TTFF): T&T got three clinically taken goals from forwards Brianna Ryce, Diarra Simmons and Camille Charles for the much deserved win. The Irish tried all they could to break down a stubborn T&T defence and had two chances at goal to get back into the match but were denied by a solid Linfah Jones in goal for T&T... “Playing all their regular starters did not help them much. Our girls put on some relentless pressure on the Irish passing game and organized some attacks that always seemed to cause a lot of damage in their defensive end,” the Norwegian [Pellerud] continued.

OTHER NEWS

- Hyundai delivers 55 vehicles (including SUV's and mini-buses) to the T&T Local Organizing Committee

- the pitches at the five local stadia which will host the 2010 FIFA Under-17 World Cup have been given only a Grade C rating by FIFA pitch consultant John Lockyer.

- major remedial work will have to be done to dressing rooms and international media facilities, while the Ministry of Health require certain stipulations concerning medical infrastructure, and have also demanded the upgrade of food serving areas because of poor maintenance over the years.

- Chile arrives in T&T Wednesday. Striker Yanara Aedo and teammate Francisca Moroso are listed as the key figures in the Chilean team.
