Toronto’s Pre-Season Questions

With pre-season under way for Toronto FC, all the “next year” talk from the end of 2009 has finally arrived. What does TFC have to do in order to have a successful season? A season where success should not be measured simply by making the playoffs, but contending for the MLS Cup and putting out a team that plays an attractive brand of football. There are many questions leading into the 2010 season that will play a factor in how Toronto fares on the field and in the standings.

Even after signing JDG? I think people should consider the extent to which John Carver had an input into who did and didn't get signed over the last two preseasons and the level of influence he had on who left (Jeff Cunningham for example). It wasn't all down to Mo Johnston. Having said that the Garcia/Gerba deal with San Jose (which clearly was primarily down to Mo rather than Chris Cummins) and resigning Carl Robinson on a two year deal in the aftermath of the 2008 season may be what comes back to haunt Mo Johnston this year. If all three of those players have bad seasons while collecting about a third of the salary cap between them and can't be shifted in the summer window due to guaranteed contracts and that is seen as the major contributing factor to missing the playoffs it's a no brainer that he won't be back in 2011.

Yes, I'd agree that Mo's wagon of fate is hitched to those horses, for better or for worse.

If they continue the clearly upward curve they make the playoffs, for sure. Which is a reasonable goal.

I think better coaching will help, as TFC lost dumb points late in matches, or lacked motivation in critical moments. They need a better coach because I think the talent is there, and maybe even the team cohesion is pretty good. Time to rise up to the level of the fans.

I realize it'd be their first cup appearance, but I'd say with the quality of players they have and an experienced coach they must reach the semi-final this year. Just being there is the wrong mentality.

Of course the team's mindset should always be for the Cup, but a fan can step back and take an objective look at the season. I truly think even a berth in the playoffs will be a success for Preki. It will allow him to put any doubters in his system in their places and allow him a second year to fully put his stamp on this team. I do think TFC is close, but more than a season away from being a true Cup contender. They need a stable coach and squad tuned to his liking and, I'm not convinced he can get that together quick enough to push for the Cup. A berth into the playoffs is the goal because after that anything can happen, but TFC would definitely be a dark horse.

I would not call Preki an experienced coach since he has only had 3 years experience as a head coach plus one as an assistant. That is not an experienced coach by any standard other than that of TFC who amazingly have never hired a coach who had even one full year as a head coach before getting the TFC job. Preki had a decent but not outstanding 3 years with Chivas and never got beyond the quarter-final with them. I have seen many coaches have a good run with one team before doing poorly with their next. We will see next year but a lot of TFC fans seem to be talking as if they hired an experienced coach who has succeeded everywhere he has been. He may live up to expectations but I think he is still pretty unproven.

Preki can only have TFC win, if he can develop a tactical formation which will maximize his player talent and eliminate errors by the lessor lights of his talent pool.

Thank will take intellectual work, that has been beyond Mo and his Cohorts from Britian... won hopes Preki is a true student of the game for the TFC fans, otherwise it will be long year after losing the V Cup.

For me it's miss the playoffs. Sorry boys but after last years result from the Leafs, Raptors, Argos. Blue Jays, and TFC, combined with the Als and the Impact's Championships. I hope the Toronto teams can do it again this year.

By the way I don't like the Habs; Suffered too much in the 60's as a Red Wing Fan.
