Another away friendly in the plans for May...

My bet, looking at the map and the stadiums, would be for Concepción for the 26th and ANTOFAGASTA (about 15 hours by bus from Santiago) for the 30th.

We visited Chile in the spring of 2008 and met up with my high school buddy in Antofagasta. He's a geophysical engineer in the mining industry and has lived there for the past 20 years. The copper industry has fueled the growth of this city (lots of newer buildings). Even though it's on the coast it's not a very attractive place (dry!!! moonscape-esque) but they do have a decent sized stadium (20 000+), so if Canada does play there it will bring back some good memories for us.

Had great ceviche there, too!

It doesn't matter who we play. Any South American team will be a good game and tremendous experience for the new generation.

Peru would be cool, from a personal perspective. It would be a close game. Actually, Canada is just as good if not better at every position, EXCEPT forward, where Peru's 3 bundesliga strikers might destroy our defence. But who knows.

Honestly, I am uncomfortable with the CSA actually doing a good job. It is unsettling and just plain weird. Bashing the CSA has become a part of me, and I'm not sure how to deal with this change.

Yeah, Brazil and Argentina better watch out as the rest of South America is definately catching up.

I realize you're probably talking about recent history, but in the big picture of SA fubtol history it's actually Argentina who are the ones who have done the catching up (and overtaking) of their SA rivals...

Yeah, I was talking about recently. I know the old history as well. I know that way back in the day Argentina wasn't as good as some of the other countries in South America.

News yesterday from Chile about a Chile friendly with Israel. It says that they will play on the 30th of May (Sunday) at a stadium to be named later, but then the article goes on to say that it is on the 30th or" possibly" the 4th of June (?!?). Israel plays Uruguay on the 26th of May (Wednesday) and Argentina on the 29th of May, Saturday (according to the FIFA site), so playing the day after in Chile sounds strange. Looks like it is still in flux, and Sunday May 30 in Northern Chile for Canada still looks like a fair bet.

http://noticias.123.cl/entel123/html/Deportes_Portada/Deportes/Futbol/397704.html

No source is given for this short article, so it can be doubted. Nothing on the Chile federation site about anything.

A similiar article from yesterday says the same thing, but adds that although the Israel_Uruguay match for the 26th is confirmed, a "possible" Argentina-Israel date in the same tour has yet to be confirmed by the Argentine or Israeli federations according to

http://www.seleccionchilena.com/noticias.item.350/israel-sera-examinador-de-chile-y-uruguay-antes-de-sudafrica-2010.html

Looks like everything is in a state of flux, par for the course in South Am.

edit: To confuse matters even further, the Israeli Federation website only lists a friendly in Chile onn the 26th (no mention of Uruguay or Argentina)!

http://eng.football.org.il/NationalTeam/Pages/NationalTeamAdultDetails.aspx

However, the Uruguay federation has a news item yesterday specifically saying:

"URUGUAY VS.

http://www.auf.org.uy/otras_180210.html

...so that and the lists on the FIFA site makes me think the Israel site is wrong.

Nothing at all about May or June friendlies on the Argentina federations site (and only the midMay friendly in Mexico mentioned on the Chile site). It could be that Argentina is still fishing for more prestigious opponents. It could be that the Presidents of Chile and Argentina (the countries, not the federation) are pushing for a May 25 match to jointly celebrate their Bicentennials and their countries collaboration on the joint Army of the Andes during their liberation. That may leave Canada in the lurch, maybe to be offered alternative dates in Chile and Argentina.

Update:

Note that Brazil has no friendlies before WC set yet. Best bet?

Chile does not have a friendly scheduled for late May or June yet, according to FIFA site. The Association has said that the Israel match at home will proceed May 30 or June 4.

Uruguay only has Israel on May 26 in Montevideo set so far.

Paraguay has an away match against Ireland on May 25 and a match at home against Ivory Coast on May 28, so unlikely.

Niether Perú nor Bolivia have anything set.

Anybody heard anything?

Brazil looks unlikely to me, because the Brazilian Associatiion announced today that the team will assemble in Curitiba on May 21, and then leaves for South Africa on Wednesday, May 26.

Hopes starting to fade for another friendly in May/EarlyJune in southern cone (the 5 WC bound teams from South America). This word from Uruguay FA (through a newspaper article) that Chile and Uruguay will have a friendly after Uruguay plays Israel on the 26th of May, maybe the following weekend, before Chile plays Israel at any time between the end of May to June 7. The FAs of Chile and Uruguay are now "coordinating dates".

Canada may opt to only play Argentinat for a match in northern South America or the Carribean basin instead, or may decide just to play Argentina on May 24 and head home.m

One earlier article talks about an Uruguayan öffer" of two firendlies being played between Chile and Uruguay, one in each country. At least an option to see more footie on a road trip.

Further, Chile has confirmed a friendly in South Africa against New Zealand on June 9, which means that any match against Israel may be moved up from June 7 to an earlier date, possibly squeezing out an opprotuinity to play Canada:
