Another away friendly in the plans for May...

Although I can't give away too many details, because it was told to me in relative confidence:

According to one of our UK based players...the CSA is very close to securing another friendly with a strong South American side for the team's already publicized trip to Argentina in May.

Kudos to the CSA for at least pursuing these types of opportunities, and I hope that more definite announcements will follow this lead...

Is that a guess, or do you have something to go on?

Sorry, that's just a guess.

BTW, while I'm really happy to see us lining up friendlies like that I'm a bit concern with the kind of opposition we will be facing. Argentina and a "strong SA side" 2 weeks prior to the start of the WC, away, isn't really looking good for us. Anyways, I'm not really complaining because I'm quite happy we'll be playing games.

With the V's Cup and probably 2 MNT friendlies, it will be a hectic month of May for Canadian soccer....and Loyola is spending the whole month of may In Europe.....I'm sad I'll probably miss everything :(

I did write to el presidente of the Chilean federation when the game with Argentina came up suggesting Canada could jump over the Andes and play Chile while down there. He replied saying that they would study the possibility. I wonder if things have progressed? Chile has announced some games in southern Chile late in May but had no confirmed opponents!

MB, it is great to hear that you have received confirmation of this info. I had heard the same thing a week or so ago and posted it in the Argentina thread (http://www.cansoc.org/forum/showthread.php?38861-Argentina-Canada-May-25) but I still have not been able to find out who that opponent is.

For some reason, i can't believe it is Brazil (although that would be cool). My bet is Chile as well (I really like the way that team plays under Bielsa)

How attractive is this friendly schedule looking?!

Argentina, Chile?, Ukraine

Wow thats more like it!

Great to see the games scheduled, but man, we better get our sh!t together...

We have lost our last 3 friendlies against Macedonia, Poland, and Jamaica without scoring a goal.

Now we (potentially) have Argentina, Chile, and Ukraine - all away.

Hopefully we didn't bite off more than we can chew. Like I said, having the schedule filled up is awesome, I'm just afraid it might go smomething like 5-0, 4-0, 3-1....

Or, maybe that doesn't matter. Either way we need our strongest squad for these games.... Hello JDG2, Hoilett, Fernandes?.... lol

When is the last time you saw Canada get beat that bad? I don't see us losing that badly

The Macedonia friendly aside the last time Canada was really beat badly was probably Portugal 4-1 right? Im not counting Jamaica away 3-0 for obvious reasons...

We've held our own versus teams like Spain, Brazil, Mexico, US im confident we can compete with Argentina, Ukraine and Chile. I'd bet we even get at least one result out of those matches. Canada on their game is a good team right up there in the confederation and im confident Hart is the man to bring us to where we belong

Also the team has a great chance to get exposure with these Argentina and Chile matches.... not only through television but throughout the whole World Cup Im sure Dobson and Forrest will be all over plugging the mens team when talking about Argentina and Chile "last month when Canada faced Chile we saw the Chileans struggle to contain Canada's midfield, will that be a factor here?" ;)

You might have to ask for a commission on this one.

The level of activity we`re seeing lately is unprecedented. Hopefully the CSA can use it not just to get our guys games, but parlay it into marketing opportunities and increase our profile.

I bet Soccer Canada is increasing their marketing activity. As the game gets more popular, and the level of pro teams in MLS and NASL increase, the sponsorship money they receive will only grow.

On a side note, isn't MLSE helping the CSA with their marketing?

I don't think the results matter too much here, good performance is our basic expectation and if they do that than hopefully they'll make my hopeful goal, 1 result, all three games, if we got a tie and played well (even if we wen't down 5 goals, hard for both to happen though, good play in a 5-0 loss) then I'll be happy, realistically though, I don't think we should expect Chile (if that's happening) to own us, last time I checked they were doing well in qualifiers (but that was months ago) and I would consider them a better team (and their home too) but this exactly the type of team we have to get results from to take the next step (becoming a top 50 or 60 team consistently).

I also don't expect Argentina to even remotely hammer us considering their poor form of late. Watching their second last qualifier against peru, they were getting out played a lot during the second half.

*Waits for the douche-bag brigade to come and start lecturing on how Peru is miles a head of us in soccer tradition and has a full professional structure to develop players and how we can't even shit in the same toilet as them*

Could be Chile, could also be Uruguay. Montevideo is right across from Buenos Aires.

I was thinking that too, and even *fingers crossed* paraguay is at least as close as chile. and Macksam, I don't think your too far off, I didn't see much at all of the south american qualifiers but peru, bolivia and venezuela ( colombia might be over rated too, maybe not though, there are ALOT of good columbian footballers) are teams that if we had it together we should be competitive against, of course they;d argue if they had it together too they'd leave us in their dust but...

Not that I always buy into such things, but Paraguay is in a group with New Zealand and may see us as a comparable team stylewise, etc.

Chile and Uruguay each have CONCACAF opponents in the world cup in Honduras and Mexico respectively.

Of course any or all of them would fit the bill because we're simply in the neighbourhood and fairly inexpensive in terms of any type of appearance fee, etc.

I too appreciate the higher level of opponents. I see it as a way to impress players (maybe even the JD2s and Hoillets of the world) that we will play quality opponents as a means to getting better.

A news story out of Santiago in latino papers from January 26 about Chile friendlies. Friendlies against Costa Rica and North Korea for March in Chile (BOTH in Santiago), against a Mexican local team in Azteca for May 16, and two firendlies being planned for late May, 26th in the "south" (opponent "not set") and the 30th (opponent "anonymous") in the "north" of Chile. 26th impossible for us if the BA match for the 25th goes on, so most likely in the "north' (anywhere from Santiago to Arica) on Sunday the 30th . I suspect that it will not be in Santiago from the reference, and the fact that so many others set in Santiago.

There is also mention of a final friendly on June 4 in Santiago, the Friday 9 days after the 25th of May, the opponent "not yet confirmed". Seems a bit too long for Canada to hang around for.

I suspect Israel may be one of the opponents for Chile, either the the 26th of May or the 4th of June, as they play Argentina in BA on the 29th of May.

My bet, looking at the map and the stadiums, would be for Concepción for the 26th and ANTOFAGASTA (about 15 hours by bus from Santiago) for the 30th.

Just fantasizing, but wouldn't it be great if Canada could be worked into a mini-tournament with 4 teams? Of course, ifthat happens, the whole schedule for late May may be scrapped and redone.

I rhink loyola is right about Chile being our second oponent, between Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile, Chile is the country who can afford to host a friendly in its soil. In fact, Paraguay and Uruguay didn't play any friendlies at home since a long but a long time while Chile played already 3 friendlies in their territory right after the end of the WCQ, and I don't remember when exactly but they also played another friendly against Paraguay again in Chile during the WCQ tournament

I agree that those teams are pretty good as well. I don't think Peru is bad by any means. They would do well in Concacaf.

I'd love to see us play Chile. It will be interesting to see the Honduras-Chile game at the World Cup because from what I've seen of Chile they play a very similar style to many CONCACAF teams. Fast wing play, a little shaky at the back, can be hit on the counter etc.
