TFC and the MLS Draft

MM2

Recommended Posts

The 2010 MLS draft just got a lot deeper with the recent Generation Adidas signings. http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/12/mwanga-and-tchani-among-five-more-generation-adidas-signings.html

Without a first round pick TFC will miss out on all this talent unless they can trade up. Dallas would seem to be the best target, they have two high first-round picks and already have more GA players on their roster then any other team.

Does TFC have anything they could bundle off to Dallas for one of their picks? Wynne? Barrett? Frei?

A review of last year's draft, I don't think that any other draft had so many players getting major minutes in their first season. Generation Adidas in bold.

2. TFC: Sam Cronin M (2,363-1-4)

3. LAG: Omar Gonzalez D (2,672-1-1)

4. TFC: O'Brian White F (440-2-0)

5. Dallas: Peri Marosevic F (47-0-0)

6. DC: Rodney Wallace M (2,265-3-3)

7. DC: Chris Pontius M/F (2,113-4-3)

8. Kansas: Matt Besler D (2,236-0-0)

9. Chivas: Michael Lahoud M (872-1-1)

10. NE: Kevin Alston D (2,339-0-1)

11. NYRB: Jeremy Hall M (2,001-0-1)

12. Real: Jean Alexandre M (99-0-0)

Philly just acquired the 7th overall pick from DC Utd. (along with Fred) in a swap that sent Troy Perkins the other way.

http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=305995

"United sent midfielder Fred, the No. 7 overall pick in this year's draft and allocation money to Philadelphia on Wednesday in order to trade places with the Union in the MLS allocation order. That allowed United to acquire Perkins, who is returning to the league after playing two years with a Norwegian club."

Would Bunbury still be available at #7? If so, would Philly be willing to deal?

^ Ives is reporting that Philly just acqquired the 6th pick from Dallas as well (for a full allocation).

They now have 3 picks in the top 7. For their sake, I hope all 3 players they select are capable of stepping in and contributing at this level right away.

^ Philadelphia is the anti-San Jose. (who traded away most of their top picks.)

With the talent available and the success of last years crop, a good way to build their team.

Ives also reporting that TFC made a deal last night, no details.

^ yes, clearly what you are saying is true (that Philly believes far more in building through the draft than Yallop does).

The question is whether this crop of players is that good. My guess is that they'll be ok with 3 picks in the top 7. If it was 3 picks in the top 20, I'd be less optimistic about this strategy.

Ives just confirmed that NYRB has traded two later round picks for Chris Albright from NE Revs.

I see Philly picked up McInerny. I think he was the star player on the US U17 team last year and scored some impressive goals against us. Could be a franchise player for them, assuming he's not got Europe set in his sights.

A national team coach who has seen McInerny play told me that he is the most talented player in the draft.

Gutsy move by Philly but could be brilliant

Pretty funny, from Soccer by Ives:

5:46pm- Alecko Eskandarian's Twitter: "Breaking news! I haven't been traded today!" Not yet, anyways. Who knows what Arena has up his sleeves.

From Gerry Dobson's draft day blog:

2:53 p.m. ET:

Just chatted with Teal Bunbury and his father Alex. Teal is a chip off the old block. Full of confidence but not arrogant. Well spoken and very friendly. Here's something you want to hear: He says he'd love to play in the country where he was born. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario. Great news. TFC wanted him , but just couldn't swing a deal to make it happen.

Breaking news, Dobson doesn't realize that's old news.
