Josh Simpson to Fenerbahce?

As posted over at USector ...

Not too many people know much about Josh but he's a great player. He had some injury problems over the past couple of seasons but he's healthy now. He's had a good first half-season in Turkey after transferring from the German 2nd division.

He'd be taking over Roberto Carlos' old spot if this goes through.

This guy has mad pace. It's too bad he didn't get to run a few more defenders during the gold cup to show us what he's got on the ball. But he did serve in quite a few good crosses and was one of our better players

edit: i just saw the canucks abroad thread. mods you can do with this as you please.

They called Josh a "goal scorer" - wikipedia up to date? states he has 3 goals in 11 games for Manisaspor.

No wikipedia is not upto date. He is not really a goal scorer but he is the highest goal scorer on the team. He has goals in cup games as well and many of his goals were against the bigger clubs. I would say he has set up more goals than he has scored but they don't seem to register in the assist data. (not sure how all that works)

I had suggested him as an interview candidate on another thread. I'd really like to know more about his time in Turkey both off the pitch and on. I remember interviews of former Reds Graeme Souness and Barry Venison about their playing days in Turkey and it was quite a unique playing environment, to say the least. Is Josh slated for any interviews while he's here?

No interviews planned while he is here. I think there is only one reporter that has any idea about pro soccer. Most of the questions from the media in the Victoria area go something like this... "What do you do for a living when you are not playing soccer? You must be doing something else that pays pretty good to be able to afford to travel to those different places to play?" He doesn't seem to mind the questions. He says it is an education process and it is something that he wishs he had more time to do.

^ LOL. Almost too hard to believe, except that we pretty much know it's true.

Had the wee interview with The Dobson on today. To say Josh considered the Turkish fans took "support" to another level (and this after coming from Germany to-boot) would be understating things.

Wow. A move to Fenerbahce, even being mentioned as a possibility is news indeed. No insult intended to anyone but I can't think of a player since Stalteri who could be considered as having played at one of Europe's A Class clubs.

Jeez, who was doing the interview? Dave Shutton from Springfield Shopper on The Simpsons ("Who are you, where are you going?")?

Seriously though, it's great news about the Fenerbahce interest. Way to go, Josh!

Newcastle and Tottenham are both huge clubs. Despite Newcastle's past couple seasons.

No offence, but unless he can reasonably be expected to start week-in week-out, I'd rather have him at a club like Manisaspor than a giant where he might join the (disturbingly long) list of top Canucks seeing mostly pine this season. Also (like Edgar), he's past the stage developmentally where, in the case of him not getting regular starts, at least he would benefit from just training with a higher calibre squad. Stay where you can play, I'd say. If he keeps this pace up for a full season or two then it will be a more obvious decision, but I doubt his current club would wait that long to cash in if surrounded by suitors.

But can't fault the kid for trying. Glad to see him making he dream comes true - I always liked Simpson.

How very Canadians. Don't try and reach too far in case you fail.

Having all those guys playing in the second tiers has so helped us up to now, hasn’t it....

i agree...im tired of this mentality that somehow you have to work your way up some imaginary ladder like you are playing community club soccer.

the lower leagues are filled with guys who could make it in the top tiers if they were given the chance....getting the break is almost as important as having the talent.

look at begovic....he was in the same position that lars was years ago, as a prem back-up for a regular keeper...lars never got his chance and has floated around ever since...begovic has gotten his luck and has done a lot to prove himself a premiership keeper....if he was starting for a championship side so he could get minutes he may have never gotten the chance.

its the same for jackson....get as high as you can as soon as you can and try to work your way on to the team...its a shorter route than playing in a low league hoping to attract the attention of a top league scout....being in the mind of a top manager every day gives you the opportunity to impress.

atiba is another example....he is highly rated in denmark but has never gotten the opportunity to go higher...it isnt like you reach a certain point and automatically get promoted....a good break is just as crucial.

how many americans have gone from MLS to a top league or team in europe because of the exposure they get being american?....they use that fortune to skip climbing the ladder....why cant our boys hope for the same.

i dunno...tell that to the many MNT regulars who can't get a kick at regular first team football at the moment - should it be about money and stats and the benefits of being on the books at the highest club possible, or actually playing bloody football week-in week-out

nothing canadian about that - just common sense, if you ask me

From the concacaf region, only Marquez at Barcelona, Onyewu at ACM and Suazo at Inter (even though he rarely plays) would be at larger clubs. Just browsing through Fenerbache's wiki page shows they have a brazilian wing back who had 9 caps for Brazil in 2009. This would be a huge move if it happens.

The brazilian left back you are refering to is andre santos. If you watched brazil in the confenderation cup you will remember him. He had a great tournament and I was surprised to find out he was not in europe. He was in brazil at that point and was favoured to marcelo of real madrid. I knew he would land in europe after that tournment but i never followed up on him after the summer. Would be great for josh to be a teammate with a guy of his calibar.

It is up to josh to make an impression if he goes to fenerbahce. I am not afraid that he would get frozen out of the line up, especially the way he has been playing in turkey this season. It's not like he is out of his depth he is a good player.

Very quick Obinna: today's Marca reports Andre Santos is one of the two backs Real Madrid is looking at to replace Pepe, injured until the end of the season. Since they now play Marcelo in the midfield, and think Ramos can play in the centre, they are looking at left backs even though Pepe was not one. Or they go for a centre back, like David Luiz at Benfica.

Another thing that is important: Spanish tax law changes as of Jan 1 and all players making more than 600 thousand euros will pay a lot more, meaning if they sign and seal before then they will save money. So the Turkish club, if they do sell and Madrid buys, will need their replacement fast. Simpson to Fenerbahce before the new year?

its not about money...its about reaching as high as you can in your career...its about the long term goal, not the immediate circumstance...that seems to be common sense....

its easy to point at guys like edgar and say look how he is stuck not playing so he would be better off plodding away in league 1....edgar was one of the few who did go to the top and play for the reserves and ride the bench instead of climbing the ranks...and he now has 30 appearances in the top football league on earth...and he is one break away from playing there again.....he will get his chance...if he was playing for DC united the chances of him being scouted by a prem team are almost nil...is edgar any better than hainault or jackovich?....neither will ever come close to lacing it up in the prem....the very fact that edgar was signed by a prem club when newcastle went down proves that he is in the eye of managers in that league...that is not an easy thing to get when in a lower league....there are a lot of good players in lower leagues that never get that break.

im not saying that you cant climb the ladder in a progression, but i dont think it is the only way to make it....yes, it is tough to sit the bench, but if a player is lucky enough to get that break he should take it because all the talent in the world doesnt guarantee that you will ever get it again.

Sticking with transfer rumors from Turkey, the Hutchinson to Trabzonspor rumor has resurfaced.

http://www.sabah.com.tr/Spor/2009/12/28/hutchinson_aski

Trabzonspor isn't a better club than Copenhagen but playing in a better league every week could be good for him.

And if the same website is to be believed, Josh might soon be at Fenerbahce if Manisaspor gets cash and a player in return.

But Edgar still isn't a Canada player...

Whether he is on the books of a prem team or not

Would REALLY pefer Hutchinson to move to Blackburn instead. They are also watching Stuart Holden though so that may not happen....
