Oldschool Jerseys as a Fashion Statement?

So I was at Winston's Pub last night having a few pre-show drinks with some friends (hell of a punk show last night, check out The Later Day Saints www.myspace.com/thelaterdaysaints). This guy walks by us, and I had to do a double-take after I saw the jersey he was wearing. It was our National Team shirt from the 90s I believe, with only the top half of the CSA's logo diagonally along the bottom sorta quarter of the shirt with the oldschool font for the Canada text. It had a black maple leaf on the top back if I remember correctly.

Anyway, he was wearing it just to wear it, sort of in an indie rock kinda way. I told him about us and showed him my scarf (part of the usual recruitment process) but he didn't seem too interested (damn!) so I left him be with his friends. So have classic Canada soccer jerseys fallen into the category of "something obscure that indie kids wear in an indie sort of way" now?

Damn I can't seem to find a pic of the exact jersey, plus this thread is making me look like an ubern00b (c'mon now, I'm only 24!) so someone with more time on their hands track down a pic. The shirt looked very new, and unless the CSA's decided to put out a retro line without telling anyone, is it even possible to get one's hands on a mint pre-2000s Canada jersey? That's what floored me, is that the jersey looked brand new, and his buddies thought it was awesome.

I did a quick check of ebay and saw a very large "Canada" shirt being sold by a Ontario-based ebay store called vintage retro wear. It claims to be an original national team shirt of some type, but it doesn't look right to me.

Although perhaps a little less cool, I think that newly made retro/replica shirts are an acceptable alternative to authentic original gear. You have to check out Toffs.com - it is so much fun to look through. They have some Canadian clubs, such as the Blizzard (70's home and away), Whitecaps (79 champs and 80's), Manic, and Falcons. They also have 70's Canada.

Strangely, uksoccershop.com seems to sell Toffs gear for a couple of pounds less than the Toffs website. They also list a 60's Canada from Toffs, which the Toffs site doesn't have. There are also a couple of sites (sportingkicks.co.uk and mkn.co.uk), that have a 60% off sale on their available Toffs shirts which includes the 60's Canada shirt in XL. This is only fifteen pounds (14.99), instead of thirty-three (uksoccershop) or thirty-five (Toffs) pounds. I suspect that the 60's shirt is no longer being made and so is being sold off, but the 70's shirt (bigger collar) is still being made.

It would be cool if a supporters' group were to buy retro shirts and then go to a game together in large numbers. Voyageurs doing that for a Canada game could be fun. I'm doubt that many of the average TFC or Impact fans would recognize Blizzard or Manic shirts, but the supporters groups should think about this - especially for V Cup games. Whitecaps supporters should definitely consider buying NASL replicas for when the Caps move back to BC Place.

I came across a kid wearing a New York Cosmos jersey in Amsterdam.

He didn't know what it was, or who Pele was.

Then proceeded to tell me I was idiot who couldn't know anything about soccer cause I was Canadian.

Go figure.

I was in Edinburgh early last year and on my way down to London, I stopped into TOFFS and picked up one of the old Blizzard white jerseys, (fond season ticket memroies of days gone by with my old man at Varsity/CNE stadiums). I wore i to a TFC game late in the year and I was actually shocked how many folks knew who the Blizzard were.

The Whitecaps jerseys they had were very cool as well.

I started to put together a collection of old Canadian Jerseys that I could find. The project fell out as I have been too busy with everything else. This may be the jersey you are talking about:

But if you want to see all the jerseys, Check out the page I put together thus far.

Razcle, very cool page. Nice work.
