Vic
Wouldn't surprise me. Like most people who've been in positions of power for a long time he has a long history of complaints from the players/parents he doesn't select. They tend to outnumber the one's he does who swear by him. There's a good piece out there called "The Penalty of Leadership" which was written about 100 years ago and is pretty relevant. It's a great piece of writing and if you track it down and give it a read I guarantee the last line will remain with you your whole life.

Apparently it is from a 1915 Cadillac advertisement and Elvis famously framed it above a piano at Graceland. http://theurbanophile.blogspot.com/2007/01/penalty-of-leadership.html If this statement is true though... the CSA will one day be recognized as the standard bearer for all that is right and just in the world of football. Vic
It really is a tremendous piece of work. I had no idea about the King. Thanks for digging that up. That's a very thought-provoking concept. Given the federal sport organization and funding model in the country (and perhaps even around the world) all sports will always have a national body. Another application of the writing would be the moment someone has a better solution and the will to enforce it, history (and the CSA) will change. Soccer9
Found this interview with Pellerud on the T&T U17 Team and his experience in general so far in T&T. When asked if he looks forward to a potential match-up next year vs Canada at the U17 WC, he smiles and says "yes of course but Canada still has to qualify and this will be difficult." He makes reference to the U17 Canadian programme not having a big budget. I hope our girls can prove him wrong...! http://ttffonline.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1137&Itemid=
Vic
I don't know the date on that but it's been there a while because I watched them a few weeks ago. We won't have the resources of the Americans or Trinis, but there probably aren't many other CONCACAF programs with much in the way of funding, although about half have the advantage of small footprints and more training opportunities. But I imagine he was referring to our brutal draw and just two World Cup spots up for grabs as CONCACAF is the host. Our only two methods of reaching the World Cup are: a) beat Mexico and Jamaica to win the group, and then beat a very good Costa Rican program in the semi (who beat us 2-0 in the semi last year). place second in the group and then beat the #1 Americans in the semi. I hope they manage to find a way to walk that tightrope and if they can it likely means a good crop and a number of quality players we'll one day see on the bigger stage. Soccer9
Vic, ya pretty brutal, Option#1 seems more "doable". Good crop of players or not, you need a decent system of play to win at this level. So let's hope this will start coming together at next camp in 2 weeks time. And let's hope this warm-up tournament that we were suppose to take part in February also takes place to give the girls some international experience. Vic
Just an agent... I'll send you a PM about it, I'm sure it would be really handy for your site. Looks like she got the family wheels. Vic
She's just a young kid and it was an American interview. If it was Canadian it would have gone a different route completely. Based on Dad's playing career she would probably have spent more time living in the States than in Canada, and the USA is the #1 women's team in the world. It's a pretty natural dream based on her past and without a doubt a similar boy in England or Italy would dream of the EPL or Serie A. That's just the way teenagers look at the world. The Americans delay moving kids into their senior teams compared to us, and making the American team is extremely hard to do. She could either change her viewpoint or fall short. I'm all for doing everything we can to help anyone eligible with both the skill and the desire to leave every breath and ounce of energy on the field to win. Karma has a way of looking after itself. Understood, but if she ends up making the team then switching later on, she is taking the development opportunity away from another girl who's dream it is to play for Canada, and Canada only. I remember not too long ago a young Niagara girl put her university career and life on hold to play for Canada U20s, only to be told she was the last cut because they wanted to give an opportunity to a 14 year old phenom named Sydney Leroux. How'd we make out? I realize all is fair in love, war and NT soccer, but it just doesn't sit all that well with me.
Vic
No, anytime I've come across anything interesting and put it up from any of the V's sites I've always given credit. Least I can do. But now I'm confused about the time the writer (Rhiannon Potkey) said she posted it - "Posted January 9, 2010 at midnight." While reading it I remember thinking it was bizarre that anyone posts at midnight and was surprised I was reading it so quickly. But I just checked your history and you put the link up at 2010-01-09T18:57:21Z UTC which is before I thought it was even posted. In standard nomenclature, does "midnight on the 9th" mean the end of the day on the 9th, or does it mean the beginning of the day on the 9th? I just read this post but am still no closer to the answer: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/548775.html But either way - if you got it a few hours before me or magically the day before it was posted, I probably just sent that PM for nothing
Vic
Ivan, it doesn't make it inspirational or come close to salving the disappointment of that Niagara girl, but I think the part that makes it consumable is the American NCAA system doing a large part of our women's development. In cross-border terms our development trade ratio is extremely positive. We've also had duals and naturalized Americans in our women's youth and senior teams as well. And I'm sure there are a number of kids in all our youth camps who have other national options via lineage we just don't know about. Our top two vote-getters on the men's team this year (Klukowski and Jackson) are probably in that list. Not all duals work out, but not all don't work out either. I think you have to go into it all in good faith and just go with the best team you can field.
