Razcle
In case anyone was wondering why there were so many penalities in this match read the Following article from the Macedonia International News Association http://macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/10636/50/ Shout out to ACSertL from RPB for diggin this up
jpg75
Wow, that hits home...and talk about karma, we really didn't deserve a decent result in that game. "UEFA is not disputing the result, rather according to our sources they are looking at the 4 penalties, particularly the ones awarded to Canada. From having watched the match, UEFA may be onto something as both penalties awarded to Canada were non-existent, borderline ridiculous. The two times Canada managed to reach the Macedonian penalty box, they came away with penalties!" [V]

[V] I won't dispute the premise that the ref was beholden to some kind of betting syndicate in awarding 4 penalties, but I will dispute the analysis that Canada's were any less deserving than Macedonia's. Keegan
That final penalty was the weakest call in injury time Does seem fishy

redhat
Too bad the same scrutiny could have been extended to Archundia during past WCQers against Honduras and the 2007 Gold Cup match against the U.S. In the case of Macedonia, we screwed up our chances regardless of the refereeing. Oh well, next ...
El Hombre
Maybe our guys were on to the fact that there were shenanigans afoot which is why we deliberately</u> missed both our penalties?

Agreed. The weakest of the four was the 1st Macedonian penalty. But the most clear of the calls was probably the 2nd Macedonian one which is the one deep into injury time IIRC. redhat
From the blog above: "It's true that there are investigations about the referee because he has very bad background. But the rumors that the federations or some players were involved are not true. The referee was connected with big bettors in Asia and he fixed the match with no involvement of Macedonia and Canada. The big bets were on Over 2.5 goals." Does that mean the ref wanted the score to have over 2 goals, hence the final dubious PK for the Macedonians? masster
quote:Originally posted by BrennanFan wow. i guess the ref was more upset over hume and jackson's misses than we were! HAH! All kidding aside though, the word fix is not correct in this context. In my opinion, fix means that the outcome of the game is determined. From what we know, the ref wanted at least three goals in the game but he didn't really care who scored them. In fact, we should have benefitting from the refs desire to give out penalties but we didn't. The thing I don't like about all of this talk is that it is diminishing what was really an awful performance.

Razcle
^If you watched the game or highlights (lowlights) at all, you could tell it was a game of an experienced team that just finished WC2010 qualifiers against some of the best in the world, Vs a team that failed to qualify almost a year prior. We were rusty beyond belief and it showed. I am just glad we got 2 run-outs in the month. This hopefully will be the new norm for the CMNT and we will soon be playing to our potential. superbrad
http://www.socceramerica.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=35871 Typical American propaganda. The team that can't shoot straight by Paul Kennedy, Tuesday, Dec 15, 2009 7:01 AM ET [MATCH-FIXING SCANDAL] How bad has the Canadian national team fallen? Out of Europe comes word that its recent friendly against Macedonia may have been fixed, and Canada couldn't take advantage of two penalty kicks it was awarded by Bulgarian referee Anton Genov. Iain Hume and Simeon Jackson both missed from the penalty kick and Canada went on to lose, 3-0. UEFA is investigating whether Genov awarded four penalty kicks -- Goran Pandev converted the second of two penalties for Macedonia one minute into stoppage time -- as part of a scheme by Asian bettors to collect on the over/under, which was 2.5. The Canadian Soccer Association has denied that any Canadian players were involved in a bid to fix the game. Canada was involved in a match-fixing scandal in 1986, shortly after its only appearance at the World Cup. Four players were arrested on charges of fixing games in a tournament in Singapore. Criminal charges were later dropped but they were suspended by the CSA for "bringing the game into disrepute."
