Grizzly
Just watched the story on CBC about the woes of Leafs fans this year. Often posters here make comments like, "If our national team ever qualifies for the World Cup in my lifetime...." I am not the youngest Voyageur yet even in my lifetime Canada has played in a World Cup but the Leafs have never won the Stanley Cup nor even played in the final. So I thought it might be interesting to take a little fun poll on the following question: What will happen first, the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup or Canada qualifying for the World Cup? Obviously since the Stanley Cup is played for every year this gives the Leafs more chances but on the other hand they are competing against more teams (if one discounts the teams in CONCACAF with no chance of qualifying). Canada talent wise is closer to the teams it is competing against but in professional sport one can change the team rapidly while the national team is stuck with who we have. Both teams have incompetent management but the Leafs are rich while the CSA is poor. My vote is that Canada will qualify for the World Cup before the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. Macksam
Canada will qualify for every world cup after 2018. The Leafs have 8 years to get their act together if they want to win this little, insignificant competition.
Bertuzzi44
Well, since the Leafs traded BOTH of their 1st round draft picks for the next two years (plus their 2nd round pick next year), I'd say the future doesn't look good.[] Canada will qualify for the World Cup before the Leafs make the playoffs. Errrr, I mean, win the Stanley Cup.[]
Soju
I think Canada will qualify before Toronto wins the stanley cup. here's another one, TFC win the MLS Cup or Canada qualify for the WC?
pulsar
Canada will go to the world cup wayyyyyyyyyyyy before Toronto wins a Stanley Cup.....Toronto has mastered a successful losing formula and seem content with a losers profit.
gator
Grizzly, there is absolutely NO chance the Leafs will win a cup in our lifetime! Before I take the dirt nap I expect to see Canada qualify regularly for the World Cup, TFC, Impact and Whitecaps win MLS cups, and of course several more cups for the Habs! Please, NO cups for the Leafs!

tmcmurph
MNT to WC. We have 3 top level teams (well 2 and 1 in waiting) which is more or less what we had in the 70's. The top level NA club presence is crucial to getting back and we have that in place. Call me delusional if you want but I think we will make it to Brazil in 2014! The club effect works much faster than most think it does.

We certainly have the talent to qualify.

I wasn't trying stir the ****e with those comments because i would easily say the same thing about the Canucks as well....even though i do support them i am not blind to the fact that we are no better.....hmmmm....no, we are way better than the "buds" but just no closer to a cup. the biologist
A TO-based team winning a championship ? Will we ever see it happening again ? At least with the MNT, there's input from all around the country compared to from just TO, that can only helps our MNT to qualify way before a single TO team does something good !!! shawn_strat
I would even say that Canada will qualify for the world cup before any Canadian team wins the Stanley Cup.
