Until the the specifics are revealed, you can bet the answers will be typical BC. And then expect the same afterwards. And then expect it to continue. But you have to admit, 500 million for a roof, if it is in fact just for the roof only, is absolutey ridiculous. Beautiful stadiums are built for less. I want a stadium as much as anyone else but 500 million for a roof!?!?!?

It's getting into Big O territory...

The original cost for BC Place in 1983 was $120 million (just happened to come across it in an old Whitecaps media guide the other day).

As for the cost of the roof and the financing, I'm waiting for the details to come out in about half an hour before I'll form an opinion. CKNW (www.cknw.com) says they will have the announcement live. I expect the Team 1040 will do the same. It begins at 9:30 am Pacific.

I don't think the announcement is live. I'm listening to CKNW and they said that they will be taking calls.

It's done. It's a fixed price contract worth $458 million, with the construction company responsible for overruns. The government still says they will recoup the cash by LEASING the land around the stadium for development.

Here are the details:

Right you are. It was 126. Maybe it was 60 for the roof? I remember the 60 million price tag from that era on the news from that time. Or maybe it was the original cost before overruns etc? Still at 126 for 25 years it was a good deal and has worked out well for the city.

No, but it's not cheap. Cowboys Stadium ($1.8 Billion U.S.), Wembley, ($1.3 billion), Montreal Olympic Stadium (about $700 million AFTER stadium construction in roof construction, repairs & financing).

That said, if you combine the original construction cost & the new roof it's a little less than the new Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis:

EDIT: Make that A LOT less...didn't factor in inflation or the US Dollar exchange.

EDIT #2: The cost quoted for BC Place is for the complete renovation and the construction of a 30,000 seat temporary stadium on the Empire Stadium site.

A couple of answers to various queries upthread. From memory, the cost of the stadium was 123 million (1983-constant) dollars. So, factoring in inflation, that is equivalent to 242 million 2008 dollars. So, in real terms this current investment is about twice what it cost to build the dome originally. (Of course, there was a lot of speculation at the time, that the price was actually higher but Bill Bennett's SoCred government moved expenses to other government agncies, etc.)

The proposed cost of renovations includes not only the cost of the roof, but the cost of interior renovations--many of which have been completed--for the Olympics. Approximately 65 million will have already been spent by the times the Games open in February.

In addition, I have heard that the full cost also includes the cost of building a temporary home for the B.C. Lions--and presumably the Whitecaps for the first few months of their 2011 season at ths site of the old Empire Stadium. If the Whitecaps do end up playing much of their first season at a temporary facility Empire it will be appropriate as that's where the 'Caps played their first game on a rainy April in 1974 against the San Jose Earthquakes. A young boy, I wa in attendance. (Maybe the 'Caps should have the 'Quakes as their opponent for the home opener in 2011.)

Well, the stadium seating capacity was about 60K. Maybe that's why that number created such an indelible impression upon your gray matter.

Is it the most expensive roof in the history of the world?

No, those are stadium costs. Is there a more expensive roof anywhere in the world?

The primary cost for a retractable roof stadium is often the roof itself...that's why skydome (which was essentially a $100 million stadium) cost $500 million with the roof.

So yes...all of these roofs cost more than the new one for BC Place.

FYI the $75 million figure for the roof on Skydome was from the original estimate of $150 million to build the entire stadium. It ended up almost 2.5 times over budget at $500 million.

With Wembley, the cost overuns on construction alone were almost $600 million canadian (332 million pounds). Most of that was due to the complexities of the roof. A construction accident involving the roof delayed the project for 10 months and contributed greatly to the overuns.

Any way you look at it, the BC Place roof is certainly not the cheapest option. But in this case, it is the correct option. The roof guarantees that MLS is secure. It guarantees another 40 events and an additional 81 usage days per year. This is already on top of the 200 event days BC Place is used for now. There's little real estate to build a new stadium downtown, and neither the Caps, The Lions, The conventions, restaurants, hotels, stores and businesses want to see this traffic move away from the city. A lot of the transit infrastructure is already in place. And we'll finally have a stadium people will actually look forward to going to.

Today, the choice was this or nothing. Out of the two, this is the better choice.

Mass, there is no rapid transit at the PNE Site, that and the Burnaby Lakes area are the two worst traffic spots in all of the Metro area along Highway 1 and the site has had immense surface drainage issues since the days of Empire, when it went to an artificial surface.. That area is bad all around save for tradition...

There were only ever three solutions for stadia in Vancouver Metro.

1) Refurbish BC Place or tear it down and build a new one on it's site in general visa vis Kingdome -> Qwest and Safeco in Seattle

2) Build on the lands orginally offered by Larry Campbell to Kerfoot at Station/Main area adjacent to the train station which the lefties have now hi-jacked for hospital/low income housing

3) Allow Kerfoot to build his own stadium on his dime, on the lands he owns, on the waterfront.
