Be careful when you mentioned that Honduras was robbed by Spain in 82, you don't want Jeffrey to read this... :D

Congrats to Honduras too.

I've got the footage and I know what it means for the sanctity of the tournament for the host nation to qualify for the second round. Think about it, can you imagine losing to Honduras in your opening game, especially after El Salvador lost 10-1 the previous day.

Sorry, Jeffy.

Priceless clip of the Honduran radio announcers calling Bornstein's goal which qualified them for the World Cup:

Somehow I can't imagine Nigel Reed or Gerry Dobson utterly losing their heads like that on the air. Which is too bad. If we qualify in my lifetime, and I'm not in a stadium somewhere at the time, I want to experience it like that.

I have great difficulty being happy for any of our CONCACAF competition making the big show, especially after previous altercations with their fans (don't forget Montreal!) during qualifying.

But in fairness they're more deserving than the Ticos or Mexicans, in my opinion. And with all their troubles at home. So good luck to them.

I still remember the Lenarduzzi orgasm during Hastings goal in the Gold Cup game against Mexico in 2000.

Great clip, G-L. All they say is "Goal, goal, goal, goal for the United States. We are in the World Cup! We are in the World Cup!"

This is what this game is all about, making that most beautiful stage in sports.

As for Honduras in Spain: the real problem was that a team that was Eurocup finalist two years later, a really good team, was so under par in its own World Cup, at a time when the country was a new democracy and had everything going for it. The format was tough though, with the second phase with three teams and two games.

You have to admit the penalty call against Honduras was possible, it was rigorous but possible, and Spain was not outplayed by them after their early goal. What is generally considered to have been the really scandalous penalty call, with the repeated shot, was the one Spain got against Yugoslavia.

I agree and have mixed feelings as well. I think Honduras is definitely the 3rd best team in CONCACAF presently and think they have a very good team which is well coached. On the other hand it is hard to be happy for them with the cheating style they play and the behaviour of their fans.

I don't have much respect for the stupid Hondurans fans I met last year in MTL but I'M not really bothered by that. Pretty much any team who shows up at the WC has it's bunch of loosers.

However, I do like their squad and their play. I think they'll be a tough matchup to whoever they play. I wouldn't be surprise at all by a second round appearance.

I guess you and me had the same bad experiences from Honduran people the night of September 6th 2008. That's why I was cheering for Costa Rica for the 3rd place in the WCQ. Sadly, Honduras qualified instead.

If you guys think that the Honduran fans and players are worse than the Costa Ricans or anyone else in Central America, then you haven't been paying attention. Then again, your national team plays so few meaningful matches that it must be difficult for you to form an educated opinion. Their fans cheered the US as the US left the field in San Pedro Sula. Never in a million years would that have happened in Saprissa or San Salvador or GC. Never. Those same fans have the reputation of being the most respectful Central Americans at games played in the US. Their players may not be angels but they're much classier than anyone else in Central America. You'd be surprised at what you could learn when watching matches other than first-round WCQs and Gold Cup quarterfinals.

Well thank you for the cultural lecture there sporty. The fans in the stands in the US were probably worried about their green cards. Their behaviour didn't live up to the lofty standards you espouse when Honduras played Canada in Montreal (game referenced in above posts) in 2008. In fact, they were rather piggish louts IIRC. Hurl worthy, if you like.

I have a tape of a game from Tegucigalpa (1993), where Canadian fans were advised to bring umbrellas to the game. The reason why became evident when Canada dared to score. Our fans, and team, were bombarded with anything not nailed to the ground. Eventually the military was called out to calm the crowd down. It became such an embarrassment that the video feed of the game was pulled (not once, but twice) while the military tried to calm the Honduran fans. I am sure there are others on this board who can back me up about this game as it is rather infamous.

I can understand why people get upset with the Honduran players and fans (especially those living in Canada). I can also sympathize, to an extent, with the Honduran people living in a 3rd world country with little else to get excited about. I can also understand that losing to (or even tying) Canada, must be a national shame as we are more known for hockey.

For me, I just like the underdog. And seeing as Canada isn't involved I hope Honduras does well as it will go a long way in that country. They were great in 82 and were right there with us till the end of qualifying when we made it in 86. It is kind of a strange love/hate relationship.

Is Honduras the worst country, no. It is though a pretty close race when it comes to how Canada is treated when south of the US and in our own country by people who have come here for a better life. That is the toughest to swallow.

I did notice a big difference between the Honduran fans in the national team game and those who came for Impact-Olympia. To say that the Honduran national team fans or at least a large number of them were poorly behaved would be a big understatement. Yet the fans for the Olympia game were really cool. They even thought it was really funny that the Ultras had learned the very insulting song that the Marathon supporters sing about them. I think the difference can mostly be attributed to the fact that for the national team game most of the fans came from Honduras or US cities while the Olympia fans mostly lived in Montreal. You don't shi-t in the bed that you are sleeping in. I think most of the Jamaica fans in Toronto were cool for a similar reason in that most of them were from Toronto. Why would you try to piss off the people you live with every day. However, if you are living in another country you probably don't care so much what we think of you.
