GOL TV Canada morphing into TFC TV

The metamorphosis has started. Gol TV is now altering their schedule toward TFC-oriented programming on match nights and shifting away from foreign-based programming that is offered simultaneously on Gol TV USA. For instance last week, instead of showing the Brasileirao match (Flamengo-?) live they bumped it all the way back to 11pm on tape delay and bumped the 2 Colombian league games that they've been showing on Saturday nights for the past 3 years to Sunday. What did we get instead? MLS Weekly, TFC Game in an hour (the Colorado road game from the week prior), and Toronto FC Space. I didn't want to jump the gun in case it was an aberration, but it's happening again this weekend:

From 6pm to 9pm it's; TFC Game in an hour (last weeks game), TFC Space, MLS Weekly and the TFC Preview show. The Vitoria-Internacional game is bumped to tape at 9pm and the Colombian games probably knocked over to Sunday afternoon again where they'll bump the Sunday afternoon Brasileirao game (Santo Andre-Sao Paolo) to tape delay later that night.

Here's the Gol TV USA schedule:

http://www.goltv.tv/index.php?date=20090919&tz=eastern〈=es&target=programacion

6:00 pm Brasileirao - Vitoria vs Internacional

8:00 pm Colombia - Santa Fe vs Junior

10:00 pm Colombia - Once Caldas vs Nacional

Honestly, do they need to be showing MLS Weekly, TFC Space and last weeks Game in an hour on match night? Can't they just be happy that they're playing these shows REPEATEDLY - as in Monday through Friday - throughout the week? Even the TFC Preview show is already being aired on Thursday and Friday nights. I'd rather they bring back coverage of the Salvadorean league (Ughh) than watch a bunch of non-experts trying to tell me things i don't already know while pretending to be unbiased towards their employer. Enough of the recycled programming and enough of the corporate lackeys blah, blah, blahing on Saturday night primetime.

^ I realize you're joking, but to answer your question: I expect them to leave it the way it was, it was a niche channel that provided coverage of leagues you wouldn't otherwise find elsewhere. If they wanted TFC TV to promote their soccer team, they should have probably just started their own channel from scratch.

I was only half joking. Buying an existing digital specialty channel brought an established marketing identity, a ready built subscription base and saved the time and nausea of going through the regulatory process to setup a brand new channel to list just a few of the advantages. If they are looking to cut costs or free up air time for more TFC/MLS coverage, programming will change for sure. I am not a subscriber to GolTV so have no axe to grind. I object to paying a subscription for a marketing vehicle and then having to tolerate commercials as well on top of it all.

I think a Marvell Wynne basketball dribbling video would be nice!

Vitti would also deserves a "greatest misses" video but you could also add a "Dribbling to nowhere with Pablo" episode.

BTW, the best vid I've seen of that sort was "Dunk on me, I'm Shawn Bradley" of the Best Damn Sport Show Period. Hilarious.

I dont see why they should have started their own channel to promote TFC when it easier to just buy one. Had they been restricted from doing so, they probably wouldn't have bought the channel.

We should not be surprised by this actually because, much like Leafs TV and Raptors NBA TV, thats what these channels exist for. The transformation to a TFC channell started a long time ago and I would hazzard to estimate that more than 3/4 of the programs are TFC related and, personally, I am OK with that and I am sure that many TFC fans feel the same.

Look, nothing is legally stopping them from buying an existing channel and i agree that for them it makes more sense to do it then start from scratch. However, as a subscriber to Gol TV for the past 3-4 years what they're doing is utter bull**** and i'm pissed that they're ruining a niche channel that i enjoy watching. From my standpoint i'd respect them more if they'd gone ahead with TFC TV instead of ruining Gol TV for their own corporate needs.

Is there coverage of la Liga the same as last year?? 3-4 matches a week, plus 3-4 Bundesliga matches, and whatever they pick up from the Argentina, Mexico, and Columbia leagues?

Yes there is La Liga but I never saw Argentinean first division games. Right now there Brazilian and Colombian league games, and a little from Uruguay too.

Don't get me wrong, I sympathise with your annoyance that a channel you have enjoyed for a few years is changing but that's why we have a 500 channel TV universe... plenty of choice. Lots of digital specialty channels morph into something different as time passes, catering to coporate needs, changing market demand and the competitive environment. If you no longer enjoy GolTV, drop your subscription. That's one of the advantages of non-bundled, subscription programming ;)

Unfortunately there are not many substitutes for Gol TV. Fox Sports World Canada is affordable, but it's programming has taken a severe hit over the last couple of years, to the point where Italian Serie A, 1 Argentine game and USL coverage are about the only reasons one would subscribe to it. Setanta has excellent programming, but it costs almost $20 a month.

Gol TV is relatively unique in the programming it provides to avid Soccer fans. I would compare it to an untouched, presteign forest to an avid outdoorsman. Then an eco-tourism company buys the land and builds zip lines and starts nailing information boards all over the different trees and starts labelling trails etc. It's still a forest, you can still walk around in it and observe nature, but the difference is noticeable.

Well I guess then at the end of the day you get what you pay for. The big leagues have such bloated budgets that they must needs charge two arms and both legs for TV rights which quickly filters down to the viewer.

Fox Sports World Canada's greatest strength is "Fox Soccer Report". Its hands down the best Football show on Canadian TV.

I agree that Setanta is great. For me its not that expensive if I look at how much it is compared to the rest of my cable bill, and how much I watch it. For me its half of my TV watching and a tenth of my bill. Thats good value, at least for me.
