Lorne
A nice individual effort by Byers...close control in the box to evade tackles before cooly slotting the ball home. He then ran to the corner flag and pulled out of his pocket a hankerchief sized flag. Antigua? The game was interupted, much earlier, by some dude who ran to the center of the field and planted a 6 foot tall double stake with some kind of gemmed star on the top. What was that? And then he littered some torn wallpaper onto the field before being dramatically tackled, shackled and carried away. Leighton O'brien played attacking midfield and had a complete stinker of a game. It seemed that no-one wanted to pass to him because he was soooo inept. He was replaced for the second half and I would be surprised to see him wear the Impact colours ever again. Also replaced at halftime was Zanzan. I assume that he is jet lagged from International duty. Di Lorenzo was the player of the game.
mtlfan
So why did Dos Santos make 8 roster changes two games before the playoffs? This is not the way to tune up a team. Why do players have to take off their shirts? I would suggest the clubs put a clause in the contract that would severly punish thiS useless stupid behavior. How about $10,000.00 in the USL. MTL_4_LIFE
A goal from Peter Byers at the 85th minute of play allowed the Montreal Impact (12-10-7) to tie the Minnesota Thunder (7-12-10) by a 1-1 score (halftime 0-0), Sunday, in front of 12,805 spectators, at Saputo Stadium. The Impact therefore remains unbeaten in its last seven matches(5-0-2). With 43 points and one match to play, the Impact remains fifth in the USL First Division standings, one point ahead of the Rochester Rhinos, which tied Miami FC 0-0, today at Marina Auto Stadium. “We were invisible in the first half and unable to create something. But the message was understood at halftime and we then dominated the second half,” noted Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. “We circulated the ball well and created scoring chances. I think the score reflects well the match. With this result, we stay in 5th place.” After receiving a short pass from Roberto Brown in the 18-yard box, Byers controlled the ball, dribbled two Thunder players, then took a left-footed low shot that beat the Thunder goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel to his left under his arm. It was for Byers his 4th goal of the season, all scored in the last seven matches. “It was a tough match and we had to make an important effort to get the goal,” commented Byers. “I waited for my chance and I took advantage of it. I’m happy because we managed to continue our undefeated game sequence. We cannot afford to lose in front of our fans.” The Thunder opened the score at the 6th minute. After accepting a pass from midfielder Nate Nox, forward Marco Terminesi sent a lob shot from the penalty point that defeated goalkeeper Matt Jordan. Jordan, who returned in front of the net after missing the last match due to back spasms, registered four saves on eight shots. “In the beginning of the game, we made a number of mistakes which cost us,” mentioned team captain Mauro Biello. “However, we managed to come back after halftime with the right attitude. We worked hard and that allowed us to obtain at least one point.” Byers was ejected in stoppage time of the second half after receiving his second yellow card of the game. He will have to serve an automatic one-game suspension in the next match. Defender Nevio Pizzolitto missed the game due to a two-game suspension issued for accumulating an 8th yellow card this season, while forward Eduardo Sebrango was out of the lineup due to an injury to his right hand. Defender Stephen deRoux played his 50th career game in the USL-1, entering at the 45th minute. With a crowd of 12,805 spectators, the Impact will have greeted a total of 180,494 spectators at Saputo Stadium, with an average attendance of 12,033 spectators in 15 regular season matches. The Montreal Impact will play its last season match Friday, September 18 against the Carolina RailHawks, in Cary, at 7 pm (USLlive.com). The quarterfinal round will take place between September 23 to 27. How about $10,000.00 in the USL. Wow that's like a quarter of most of these guys' salary. Harsh. I could not understand all the roster changes. The ineffectual first half was a clear result of players not being used to eachother, with Aboubou, O'Brien, and Zanzan clearly not reading the other players correctly. Once a few more regulars got on it's a credit to guys like Pesoli, Jordan, Brown, and Gjertsen that they managed to get everyone on the same page but the end of the game. Weird, weird coaching decision. Placentino, Biello and L. O'Brien looked absolutely brain-dead.... was it someone's stag Saturday night?
jonovision
One outcome of this weird lineup was that this was the "least Canadian" lineup the squad has put out all season. FWIW, I track this on my blog, and the three Canadians playing (Placentino, Gatti, Biello) and the 196 minutes played are the lowest numbers of the season. I started doing it last year, because I wanted to hate on TFC's roster moves. Now that TFC has made a commitment to acquiring Canadians, both quantity and quality, it has become more interesting. OBW and Sebrango make the calculations a bit fuzzy, but Vancouver will likely come out on top any way I count it.
Bratworst
Highlights of game for me: (1) Byers goal (2) Dude being allowed to casually walk to the center of Saputo pitch, triumphantly plant star pole in field (for similar events please see Armstrong landing on the moon) and then emphatically strewing filth all over center field. Birds were dive-bombing bits of food (or who knows what) left on the pitch for a long time after, pretty hilarious, and one of the Minnisota players kicked the ball at him, but just missed. The security just stood there for the whole thing, only rushing on once he was throwing garbage everywhere. I don't think the players were impressed with how it was dealt with, Jordan appearing to run up and yell something at one of the security guards as they were dealing with it all. Some of the players even tried to stop the guy while he was doing his garbage dance. All in all the Impact were lethargic and less than impressive, hope it's not something they'll take with them into the playoffs.

I wouldn't feel safe if I was an Impact player.

Grizzly
That guy who came on the field was one of the weirdest things I have seen at a soccer game. He probably got so far because he walked on the field so calmly that at first noone noticed him. Then he plants that weird two pole contraption with a star at the top at centre field before strewing the field with what looked like clothes. At that point there was about 12000 people with the collective thought of: WTF? You can see a bit of it at 1:05:40 of the video archive on USLLive.com though unfortunately they take the camera off him after the beginning so you can't see security take this guy down very hard. Does anyone know what the message of this was? It is funny that the announcers comment about the stripper who tried to enter the field earlier this year and was stopped by security before she could take anything off yet this guy is able to go to centrefield and plant his poles. It was interesting to note how much we missed Braz on the field and how much he brings the ball forward for us. I guess Dos Santos was using this game as one last chance to play the subs before the playoffs and some did better than others. Marco Terminesi who scored for Minnesota is Canadian and has 6 goals in 16 games for the Thunder.
SteveBeau
^^^^ Apparently the pitch highjacker said in french "Jesus loves you" while security was hauling him off the field..
Mpenza
Nobody really talked about it anywhere, but that was one of the most violent take-downs I've seen in my life. He had three guys on to of him with their knees in his back and the back of his neck and they actually handcuffed him before dragging him out. Then frigg knows what happened to him afterwards. That violence was unnecessary.

Grizzly
The other question is how do you get this big pole thing with a star on it into the stadium in the first place and then walk around with it for 30 minutes with noone noticing? He had to have climbed the back fence behind the South stand with his stuff just prior to climbing onto the field. There is only one security guard walking that side of the fence and the ushers at the South stand entrances leave the stair ways after 10-15 minutes. Or if he did enter with a ticket maybe he threw that stuff over the fence beforehand.
SoccerfanatiQ
As for the staff thingy that the retard had, I heard from a guy next to me, that the security didn't want to let him in with that thing. Ivan
quote:Originally posted by Mpenza That violence was unnecessary. I disagree. The guy was an idiot but at no time did he threaten the players or resist arrest. He didn't even run away when security came. I thought security overdid it as well as they took him down very hard and were very rough taking him off the field. I don't feel sorry for the guy because that is the risk you run doing stuff like that but if security had injured him they could have been in legal trouble. Generally the principle is minimum force necessary and that was exceeded in this case.
