What would the Montreal Impact MLS team roster be

Now that so many good international Canadian players have made it to Toronto FC, and in two years from now, Vancouver will enroll its fair share of Canadian internationals as well! Who do you think Montreal will go after if it makes it in 2012?

Wich international canadian player can you see ending up in Montreal!

Or even what do you think the roster is going to look like!

It will be heavily filled with americans and foreigners like TFC's roster, because Canada lacks a lot of the volume of players who can compete at a third division level. I would expect this to disappear for TFC over the next three years or so, as they further establish their academy system. The Whitecaps will be fine as well. Montreal either needs to step up development or start hunting for some players to bring in from Europe.

Like somebody said in another thread, the TFC Academy system won't pay dividends until the guys who started as U14s and U16s start to come through. So unless you are expecting a team full of 19-20 year olds, it will take longer before it starts stocking the main TFC roster.

In fact, I doubt it will have a significant impact for the next 10 years or so.

Toronto has done well at bringing in established Canadian MLS talents (Serioux and De Rosario), and recently has tried its hand at bringing in players from Europe (Gerba and now De Guzman).

Attakora is the only success story on the young player side, and with the apparent reluctance to give Gabe Gala any playing time, there are no young Canadians on the horizon.

Vancouver has a base of young Canadians that are already gaining experience in USL-1. Some may do well at the MLS level, others may not.

Montreal does not have any young Canadians in the team right now gaining significant minutes, unless you count a 26-year old Djekanovic. If they enter the league in 2012, and Canadian roster restrictions similar to TFC's are imposed, they will either have to heavily recruit guys like Hainault, Jakovic, Johnson, etc. (if they are still in MLS), or pray to God that their TR Attak players are ready to step up in a big way, which seems unlikely.

However, just because TFC has a nice Canadian contingent right now, it doesn't mean that will always be the case. If Nana goes to Europe and JDG decides to take another crack across the pond, it is conceivable that TFC won't have any Canadians from their current roster on the squad in 2012 either (Brennan, De Ro and Serioux will be 33-35 and could all easily have retired by then). They need to continue to bring in Canadians that can't quite crack the big 4 in Europe, as well as give opportunities to young players to prove themselves.

We could keep Testo, Pesoli, Joqueviel, Brown, and possibly Placentino, DeRoux and Brillant. They'd be idiots not to try to get Bernier and Haineault, arguably the two best local products ever. Then we'd need to spend for a star striker and a star offensive midfielder. I can't see which Canadians would fit that bill. A couple of older top or second tier French and North African players would be just as good in terms of marketability to the Montreal fans.

I can see Pesoli, Joqueviel and Brown as starters. The others, no way, not MLS calibre (except maybe Placentino). If Montreal get into MLS, they will have to do like the Seattle Sounders and keep about 5-6 USL players and sign a lot of free agents including hopefully someone like Bernier or Hainault, as you say.

I've always liked the way Placentino plays, and I think he could play the role of a late game energetic sub, in the same way Roger Levesque and Sebastien Le Toux are for Seattle.

It's a decent jump up to MLS level from USL-1, despite what some "experts" on this board will tell you. Seattle has proven as much, hell even Toronto has to an extent. Honestly I can only see Joqueviel as a starter (a good one) in MLS.

Leo DiLorenzo can play, and start on any MLS team. Others to consider are;

ZanZan

Peter Byers

Roberto Brown

Stephen DeRoux

Tony Donatelli

Simon Gatti

Joey Gjertsen

Cedric Jocqueviel

Matt Jordan

Ciaran O'Brien

Stefano Pesoli

Rocco Placentino

David Testo

They might not all be starters, but all have proven that they are able to play at the Concacaf level.

As far as nationals are considered, here is a list of possible signings;

Patrice Bernier

Adrian Cann (Impact Alumni)

André Hainault

Ali Gerba

Olivier Ocean

Mike Klukowski

Add on a few USL "All Stars", coupled with a few Foreign signings, and you have yourself an MLS franchise.

Forgot about Occean. A nice trio of local boy signings in Haineault, Occean and Bernier would go a long way.

Could be an option, right after he's finished with his anger management classes![8D]

Spring 2012 is a long way from us, I expect only one or two players to still be there. Pesoli and Jocqueviel would be my favorites. Maybe Jordan too...

I bet you will see more players from the current Trois Rivières Attack team with Montreal then players from the Impact.

Mayard could be quite the player by that time.

Rest assured that I have no idea what I'm talking about, both in terms of what these players are worth now and what they may be worth in 3 years [8D]

Patrick Vierra has recently indicated that he would like to finish his career in the MLS (Hence Keano including him as DP for L'Impact) as well as Henry. Two Frenchman that who would fit real nice like in a MTL setting :D. Both would likely be ready to make that transition in about two or three years as well, who knows, maybe the MLS will have opened it up to two DPs per team by then... excellent!.....

sincerely,

Wishful Thinking
