This is the '05 thread, predicting the 2010 WCQ lineup.

http://www.canadian-soccer.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7794&SearchTerms=2010,predictions

Who we thought would contribute more, but didn't:

- Edgar

- Peters

- Simpson

- Hume

- Occean

- Sutton!

- Gyaki and Ledgerwood were also thrown in there.

Only a few had Radz and deRo starting.

Stalteri, Hutch, deGuz, Klukowski were the only successful predictions. Just 4.

Who surprised us:

- Friend

- Gerba

- Serioux

- Hastings

- Bernier

- Nakajima

Just goes to show how quickly things can change. Right now, I'd say this would be our team in 4 years:

---------Hirschfeld

Nana--Jakovic--Edgar--Klukowski

--Johnson--deGuz--de Jong

Jackson---Hoilett---Simpson

Subs: Stillo, Hainault, Ledgerwood, Straith, Hutchinson, Nakajima, Hume, deRosario, Ornoch

Hirsch, Edgar, Jackson, and Simpson could easily fall of the radar in 2 years. If Hoilett screws us, a 30 something Rob Friend will have to keep things going for us.

Yeah, but who's the manager?

(sigh)

It's too soon to tell, but if history tells us anything it's that we overvalue the potential of our young players that have yet to find significant playing time yet. With that in mind, I'm willing to bet that there will be 3-5 players in the pool that we haven't heard of yet that will come out of the Vancouver and TFC academy systems (making their pro debut in MLS).

I'd also suggest that we will have a few more 30-somethings than many will predict. Guys like DeRo that some are counting out now will still be around.

---------Hirschfeld-----------

Attakora-McKenna-Edgar-Klukowski

Hutchinson-Jakovic-De Guzman-Simpson

--------Friend-Hoilett--------

Subs: De Jong, Gerba, Hainault, Hume, Jackson, Johnson, Ledgerwood, Nakajima-Farran, Ornoch, Peters, Wagenaar, Edwini-Bonsu.

It's a tough one because some guys exceed their potential and others don't come close. I think McKenna will still be in the mix (still only 32 in 2012). He'll be a veteran presence on the back line. Right back is going to be a tough one, hopefully someone (Attakora, Ledgerwood etc.) makes it theirs. Hopefully Hutch becomes a force as he'll be in his prime. Not sure who the defensive mid will be, so I have Jakovic there as I think he could do a job. I think Friend will still be in the mix as he'll only be 31 and hopefully they don't leave him up there all alone and partner him with another striker (Hoilett if he's with us or Jackson if he isn't, maybe Gerba). Depending on where either guy is at the time, either Simpson or De Jong could work the left flank.

brennanfan,

i'm fairly content with your selections - i posted something similar to this a month or so ago. the only changes i can see will probably be at the back (if there are any).

i'm hoping to see some of the other young guys in there as well...

ricketts, hainault, street, stillo, saiko, sidra, owusu-ansah, beaulieu-bourgault, bonifacio, gage, edwini bonsu, haber, gala and gyaki

well i see where vpjr's coming from. aren't we only aloud to sign one guy from the academy every few years or something like that? and they can't be over 18... so how does tfc hang on to guys that are turning 19 or 20 without being able to sign them to a dev contract?

it can happen and does happen in vancouver but they will be in the same position as tfc in 2011 unless the rules have changed before that time.

I like the idea of bringing Gala in as a sub, and then having the other team all suddenly start quaking in their boots -- "oh no, did you hear? that's the guy who scored against Real Madrid! We're done for!"

You ever think that this year with no real draft picks this year (2nd round and 4th) that we may sign a few kids from our system to GA Deals...

Perhaps VPjr. feels that none of the U18 prospects are worth signing as a GA?

I've only seen these kids a couple of times, but very few of them jump out at you that you say "he's going to be an MLS player some day".

Kids i saw with potential: Janniere, Henry, Morgan, Matheson, Varlokostas...but are any of them worth a GA deal?

You can sign up to 4 academy players a year from MLS academies. Up to 2 players can have GA deals at any time (2 in 1 year, 1 per year etc...). You can sign the others to either regular DEV deals, or senior deals.

And hopefully those rules will be loosened (which is where I was coming from in my first post)

I don't see anyone moving from TFC-A to TFC at this time, especially not on a GA deal. Maybe a DEv deal? I can confidently say that none of those kids is worthy of a GA contract. I've seen enough of TFC Academy to be comfortable in that statement.

Alando Mathieson is an ok player. Maheu isn't bad. I've always liked Lau. Morgan has some potential. The GK is a nice player but he's gone to college from what I understand. Stamapolous is another nice player but i think he's gone off to college too.

So, basically, I doubt its gonna happen.

We won't see the benefit from these programs until the u-16s (and hopefully u-14s eventually) start to work their way through. The senior kids were already too old when things got going.

IF MLS does the righ thing and loosens the rules, I believe that there is real potential to develop young kids in the academy system that move on to Europe after a couple years in MLS. That's my dream anyway...

I think he's realizing now that he's way down the pecking order. If he doesn't get call ups for Euro qualifying he may come back to us in the summer of 2012, after Euro and before WCQ's. He'll be 29 by then.

You are ready to do the same thing they did to Radzinki, with Hoilett? Jackson is scoring more goals than Hoilett but Hoilett is 3 years younger and playing at top level. Given time he could become the best Canadian striker in a near future.

We are talking about players but what about coaches? We need to invest into them too......Leo Beenhakker has lost his job as coach of Poland(after losing the last game 3-0 and 1-1 tie with Ireland) problem is he hasn't got CONCACAF experience. But I have always enjoyed the Dutch way of thinking.

Jokes aside we need a coach that has not only the will but the $$$ to have a descent amount of friendlies at home and abroad. Play the central american countries & carribean nations. Play Play & Play them again with CONCACAF Refs at hand.

How many friendlies do you think the CSA will organise per year?

The games are almost three years away. It really is too early to tell IMO. I am however confident in how our defenders are looking at the moment I am a big fan of Jakovic, Edgar, Hainault and Nana. The only problem there is no real fullbacks, of course Nana has played outwide for TFC but with the lack of real width in recent times for Canada having natural fullbacks may be important.
