just listened to the interview:

- Asmir choose Bosnia because "it was in his family's best interests".

- Hoilett was invited to Cyprus and GC. Discussions with him continue

- JDG "is a little young to make the move at this time" to TFC but "will be a big boost to the team, to the city, to the fans, to the program"

- Simeon "won't be at his club for long....there is a lot of interest in him"

Nothing really new but decent interview regardless

I like the comment by Hart on Begovic stating that Asmir did get a lot of benefit from his time with our different youth and senior teams. He also added that a lot of time, money and energy were invested in him and that's it's tough to swallow his decision.

Hard to blame the CSA for the Begovic fiasco, puskas.

Remember how some people let Hargreaves off because he was cut from one U-17 team and supposedly got jerked around by the CSA (we just have Hargreaves's word for that last part, mind)? Well, they did everything right with Begovic. He got time at every youth level, he got attention from the coaches, he got a senior invite to Jamaica, a senior invite to Jamaica which he turned down, then another senior invite to the Gold Cup where he almost certainly would have started.

If anyone can point to something the CSA did wrong beyond locking him in a basement, keeping him captive, then forcibly throwing him out on the pitch in the Gold Cup, they haven't yet.

We did not cap him ... His name appears as the backup goalie on the CSA Matchtracker for the last WCQ against Jamaica (http://canadasoccer.com/documents/Match_trackers/20081119_FIFAWCQ_JAM_CAN.pdf). It isn't like we put out a strong team anyways. That is someone's fault ... we didn't even use all three of our substitutions.

If we manage to get players with multiple nationalities to come sit on the bench, we damn well better cap them while we have the chance. Otherwise, we're just asking for trouble.

Haven't had time to listen to the podcast ... were any questions asked about plans to play some friendlies??

At the time, Begovic was cap-tied to Canada, since he had played for our U20 team and had reached 21 years of age. There was no need to play him in order to cap him. It was the FIFA rule change earlier this year (removing the age restriction of 21) that allowed this situation to happen, and for Begovic to defect.

If you think Begovic should have been played against Jamaica in order to give him experience, that's one thing. But there is no way Dale Mitchell could have predicted that this rule change would have occurred, and he cannot be blamed for this turn of events.

Hart hinted that some work is being done about getting games (1 or 2 games i think) but didn't say when (I have to assume in 2010)

I think when a major change like this about international soccer comes down there is a lot of talk about it prior. It is not like one day everyone wakes up and it happens. Mitchell and the CSA may have or perhaps should have heard some speculation about this potential rule change and put Begovic in against Jamaica.

If that had been the case, which I really doubt, I would've expected Asmir agent to tell him not to attend this meaningless game because a rule change might be in the work and he could play for Bosnia.

Prior to the official announcement of the rule change I had never heard anything about this so I doubt it was something that FA's around the world should've known.

I'm not sure that a "change" of national team would have an impact on the current status of Begovic as a professional player. Begovic is playing in the best football system in the world and is getting playing time.

His recent success has nothing to do with neither NT as he wasn't getting playing time at international level. Therefore, I think his agent is wise enough to realize the Begovic success doesn't come from any national team.

I think you misunderstood my post that was a response to Puskas.

I was just saying that if you say the CSA and Mitchell should've known about the possible rule change you'd have to expect his agent to have known about it as well.

Yes I know what you mean, my point is that I can't imagine his agent telling which NT play for, I heard this before with Fabian Troche (which I find hard to accept that the player is obeying to his agent orders), but what I meant in my last post is that, if we had that situation you did mention in your last post, I doubt that his agent would have a say with Begovic given his current situation.

You are of course correct, and I had forgotten about him being previously cap-tied. I do think I would have played him, especially considering who else was in the team.

I also think the CSA needs to learn from this ... My comment below was meant more with an eye towards the future.

Thanks for the info (that isn't info at all ;)) about friendlies. I do hope we get some games in regularly before the next Gold Cup.
