Not much action today with the top 2 leagues off for the FIFA international break.

Rob Friend made his comeback from injury complete today as he started for Borussia Moenchengladbach in a friendly vs SC Paderborn. Paul Stalteri was in the back four in the 1-0 loss.

Lineup here:

Borussia: Heimeroth - Stalteri, Kleine, Dante (46. Brouwers), Jaurès (46. Levels) – Meeuwis (46. Marx), Neustädter - Lamidi, Reus (87. Heupt) – Neuville (79. Bäcker), Friend (79. Pirschel).

Some weekend action in the lower leagues. Will catch up on those later.

Not that I know of. He has a pretty good deal in Koeln and as far as I can tell his contract runs until June 2011. And on the personal side, AFAIK he has a German wife and children now, so why move to Greece??

He is done. All those links have incorrect information. He was released by Hertha, trialled (unsuccessfully) at Hansa Rostock. Have no clue where he is right now.

I'm worried about Friend. Raul Marcelo Bobadilla, a young striker Moenchengladbach signed this years, seems to have taken Friend's place at the starting XI, however Moenchengladbach still have problems to score and this could be help Friend.

Friend has been injured until now, so I think it is too soon to be saying he has lost his spot.

Hey Canucklefan, don't get too upset. Friend is only just getting back to fitness and will get his opportunites.

In the lower leagues, Gianluca Zavarise starts against Massih Wassey and Wassey scores for Schalke 04 reserves as they go down 2-1 against Zavarise's VfL Bochum reserves in Regional League West play. Riley O'Neill goes 90 minutes today for SV Wilhelmshaven in a 2-2 draw with Hamburger SV reserves in the Regional League Nord.

I find Wassey an intriguing story and think we should have a look at him. Young, with a big club, and Canadian roots (mother).

Eddie Sidra out injured but Kyle Porter makes a 2nd half sub appearance for Energie Cottbus' reserves today in a 3-0 loss to BFC Dynamo. U19's are in action tomorrow (as well as Mainz 05 U19's featuring Jaineil Hoillet).

Julien Latendresse-Levesque gets his first start for Energie Cottbus' U19's in a 2-0 shutout win over Hamburger SV U19's in the top A-Junioren league (Nord division). Jerome Baker starts as well, but comes out 54 minutes in, before any scoring. In the Sud division, Jaineil Hoilett goes 85 minutes up front in a 1-0 win over FC Nurnberg.

In the Bundesliga 2, Nik Ledgerwood comes on at the 10 minute mark for an injured team mate, but FSV Frankfurt drop a 3-2 decision to FC St Pauli. No sign of Jonathan Bourgault.

friend was their leading scorer two years in a row...he will get his chance again...that being said, i think he needs to step it up when he does get that chance...watching him last year, he had 3 sure chances for every goal...he needs to increase his production if he wants to stick long term.

stalteri on the other hand seems to be done...i wish it was he who came to TFC, not our best player.

I've heard that Diesel is unhappy that he was lured to Monchengladbach and then the manager up and left after the season. His replacement doesn't rate Paul the way the old one did so now Paul is rotting on the bench in Germany rather than rotting on the bench in England, where I'm sure the money was better.

Hopefully he can go elsewhere in January. Maybe a return to Bremen?[?]

But I think that that you have kind of answered the question as to why TFC has perhaps not shown the interest towards Diesel that they the have towards Deguzman.

I don't see him returning to Bremen, if he goes anywhere it will likely be a lower table team or 2nd BL team with promotion potential. He might be best to stick around MG because neither the starting left or right back has played very well so far this season. On the other hand the fact that Stalteri has hardly got on the field despite the poor play of those in front of him is not a very good sign either.

a bit like saying my beer league hockey team isnt interested in the Leafs' third line centreman...im sure if stalteri wanted to forego 80% of his salary and drop 3-4 levels in calibre any team in MLS would welcome him...only 4 guys in MLS make the average salary of a BL1 player.

unless a team is willing to pay a player like stalteri DP money, i doubt he would have interest in such a low league, while he can still attract interest in europe....and i doubt many teams, including TFC are going to give a right back DP money.

JDG clearly put money ahead of ambition...not all players will do that.

A bit off topic but Richard has posted a couple of informative pieces on Thomas Niendorf and the Whitecaps residency at www.bcsoccerweb.com, with of course lots of information on the German club connections that Thomas enjoys.

Of special interest, it appears hopeful that MLS will indeed ease its roster/development team rules to allow Residency players to be signed to pro contracts and be 'protected' so to speak by the clubs doing the development. Check it out.

Weekend Preview:

Friday

Bundesliga 1

No games involving Canadians.

Bundesliga 2

Karlsruher SC (2W-1D-2L) vs FSV Frankfurt (0W-1D-4L)

Nik Ledgerwood set to start as Frankfurt aim to get out of the basement, currently in last place.

SC Paderborn (1W-2D-2L) vs Energie Cottbus (2W-1D-2L)

Lars again on the bench.

Saturday

Bundesliga 1

VfB Stuttgart (1W-2D-2L) vs FC Koeln (0W-1D-4L)

Kevin McKenna on the bench as Koeln look to solve their early season woes, sitting in last place in the table.

Borussia Moenchengladbach (2W-1D-2L) vs TSG Hoffenheim 1899 (2W-2D-1L)

Rob Friend played for 60 minutes on Tuesday and scored a nice goal in a friendly. He could be back in the starting lineup on Saturday, or at least see significant minutes as they take on Hoffenheim, last years' surprise team who just came off a very nice CL debut this week.

VfL Bochum (1W-1D-3L) vs FSV Mainz 05 (2W-2D-1L)

Daniel Imhof set to start and perhaps looking to turn their form around, Dani Fernandes gets his first start in goal for Bochum.

Sunday

Bundesliga 1

No games involving Canucks.

Bundesliga 2

FC St. Pauli (4W-1D-0L) vs FC Kaiserslautern (3W-2D-0L)

Jonathan Bourgault in the taxi squad, looking for a spot in the 18 player game day roster in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Hamburg team shares top spot with FC Union Berlin, 2 points ahead of K'town.

Dani Fernandes has lost his starting spot as keeper this year to Philipp Heerwagen but Heerwagen was injured in their last game and will be out for at least a month. Heerwagen was Fernandes' backup last year but started the last two games of the season and outperformed Fernandes who Kicker described as inconsistent and unreliable. Heerwagen had continued to play well for the first 5 games this year but now Fernandes will get a chance to show whether he can challenge for the Number 1 again.

Thanks for the update on the Bochum keeper situation Grizzly.

Nik Ledgerwood is out injured and did not make the lineup today for Frankfurt. They are still 0-0 with Karsruher SC, just into the 2nd half.

Energie Cottbus are getting a ****-kicking in Paderborn, down 3-1 at the half despite going out to a lead early. Lars on the bench.
