La Volpe Claims Mexico Threw WCQ Game

I'll post this here since this type of stuff effects our WCQ so much. Apparently former Mexican coach Ricardo La Volpe claimed this week that his team threw the match against drum roll ****** (I am sure everyone has guessed it by now) Trinidad and Tobago. This was the last match of the Hex and Mexico was already qualified and hoping to make "things" easier for themselves since Jack would be very happy if Trinidad qualified. Unfortunately the article is only in Spanish:

UADALAJARA, Mexico. - The ex- technical director of the Mexican selection, Ricardo Antonio the Volpe loosen and I leave many doubts on that one party that he directed in the 2005 before Trinidad and Tobago, in which Mexico already was described to the World-wide one as Germany 2006, whereas the trinitarios needed a victory to aspire to the repechaje, that would take finally them to the mundialista joust.

The Argentinean assured that the idea was to have the smaller amount of possible conflicts. We do not forget that the president of the Concacaf is Warner Jack of Trinitario origin.

“I or know as I passed an eliminatory one, in first stage also she gained to him for the first time to Trinidad and Tobago, the first party, in first, not when or we were classified, that we went to I complete party not to have problems. I would say that you were right against that today she handles the Concacaf, then we said sight, the minuses possible problems and andá califícate” indicated the South American.

That party lost it to Mexico by 2 goals to 1, with two so many of Stern John and one of Jaime Lozano.

The national technician realised changes in his titular alignment facing that party, which is understandable taking into account that Mexico already was described and that wanted to take care of its players, nevertheless, these words of the technical today of the Atlas leave many questions to the air. Mexico in the era the Volpe finished being series head, and although they did not fulfill the goal to arrive at famous the fifth party, yes left to president of Concacaf Jack Warner very contented, that could see its selection in the glass of the world.

Thus then it would seem that a new “wick” in Mexican soccer is catch oning.

Interesting to note that Mexico will visit T&T in their last game of the Hex this year....

As for BBTB comment, let just say that I've seen plenty of bitter ex-coaches but saying the team you were in charge then threw the game is a pretty serious allegation. It at least deserves some kind of investigation from CONCACAF and FIFA (yeah, I know who's in charge and I don't expect any investigation to be conduct).

^ axe to grind or not, why would he just make it up if he ever wants to coach again?

And further to that, why make it up now? Has his bitterness increased the further and further away from it, with a succesison of crap Mexican coached having already come and gone?

Yes Gian-Luca it's safe to conclude that because we all know bitter ex-coaches never have an axe to grind after being fired and that everything they say subsequently can be taken as gospel.

Or, that they have motivation to air all the dirty laundry. None of this will ever be proven but it doesn't change what I believe. And I do believe it because from every game that I have seen of T & T, I have seldom considered them to be very strong compared to many others in the region. Guatemala is a much better side.

I also believe that Honduras, and there were some stories that hinted at this in the past, was paid off to lose in 2001. Honduras was in a pretty safe position to Qualify for the WC. And that the Archundia reffing in Edm was some sort pay back.

And, I too smell a payback to mex this year well when they play t&t

Money. Newspapers look for these exclusive stories in the run up to FIFA dates. In a Scottish context a bitter ex-player did that recently:-

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2009/08/10/barry-ferguson-blasts-sfa-over-boozegate-affair-just-days-before-world-cup-crunch-86908-21587007/

From the garbled babelfish translation above it's not clear to me that he actually does admit to anything more than fielding a weakened team once qualification was secured. The stuff about Jack Warner for example is not in quotes but is a phrase is added by the journalist.

I was just thinking. You might be the only person ( Canadian or from other parts of this region) that I can think of who refutes or has ever refuted any suggestion that there is corruption in CONCACAF.

I suppose that you are going to suggest that when Canada beat Guatemala 5-0 in Olympic qualifying, that this wasn't because the Guatemalans wanted to exact a pound of reverge by sticking it to teh mexican federation for throwing the game to T&T

So we're willing to believe that La Volpe is capable of being corrupt and being involved in a conspiracy with newspapers, but we're not willing to believe he is capable of such things with Jack Warner of all people?

It's pathetic the way people on here use this corruption stuff as a crutch whenever Canada fails to do well rather than facing up to fact the CMNT is not strong enough for qualification to be a reasonable expectation.

The timing of this news story is probably not coincidental because with crunch time coming in CONCACAF starting with the games over the next five days, this when when you will start to see some suspicious stuff such as odd scorelines and some incredibly bad refereeing calls late in the games. It would be very interesting to watch for no other reason.

I might have already started. For example, I found that recent 4-0 win by Honduras over Cost Rica kind of interesting. Its quite decisive (in fact its the most lopsided score in the hex so far) and you would think that these teams are much more evenly matched up than that, this is Honduras versus CRC that we are talking about, not Honduras versus Belize. But prior to that game, CRC were at the top and Hon was in that third sport ahead of Mex but the hondurans didn't have a good goal diff. But with that scoreline, now they have great goal differential which may be needed in the event of being level on points with the mexicans. We do know about the dislike that the sides in central america have for the mexicans.

^ Free Kick, i watched the Honduras - Costa Rica match and the Hondurans kicked their ass fair and square. The Mexican ref even called back an apparent Honduran goal early in the match as being a foul on the keeper (it was a close call, but probably correct as the goalie always gets the benefit of the doubt). Also, the Hondurans and Ticos don't really like each other all that much and are in direct competition for one of the qualification spots.

Here are the highlights (only first 3 goals) and commentary about the Mexican refs questionable call:

Even better version with a second called back goal (that i missed when the Bet365 stream hadn't come on yet) and Costly PK claim denied (he was given a YC instead):

Euh? In this case I think FK only example is suggesting Canada was the benificiary of corruption.

I agree that some are a little bit quick to transform every bad call Canada suffered into a possible corruption proof but in this thread we're discussing a CONCACAF matter that doesn't involve Canada. I also think that CONCACAF is far from being a clean organization so when a coach comes up with such a claim I think we have a right to "not to be surprise" by that kind of news.

If T&T is eliminated and Mexico needs a win, i smell the proverbial scratch back.

Any Spanish speakers here who can help me out with this? http://www.diez.hn/Sintesis/Lo-mas-leido/Ediciones/2009/09/03/Noticias/Los-protegidos-por-Jack-Warner

The way I understand it, the Hondurans are up in arms because they now worry T&T will try extra hard tomorrow, in order to pay back the Mexicans, nevermind waiting until the last qualifying game to return the back scratch.

Good point. Canada's WCQ struggles aside - we haven't played well enough to qualify, with or without bad calls - a lot of the events that transpire in CONCACAF seem shady. Mexico and T&T's example of Backscratchgate is suspicious enough, as was the WCQ draw of November 2007. When it comes to some of the dubious decisions that are made in this confederation, questions have to be asked.
