Austin @ Vancouver

3-2 Caps win. They played much better but had some defensive lapses that cost us. In the end we got the 3 points. The ball was on the ground most of the night and that is much better than the long ball derby last game.

Tough play by Austin to not give up and keep coming back. Made me nervous several times. Great to see someone else give up a 2 goal lead and then try to come back. They had as much luck doing it as we did!

Did Reda play? Is he hurt or has the new guy (Pejic) just won his spot?

I watched most of this match, and I have to say it was more of the more entertaining games I've seen this year featuring one of the 3 pro teams. Vancouver's 3rd goal was particularly excellent.

A few thoughts:

- There was some minor praise from the announcers of Pejic during the match, but I felt like the most critical breakdowns on the Whitecaps D came from the right side of the back line (Martin and Pejic)

- Did anybody notice Haber looking nonplussed after Gbeke took the ball from him to score the 2nd goal?

- Gbeke sure loves to give people a hard time when they don't do exactly what he wants (screaming at Burgess for passing to his left instead of his right)

Reda was resting. I think he'll start next game on Friday. 2 games in 3 days again so they need to cycle some and rest some.

Martin was responsible for a lot of the breakdowns including the second goal. He is rusty from his long time off. Khalfan makes a lot of bad passes but subbed in and played okay last night.

Yea Gbeke was not pleased with what looked like a perfect pass to me. Learn to kick left footed big guy. He does get upset too easy but he is a workhorse putting in tons of time and producing goals.

Very interesting interview with Thomas Niendorf at halftime. Off the top of my head he said that he was very pleased with the performance of the residency to date. They've put players on the first team and just signed Adam Straith to a pro contract in Germany. He said that the players learned they were on the same level as good clubs abroad from their exhibition tours to Germany and Japan. He said they have a new destination lined up (kept it to himself). He also said that it was a crucial part of the residency that players get national team experience at lower age levels. He said (WHICH SOMEWHAT SURPISED ME) that they worked closely with the CSA to get promising youngsters from outside the province into the residency. And he also said (MIGHT BE A SURPRISE TO EVERYONE) that they will no longer be getting players from Ontario as there is some kind of territorial deal with TFC.

Shoot me if I misheard.

Reda has barely touched the pitch since the aquisitions of Pozniak and Pejic. Those 2 have formed a decent CB pairing and finally brought some consistency to the back line. I think they are both superior to Reda.

Sounds like a very bad thing for the players. A restriction in labor mobility is not a good thing. As of April of this year might be illegal in Canada.

I'm not sure you can call it labor mobility since I doubt those young players are workers.

Anyways, I too don't like this. This kind of agreement is perfect for TFC to just sit and wait since they have such a big pool of players in Ontario. I'm not saying they'll do that but they should be able to attract the best players because of the quality of their youth program, not because they are in Ontario. That's not a good news IMO.

If it's a territorial "deal", then it likely goes both ways. TFC would likely not be able to get players from BC and Alberta.

Perhaps MLS has set the territories for its teams, which Vancouver now has to abide by? Who knows.

It seems pretty dumb to me, but until I actually hear more details, I'll try not to come to any conclusions. I do know that TFC will be massively upgrading their Academy program in 2010, or at least that's the rumblings I'm hearing.

Me neither, but to me it sounds like there is some sort of right of first refusal set up, and I can;t see the CSA imposing such a thing (given that they never did before).

It smacks of a MLS rule, to be honest. The Caps likely have all of Western Canada and TFC likely has Ontario east-ward.

When are they going to build a proper training center?

They were going to build one at Lakeshore Collegiate high school in Etobicoke (near the Leafs' training centre), which would include a bubbled FieldTurf pitch, but the City of Toronto told them that they are not willing to move the community usage of BMO Field to Etobicoke.

Essentially MLSE was going to use the Lakeshore Collegiate facility in place of BMO and put grass in the stadium, but with the city putting the brakes on that, MLSE pulled out of the deal with the school board (which from their statements to the media they seem to completely understand) in favour of Plan B, whatever that is.

I believe the Academy kids will still be going to Lakeshore Collegiate this fall, despite the setback.
