MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact (9-10-6) plays a second straight match at home against the Carolina RailHawks (14-5-7) Wednesday at Saputo Stadium, at 7:30 pm (Radio-Canada, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, USLlive.com). Sunday both teams tied 1-1 in front of 12,680 spectators at Saputo Stadium. Impact midfielder Tony Donatelli scored at the 33rd minute, while RailHawks midfielder John Cunliffe scored the game-tying goal at the 63rd minute.

“In the last match we played well during the first half but we fell asleep in the second half,” declared defender Cédric Joqueviel. “It will therefore be important to keep our rhythm during the entire game Wednesday. We will double our attention because this will be another match that will be based on details. It’s one of the very good teams in the league that can score at any moment.”

With five regular season matches to play, the Montreal team remains sixth in the USL First Division standings, with 33 points, one point ahead of Vancouver and two points behind Rochester. With a win Wednesday, the Impact could move up to 5th in the standings and would be playing above the .500 mark for the first time since July 5.

“We want to confirm as soon as possible our place in the playoffs,” mentioned team captain Mauro Biello. “This is a match that we have to win. We did well on Sunday but we will have to play even better Wednesday. It will once again be very physical because they have tough players. However we are playing at home, so it’s up to us to dictate the rhythm of the match as we did on Sunday.”

Midfielder Tony Donatelli’s next game will be his 100th in career in the USL First. Donatelli kicked off his career in Vancouver in 2006 and joined the Impact through a trade in June 2008.

“It’s a good achievement. I guess I did something right” said Donatelli. “I’ve been in the league for a few years, so 100 games mean something to me and I’m proud to have reached this milestone. But the most important thing is the game that we have to play.”

“We were disappointed not to get the three points in the first game because we had given a good performance, but we have another chance and we hope to get the win Wednesday,” added Donatelli. “It’s a good team that is well organized so it’s going to be another difficult game, yet we are confident. We want the win to boost our confidence before the playoffs.”

The RailHawks remain undefeated in their last nine matches (5-0-4). Before the two games against the Montreal team, the RailHawks crushed the Miami FC 9-0, Wednesday, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

Simon Gatti, who missed the last game Sunday due to a light thigh injury, will be available Wednesday, while midfielder Patrick Leduc, who has not played since August 27, 2008, will not be in the lineup.

On the RailHawks side, defenders Jack Stewart and Caleb Norkus, midfielders Joseph Kabwe, Brian Plotkin and Josh Gardner, as well as forwards Aaron King and Hamed Diallo did not make the trip to Montreal.

OTHER FACTS

• The Impact is undefeated in its last three matches, after defeating Cleveland 2-1 August 18 and shutting out Austin 2-0, August 23.

• In eight matches played to date against the RailHawks, who joined the league in 2007, the Montreal Impact has a 5-1-2 record (15GF – 5GA).

In the last post it is written that the game is on Radio-Canada tonight, however, on the Radio-Canada website there is no mention of it. Can anyone confirm that it is on TV tonight?

The game is NOT on Radio-Canada tonight. If you look at the French press release, you will see that it is only on the radio and on USLLive.com

The announcers on Radio-Canada had said that Sunday's game was the last regular season game for this season.

CAROLINA 0 IMPACT 1

A goal from Leonardo Di Lorenzo in the first half was sufficient to give the Montreal Impact (10-10-6) a 1-0 win against the Carolina RailHawks (14-6-7), Wednesday, in front of 11,173 spectators at Saputo Stadium. With this victory, the Impact has moved up to 5th in the standings and is now playing at the .500 mark for the first time since July 5.

“I think that this victory against a great team arrives at the right moment for us,” declared Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. “This win means a lot for the team. The players gave everything and they suffered a lot. The opponent put a lot of pressure on us but we remained solid. It’s with that type of attitude that the character of champions is built.”

Di Lorenzo scored at the 11th minute. On a cross from defender Adam Braz from the right wing, which was weakly headed in front of the net by RailHawks midfielder Brad Rusin, Di Lorenzo fired a powerful left-footed shot that left no chance to RailHawks goalkeeper Eric Reed. Di Lorenzo registered his first goal and a fourth point this season.

“It's a huge win for us tonight," declared Di Lorenzo. "We fought for every ball and played for 90 minutes. That’s the way we had to do it to beat them. Getting three points in those circumstances has even more value."

“Our team spirit made a difference today,” mentioned defender Adam Braz. “We did what we had to do to get our three points. We are progressing together as a unit and we are ready for the next challenge against Cleveland.”

Eight cautions were issued in this second match in four days between both clubs. Impact defender Nevio Pizzolitto, who received two cautions, was ejected at the 90th minute. Carolina RailHawks head coach Martin Rennie was also ejected at the 68th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“Two good teams and two very competitive opponents met tonight,” added Braz. “The game was very intense and sometimes players get emotionally involved into the match.”

Goalkeeper Matt Jordan, who faced eight shots, registered his sixth shut out and seventh win this season. He notably stood out at the 39th minute, when he stopped the 20-meter shot from midfielder Daniel Paladini by diving to his left.

The RailHawks got one of their best scoring chances in stoppage time when Paladini took a shot that hit the post to the left of Matt Jordan.

The Impact remains undefeated at its last four matches (3-0-1) and has not lost this season (5-0-2) when it takes the lead after the first half.

Following the last match, five changes have been made to the starting lineup: defender Stefano Pesoli, midfielders Leonardo Di Lorenzo and Joey Gjertsen, as well as forwards Rocco Placentino and Eduardo Sebrango will start the game tonight.

Midfielder Tony Donatelli reached the 100th career game mark in the USL First Division.

With four games to play in regular season, the Montreal team is in 5th rank of the USL First Division, with 36 points, one point ahead of the Rochester Rhinos.

The Impact will play its next match in Cleveland against the City Stars, at Middlefield Cheese Stadium, at 2 pm (USLlive.com). The Montreal squad will then be back at Saputo Stadium to match up against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Wednesday, September 9, at 7:30 pm (CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, USLlive.com).

That was a tough game, hardfought and well won by the Impact.

dos Santos was yelling at Peter Byers to close quickly on the defenders, towards the end of the game - he didnt; and he was yelling at the whole team to push forward, as a unit - they didnt...the Montreal players are going to have to smarten up about this bunker mentality when they are winning games, it just feels so Santos la Guna, sigh.

I am warming to dos Santos. His coaching is starting to tell in player movement on the field.

In fairness Byers clearly popped a hammy or groin on that first long run and avoided anything but layoffs afterward... but I agree in general.
