De Rosario got the goal And a nice goal it was or should I say typical DeRosario goal. If that one doesn't get goal of the week something is really wrong! Good game and I was hoping they would steal 3 points even being down to 10 men but at least the Revs didn't gain any ground on them. TFC really toughed it out for 40 minutes being down a man. that is a long time to be a player short. Houston up 3-0 over DC and Dallas up 2-0 on KC so it getting a point this weekend is better than nothing.
bingham
In my humbel opinion the best dispaly by TFC this year, a "teambuilder". Give those two young lads a shot plus Gala and we have a potential play off surprise
BringBackTheBlizzard
Can't watch beyond about the 40 minute mark on mlsnet.com unfortunately so hesitant to comment too much but the Columbus and New England away games have been a big improvement on the Dynamo and RSL ones (San Jose is a bit of an outlier in climate and playing standard terms) so progress appears to be being made where midsummer away games are concerned. That needs to translate into points gained a bit more though. One issue lumbering over the horizon now could be Attakora vs Gomez vs Sanyang for playing time. If it doesn't go Attakora's way there will no doubt be weird and wonderful theories from the usual suspects on here about bias against Canadians at TFC but it is a good problem for Chris Cummins to have right now and it should mean no niche role for Marco Velez if Gomez and Sanyang can do the job consistently. Ivan
^ Sanyang is a midfielder so I don't think he fits into that equation, but I will go as far as saying that it could be Attakora vs. Gomez vs. Garcia vs. Brennan (Serioux moving out wide) for playing time. IMHO, Attakora & Gomez have looked much better than Garcia. And lets not even put Velez in the same sentence. However, those who know much more about these things than I say that Garcia is a great organizer at the back and keeps things in line, even if his man manages to score a goal every game - like last night. Hard to explain TFC's lineup decisions. I mean, how do you explain OB White's playing time after three shockingly poor appearances where he has done basically nothing while Gabe Gala is the best player on the field vs. River Plate and can't get a sniff? BringBackTheBlizzard
It depends who you listen to on Sanyang:- http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20090303&content_id=221287&vkey=news_t280&fext=.jsp&team=t280 Toronto FC announced Tuesday that they have signed defenders Emmanuel Gomez and Amadou Sanyang to MLS contracts. Gomez was acquired from Samger Football Club of the Gambian National 1st Division, while Sanyang arrives from Real de Banjul Football Club in Gambia. As per league and team policy, financial details were not announced. He was a holding midfielder the one time I saw him play for TFC Academy and I think (can't be bothered tracking it down) he was quoted as saying he preferred midfield last week but was happy to play wherever the coach puts him, which suggested to me there is still a good chance he'll wind up playing as a defender eventually. ag futbol
Little squad rotation can't be a bad thing. Attakora's physical style has seen him take a few knocks. Gomez seems to have a similar mentality. In the short-run, you can play them back and forth. Nana seems to be the better player right now, but Gomez definately has some rust/room to grow by getting playing time. Long run you can play them both once they develop more maturity Garcia stays i think simply because he's the only defender we have who will organize the backline. Less than ideal, but for now i think we're stuck as nobody else has that quality. Actually now that i think of it, you could always do this: Brennan---Garcia---Gomez---Attakora Appologies to Wynn and Serioux, but gambling too often on defense is never a good thing. Jimmy B, could be added next to that list once we find someone who can play left back. Some of those guys could then be rotated into the midfield to give a few players rest. BringBackTheBlizzard
There's supposed to be a Dutch-Haitian left back called Lesly Fellinga on the verge of signing if Steven Goff (Washington, DC's answer to Ives Galarcep) is to be believed:- http://twitter.com/SoccerInsider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesly_Fellinga

Ivan
quote:Originally posted by Rudi White didn't play. Yes, I realize I didn't really write that correctly. What I meant was, after River Plate, WTF did OBW get into two more games and Gala not? Also, BBTB, how did Sanyang look compared to the rest of the Academy players? BringBackTheBlizzard
Definitely the best player on the team that game, in my opinion. Highly athletic, very good at distribution and strong in the tackle.

I will second that, I saw him play a couple of times with the Academy and he definitely stood out (although I was purposely looking for him knowing that he was just biding time until joining the big team). He's very comfortable with a physical game, even at such a young age and playing against men. I'm pleased with both Gambians in the early going (Gomez looks the more raw of the two, despite being slightly older), although it's still early days yet. Gomez played nervously early against River Plate but improved as the game went on. It's too bad Sanyang wasn't allowed to play against River Plate, due to his age, as it would have been a great opportunity for a first blooding but I thought he looked good on Saturday night. I've got high hopes for them both. db

I think "looked good" is overstating things a tad. He's obviously got a lot of strong physical attributes, energy and enthusiasm to get stuck in but he was also running around pretty aimlessly on the defensive side at times. That's not to be unexpected from an 18 year old making his first appearance but it doesn't square with saying he "looked good". I'd like to see TFC make an effort to move him along to the point where he can be contributing consistently but I'm not expecting him to be starting games any time soon. Last year Ibrahim was our new young wonderkid who got too much expectation placed on him too quick and has largely failed to keep developing from what little I've seen this year. Heaping any expectations on the Gambians seems equally premature.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sanyang get a start later in the season. He looked good! Perhaps one can say he looked good for a barely 18 year old playing in his first MLS match but so be it. I thought he looked good. Lots of promise. A crucial tackle in the box late in the game. He showed poise. Sadly, with no reserve league, it's difficult to move any young player along slowly as there is no venue in which they can do so outside of the academy. A terrible move by MLS. Guest Ed
That was 2 points lost by Chad Barrett. Christ, that was textbook defending on a whiner by the young NE right back (who was most impressive). Why did OB go so high again? I would take Alston (10th overall) over the current TFC right backs in a heartbeat.
