Ian Kennett
Can anybody comment on the attendance levels at the Gold Cup games? I wonder if a case could be made to co-host the tournament in Canada in 2011. It seems that some of the crowds were small at this years tournament whenever the US or Mexico were not playing. Any thoughts? Cheers!
squizz1402635577
Well, I can tell you first-hand that the double-header of Jamaica/Costa Rica and Canada/El Salvador didn't exactly set Columbus, Ohio on fire. I'd peg the total attendance at about 9,000 at 22,000-seat Crew Stadium. It's possible that those games might draw better at some places in Canada... but then, I am firmly and sincerely convinced that you could fill BMO Field with a matchup between any two nations on the planet. superbrad
In LA, the stadium appeared sold out at the Home Depot Center.
shawn_strat
I think some games in Montreal could do very well also.

CanadianSoccerFan
I was surprised at only 24K in Phoenix. I figured they were good for at least 40.

CanadianSoccerFan
quote:Originally posted by snake 24k in phoenix is an excellant number for the sunbelt. Allow me to elaborate. Phoenix is full of Mexicans and the doubleheader involved Mexico. Compare that to the other games involving Mexico in cities with large Mexican diaspora. That's why I see 24K as a low number. Avram Grant
If you're interested, I wrote this blog post about television ratings for the Gold Cup. Univision is pulling in some very strong numbers for the tournament so far. http://canadiansoccerblog.ca/2009/07/26/the-gold-cup-a-joke-perhaps-but-a-popular-one/

Soro17
Maybe Joe Arpaio was hanging around the stadium - enough to keep most people away. Seriously, Phoenix is a terrible sports town. Plus that game was all the way out in Glendale. Driving from one side of Phoenix to another is a nightmare. If it was in Tempe the crowd probably would have been better.
