Saskatchewan Huskies vs. TFC Academy

Recommended Posts

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are gearing up for a big season where they hope to finally qualify for the post season in the Canada West.

The last few seasons have seen the Huskies come agonizingly close to reaching the playoffs and this year it seems they're more determined than ever to change that.

They'll be hitting up Toronto for a couple of pre-season games against the TFC Academy. Good practice for sure! They'll then take on the York Lions before returning West for some games against the Alberta Golden Bears.

awesome. i love this. finally some good crossover/cooperation between leagues. this is exactly what we need to do in order to grow the game in canada. the west needs to be pulled in to the fold too. the u of s playing TFC Academy will give them some exposure. we have soccer out west too you know!

(lived 10 years in Saskatoon - home of University of Saskatchewan - for all you folks in T.O. that might think it's in Regina...)

Update from Toronto...

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's soccer team lost 4-1 to the

Toronto FC Academy in a non-conference game in Toronto. Third-year

Jerson Barandica-Hamilton scored the Huskies goal. The Toronto FC

Academy team had five MLS Toronto FC players in the game including

Danny Dichio and Chad Barrett who each scored two goals.

Looks like the Huskies added a 1-1 draw to their record v. TFC Academy as well. (Must have been a 2 game series). They lost 3-2 to York University. Not a bad trip truth be told (considering the goals in the 4-1 loss to TFC A. came from Dichio (2) and Barrett (2).

Wonder if there will ever come a day when we can showcase Sask soccer at the national level.

If U of S is the only university in Sask with a soccer program, why does the program suffer from such a lack of success?

Yes there is strong competition in Canada West, but why can they never seem to make the playoffs? Is it the the coaching? administration? lack of ability to attract Non Sask players?

Regina has a mens program as well. This team has been getting better each of the last few years but it is very tough to get ahead in Canada West. Player recruitment is also improving but still has a ways to go.

Regina has only a women's program

According to the TFC website, U of S played the Junior Academy (U-16's).

Wow thats scary. And not a good advertisement for CIAU soccer if that is correct. These kids are younger than the team that would have went to the canada games. Meaning that these kids would have been 15-16, at most, whereas the CIAU players would be men.

Yes, but we also know that the TFCA team (whether it was Senior or Junior) was bolstered by a few first teamers.

We know that Dichio and Barrett played (and scored), but I'd expect guys like Ibbe, Edwards and Gala also got a run out in the 4-1 game.

The 1-1 scoreline of the second game leads me to believe that there were no first teamers playing in that one.
