But I agree that we shouldn't read too much into those results. It gives us a better idea of the level of play of some of our players and it's a good indicator but I wouldn't get overly excited with a GC win or final appearance. After all Panama made the final in 2005....
CanadianSwede
Yea, we played alright but nothing exceptional. El Salvador was given a few good opportunities outside of the box which a team with a better strike force would have better capitalized. I believe that we'll play well against Costa Rica. I have always been of the proponent that Canada plays better against better opposition and while the Salvadorans beat Costa Rica, I rate Costa Rica as a better team. youllneverwalkalone
quote:Originally posted by BearcatSA After watching this match that's my assessment of Simpson as well. I think he would serve us better as a latter stage sub than as a starter, regardless of the scoreline. I took particular interest in watching Johnson because I haven't seen him play in awhile. He has some good instincts out there with an eye for playmaking. He nipped in a couple of times in a quick and stealthy fashion to force turnovers. He came close on that first half near post attempt on goal but really should have done better with the run and shot in the second half. Though he shows a lot of hustle he seems to get brushed off too easily in 1 v 1 defensive situations, both for quickness and for muscle, and he doesn't strike me as a guy who has that extra gear to beat a fullback to the line and cross. He's too much of a lightweight to be considered as d-mid candidate at this level but he looks like a guy who could play an attacking mid/second striker playmaker type. I agree about Simpson, and I'm quite surprised/disappointed because he had some great reports out of K-town. I could be wrong, but I think Johnson would be fine moving over to the left, which would open up a spot for Humey in the future. (INF, snubbed again ). I thought we could have used Iain on the set pieces.

Once Canada started playing the clock they were awful and a better team probably would've tied it at least. Suspicion of hand-ball on Canada in the 93rd, but they never showed a replay of the incident so I'm not sure. But either way, Canada were lucky in the last 5 minutes. El Salvador didn't look at all threatening until the last 25 minutes, and even then, we were able to keep their actual opportunities to a minimum. brownbear
I thought we played very well for the first 70-75 minutes. Great games by JDG and Atiba. They dominated the midfield. Gerba is enigmatic, but sticks his toe in at the right place at the right time. An aside: I watched the game online (justin.tv) and the Spanish commentator called DeGuzman "Jackson 5" the whole game (in reference to JDG's do), as in "there's 'Jackson 5' with the ball." It was hi-larious!

BrennanFan
The game was beautiful. Nothing like a V`s road trip. Canada played a very patient and intelligent game. Slow build up, minimizing possibilities of mistakes. Totally nullified any chance of quick counters from El Sal. Solid defending as a team. I was very impressed by JDG`s commitment to being our defensive Mid. Unlike WCQ, he was not trying to do it all. He left Bernier and Hutch get forward more, which is very mature of him. With a dedicated deGuz sitting in front of the D, it makes us super difficult to break down. Stalteri and Kluka stayed back as well after the goal. We played smartly and are FINALLY showing the ability to hang onto leads and kill games. Thought Hutch had a strong game, and Bernier had his best ever performance for the Nats. We sang his name 2 or 3 times! Bernier! Great awareness from Gerba on the goal. Realistically, we have not yet faced a worthy opponent, so it`s hard to judge how good we really are. Jamaica and El Sal are not on our level. Also, we are not finishing as much as we should- will be interesting to see how this affects us when we play a stronger team. But overall I think we are improving with each game and have plenty left going into the last game and the next round. NAKAJIMA NEEDS TO PLAY! I_AM_CANADIAN
I'm sure it was no coincidence that you got shown in the highlights... I agree on Bernier for sure, and I was impressed with Johnson, just too bad he wasn't able to actually make or score a goal. He caused a lot of problems coming down the right side anyway. Califax
What a game boys. I'll skip the match breakdown, (since everyone has done a job already) and say that it was good to spend some time with you boys. We converted a bunch of Crew fans and had them wearing red and cheering along. Also, Trillium managed to get us custom ordered poutine... needless to say the V's presence was felt... Tuscan
We played absolutely fantastic! We were the better side on the night, and it showed so many times. The Salvadorans never looked overly organized on the attack, maybe only getting that one shot from outside the box to really test Sutton the whole night. We, on the other hand, probably should have bagged 3 before all was said and done. Bernier's miss was shocking, but I'm sure 9 times out of 10 the ball would have found the back of the net, so he's forgiven []. DeGuzman ran the pitch in front of the D like a wizard. While he wasn't the most effective in the final third, his work in the midfield created so much space and so many opportunities for everyone else on the pitch that it's a pity it didn't lead to more goals. The only player who seemed a bit out of it was Simpson. While his hustle was spot on, as was his marking and tackling, he seemed to have some communication issues throughout the night, and didn't really produce like he did against Jamaica (for at least the first 10 minutes he was on in that game). Ali G, once again Johnny on the Spot, and while he didn't do much else, that extra touch was all that mattered on the night. He's going to produce for TFC. I wish he would have scored in the 3rd minute when he was right in front of goal, that opportunity where he JUST about turned the defender to get the shot off. I like the fact that he's willing to take shots from outside the box when no one else is up there to help him. Every once in a while those long shots are crackers that look world class. Kluko had another great game. He never fails to impress me. Stalteri was quite solid despite the one brainfart in the 2nd half. McKenna is just plain solid, the guy is a great player. Jakovic is suprisingly solid as well. I was skeptical about his ability to perform at this level, but he does not look out of place. Jackson didn't seem nearly as effective as he did against Jamaica, but the dynamics of the game were slightly different this time. He was up there alone rather than being partnered with Ali. Against Jamaica he was dangerous, and with Ali up there it gave him options. He seemed to have trouble finding space, unlike against Jamaica where they had to cover him AND Ali. I really hope Simeon bags one for us this tourney. Great game, boy do I look forward to the Ticos.

I would like to see Jackson AND Gerba together for a decent stretch as I bet they could be a handful together. Jackson is a natural replacement for either winger if we are in need of a goal in the second half. I hope Hart gives him enough time to create a little magic out there. Tuscan
If it's tied in the 60th minute tomorrow, I'd love to see a 4-4-2 with Jackson subbed on for Bernier. Keep Johnson on, he's got hustle and bustle like nobody's bizniz. In a 4-4-2 I could see Jackson scoring for us, given more than 10 or 15 minutes left in the game.
