JamesW
I'm willing to chip in a small amount ($25 or so) and help get this done.
CanadasBest
I'm actually leaving work early today for once and I'm going to go to the award shop I normally deal with and get some ideas.
CanadasBest
So I took a look at my local shop and we looked through several different manufacturers catalogs. I could not find any decent Gold Boot trophies. Actually all the soccer specific trophies were kind of chintzy and not suitable. I then suggested to the owner that we were looking for something Canadian, and she suggested a Canadian company that has some really unique and beautiful glass blown awards. http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA151.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA152.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA153.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA154.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA155.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA156.pdf http://www.stregiscrystal.com/upload/catalogue_page_image/2008CA157.pdf What do you guys think about something like that? Or do we want to keep it simple and just do up a plaque with our logo and such?
Tuscan
Can St. Regis do customized creations? Perhaps if they are skilled enough to make one of the spheres with something an inner design that looks like a red maple leaf, that would be smashing, and a very unique award for the players as well. ray
If we are going with an award, it would be nice if it had the Voyageurs logo on it. What about glass etched with the logo? Do award stores do that kind of thing?
CanadasBest
Yes. St Regis also makes a bunch of things like that as well. Here is a link to their catalogue: http://www.stregiscrystal.com/Canada/PRODUCTS.asp They have a nice Maple Leaf, but take a look at the price. Count on another $150.00 for the engraving and setup fee. http://www.stregiscrystal.com/Canada/Search_detail.asp?product_page=1&product_id=AWS082&search_type=keywords&code=&keywords=Maple&price=Any%20Price They also have a great maple leaf plaque as well: http://www.stregiscrystal.com/Canada/Search_detail.asp?product_page=1&product_id=AWP404-3304&search_type=keywords&code=&keywords=Maple&price=Any%20Price

I too would be willing to contribute some money to the trophy. If we are unable to present it to Christine at the game where she breaks the record, we should wait to do it "at home", and make sure we get some media coverage for the presentation. greenfield
forgive me for not looking this up, but can someone who knows post the all time goal/cap records and how far along Gerba and Stalteri are from breaking them so people have an idea of the timeline we're operating on? CanadasBest
Gerba is 5 goals away from breaking Mitchell's record. I'm not sure about Stalteri's Caps. His wiki page says he has 77, the record is 82 by Randy Samuel.
KAS
quote:Originally posted by Tuscan The Golden Boot idea is great, along with the addition of a scarf. Maybe a shirt, but definitely a scarf. I wonder if there's any way we could set up an actual presentation to the player when the milestone is reached? I suggested adding the scarf and shirt because there should already be some around, so it would be an easy add-on that wouldn't cost much but still mean something. Given that there is a new scarf drive going on, then they should come from there. Just add an extra three (Gerba, Stalteri, Sinclair) to the order. I have no idea if there are still shirts around, or in the needed sizes. I guess Razcle would be the one to ask about this? As for presenting them in person, that would depend on the location of the key game, the player and the time of year. Stalteri's record (if achieved) would be known about in advance, so even if the game is played abroad, there is usually a few Vs in attendence (even in Estonia!) who could do it. Scoring records are harder because strikers can go cold for many games. If Gerba is still with TFC, then getting something to him afterwards would be extremely easy. With Sinclair, you can just get one of the Vs in Burnaby to track down her parents and find out when she will be around - presumably after the WPS season. A same-day/post-game presentation is ideal, but if impossible, then shortly afterwards is still fine since they would not be expecting it anyways. KAS
quote:Originally posted by gwallace76 Gerba is 5 goals away from breaking Mitchell's record. I'm not sure about Stalteri's Caps. His wiki page says he has 77, the record is 82 by Randy Samuel. I don't know if there are any friendlies planned for after the GC, but I would say that it is unlikely that Stalteri will break the MNT caps record in 2009, but only a serious injury would stop him from breaking it in 2010. Gerba is a different story. The remaining GC games will be against tougher opponents - and maybe only one more game. I think that any friendlies we play in the next 11 months will be against countries that are going to the World Cup and willing to pay the costs inorder to get games in for their preparation. These will obviously be tough countries to score against, and they may take place in Europe and/or in the MLS playoffs or off-season - so Europe-based strikers like Friend and Jackson would be more likely to play and may permanently supplant Gerba. I am not entirely convinced that Gerba will score 20, and it is also possible that someone like DeRo might get there first. Of course, if he gets a hat-trick against Honduras then I am just going to edit this paragraph out Sunday morning. Sinclair is virtually 100% certain to score another goal and likely will very soon. So, when preparing to buy awards, the order should be Sinclair, Stalteri, Gerba - with Sinclair's needing to be done ASAP, Stalteri's probably in the Spring of 2010, and we can take a wait-and-see to Gerba's. Since these should be personalized, I don't see any advantages in ordering the three trophies together (scarfs/shirts are obviously different). This means that the costs can be spread out over time, which means that these awards can be of high quality.
KAS
quote:Originally posted by dsqpr I guess that Ali G. probably won't get 5 more goals in this GC, but it is not out of the question. A hat trick against Honduras and anything is possible. Now is definitely the right time to be thinking about awards for Ali and Paul. I think it is clear now that neither Gerba or Stalteri will set records in 2009. I still think that Stalteri has a great chance of breaking the caps record in 2010. We will have to see a list of future friendlies (number of friendlies, quality of opponents, and time/location) to get some idea of Gerba's chances in 2010. It is really difficult to measure Gerba's chances, but I think that we should continue this thread with respect to getting Stalteri an award as that seems to be almost a certainty and the more time we have to plan the better. quote: Awards for the women should be discussed in the Women's forum. This forum is for the Men's National Team and Players. I knew that someone was going to say that. In this particular case, I disagree. There is not nearly enough traffic on the women's forum at the moment to organize something like this. With a fairly hefty cost and the possibility of having very little time left, this idea needs to reach as many V eyeballs as possible to have any chance of getting done. It also does not make sense to seperate what is really the same project (the Vs handing out awards to NT players for remarkable accomplishments) between two forums. The possibility of purchasing more than one award at a time (to save costs and time), needs to be considered, so everything should be coordinated through one thread. I suggest that a permanent pool be established from which all future awards be purchased. The pool would be a regular beneficiary of V fundraisers (such as selling shirts/scarves, or passing a hat around at a pub) so that last-minute scrambling to find the money can be avoided. The pool could be used to purchase an award for any NT player (male or female) who sets a new record or performs some other great accomplishment which the Vs feel is worth giving an award for.
