Gerba signs with TFC?

Rumours abound that it will be official in the next 24 hours, and that he will make over $250,000/ year. Good for him if it's true, good for TFC if he scores, and good for our Nats if he can find a semi-permanent club at which to ply his trade.

There's going to be a fair bit of pressure on him to perform at that salary. Hopefully the manager (present and/or future) is smart enough to just let him do his thing. And let the goals justify the pay. Though DeRo and Serioux would be wise to keep an eye on him as well, perhaps remind him he's a "professional" footballer after all.

2 sources:

Gerba signed for 3 yrs - $900,000. Guaranteed.

He'd given up hope on latching on with another euro club given "his reputation" so he's cashing in with TFC. But he does have an exit clause should an offer come his way while with TFC. The wording initially proposed was rejected by MLS, hence the delay.

Wonder how DDR feels about that? How many years did he toil in MLS before getting that sort of payday?

Higher than I expected, but not by too much. And it will be money well spent if he can bring some goals TFC's way and allow the team to make the playoffs (in spite of their shaky start).

Ali G at TFC.

^ if DeRo had paid his dues overseas, who knows what overinflated valuation would be attached to him? Gerba was the ultimate journeyman and he's worth more than a quarter million per year to TFC.

Regardless, Gerba will make less than DeRo and, if he is committed to his fitness (the biggest knock against him) he might be more impactful than DeRo has been.

Wow. I would have probably offered him half that, like what other options does he have? But what do i know, maybe he'll light it up (i frickin' hope he does!)?

Yeah, I suspect they have overpaid as well, though I guess we'll have to see in due course.

I think Gerba will be a good addition but if true, $250 000 is once again Mo overpaying for a player.

Well, it will be the first time I'll get to watch him game in/game out, as opposed to his MNT appearences. Truth be told I have never been sold on him, but if he proves to have the same strike rate as he showed in his most club stint, he'll help this team quite a bit. I hope he has a great run.

If the rumours are true that TFC is trying to lure Julian to TO, then this may be another big angle. DD, Gerba and Julian were tight and really enjoyed playing together.

I think Gerba will be a positive signing for TFC.

The rumours ARE true that TFC has made a serious offer to Julian.

The other truth is that he's not prepared to make the move to MLS at this point (for which I applaud him...this league is not suitable for players of his ability at this stage of their career.

Give it 5 years.

While $300,000 is a bit excessive, I have hope that he will provide the finishing touch that is so very lacking right now. Assuming he gets a starting role, who do you have him replace? You know who my vote's for...

Can't be bother googling for a link but TFC did back try to get Radzinski back in 2007 prior to him signing for Xanthi in Greece with fieldturf or money being the sticking point depending on who you choose to believe. At 35 I suspect it's too late in the day now.

I did read him half-jokingly say he would consider Canada one day but not TFC because of the turf. But I assumed that would be moot if the $ was right. Anyhow, not soon.

While i don't have the salary list in front of me, a few ideas come to mind:

- We're paying for this with allocation dollars

- Somebody else on the roster is being moved

- Mo Johnston is relatively certain the cap is going up a fair amount next year. For a team with no DP TFC has the highest payroll in the league (made possible by allocation dollars).

- Edit - random idea: TFC makes Dero the mid-season DP and pays him the same amount of money. Cap hit = 200k less, money goes to Gerba.

Yea Radz is happy in Belgium. In any case he told me during my interview with him that he would NEVER play for TFC if they continued to have field turf.

i guess that must be another reason why tfc dont have a marquee player on their roster
