Gold Cup 2009 Preliminary Roster Predictions

We usually see a 25-30 man preliminary roster released prior to the shorter, final lineup, so here is my take on what we are likely to see (NOTE: not my preferences):

Possible Preliminary Gold Cup Roster

Lars Hirschfeld (possibly will decline - in the process of signing)

Greg Sutton

Kenny Stamatopoulos

Josh Wagenaar

Mike Klukowski

Kevin McKenna

Adrian Serioux

Andrew Hainault

David Edgar (possibly will decline - in the process of signing)

Paul Stalteri

Richard Hastings (MOTM vs Cyprus)

Dejan Jakovic

Adrian Cann (played 90 vs Cyprus)

Eddy Sidra (playing 90 in your debut vs Cyprus has to count for something – also played RB where we have been very thin in recent years)

Issey Nakajima Farran

Julian de Guzman

Josh Simpson

Marcel de Jong

Nik Ledgerwood (played 90 in Cyprus next to JDG)

Atiba Hutchinson

Will Johnson

Patrice Bernier

Jaime Peters (started in Cyprus)

Simeon Jackson

Olivier Occean

Andrzej Ornoch

Ali Gerba (possibly will decline - newly signed, nagging injury, club wants to keep him)

Injured/ Club Conflict</u>

Rob Friend (injured?)

Dwayne De Rosario (already declined)

Asmir Begovic (club wants to keep him)

Daniel Imhof (possibly finished with the Nats?)

Tomasz Radzinski (possibly finished with the Nats?)

Emergency Callup List</u>

Charles Gbeke

Nana Attakora

Ante Jazic

Kavin Harmse

Chris Pozniak

Pat Onstad

Antonio Ribeiro

Players I could do without seeing </u>

Kenny Stamatopolous (we know what he can do, and can’t do)

Richard Hastings (god love him for trying, but we have too many older guys in defense as it is, and his spot could be filled with someone like Nana)

Adrian Cann (see Stama)

Paul Stalteri (by still being in the picture, his leadership means that the new, younger crop of leaders doesn’t get a chance to form)

Tomasz Radzinski (Josh Simpson offers the same positions to Canada (attacking mid-fwd), seems fully healed and has so many more years left for Canada)

Players I would like to see called in</u>

David Hoilett (dare to dream)

Ethan Gage (with a little encouragement and some decent opportunities I think he could really become something)

Carlos Rivas (volante for top tier Chilean team deserves a sniff at very least)

Nana Attakora (should be our first emergency defensive replacement based on age and recent club form)

I think Marcus Haber should see a call! I would say Edwini-Bonsu based on their U20 WCQ performances but Haber has been scoring in USL.

Gage, Haber and Attakora are the future all are currently starting on their clubs at young ages. Gage and Attakora are going to be really special I think we already know that, Haber I haven't seen too much but I've heard he has been the caps best player some matches.

I don't think Gage and Attakora should be getting called as "emergencies" though, I think they just deserve a call period. They are both starting on good clubs and making impacts. Both have outshone Canadians on their clubs who have received calls in the past (Nash, Harmse, Brennan, Reda)

If we are thin at forward then Haber should get called to be a sub.

I think one of Gerba or Occean will show but if they don't then a combo of Simpson and Jackson up front is ok with Haber off the bench.

My preliminary roster:

GK: Hirschfeld, Stamatopoulos, Wagenaar

DF: Klukowski, McKenna, Hastings, Stalteri, Jakovic, Hainault, Dominic Imhof, Attakora

MF: I. Nakajima-Ferran, Julian de Guzman, Simpson, de Jong, Daniel Imhof, Peters

FW: Radzinski, Occean, Jackson, Ricketts

I'm expecting a lot of people to turn down the call, particularly the North Americans and guys going for a contract. Hirschfeld I think will show up contract or no because the guy's been a warrior for the Nats and, if a transfer isn't actually agreed on yet, he may want the chance to impress potential suitors.

I'm also expecting Dominic Imhof to come because it would be completely insane and therefore meshes nicely with the way the CSA operates.

ST: Simeon Jackson, Josh Simpson, Kyle Porter, Riley O'Neill

MF: Atiba Hutchinson, Daniel Imhof, Julian de Guzman, Nik Ledgerwood, Marcel De Jong, Issey Nakajima

DF: Mike Klukowski, Kevin McKenna, David Edgar, Paul Stalteri, Richard Hastings, Jaime Peters

GK: Josh Wagenaar, Greg Sutton, Adam Street

Let all the guys who are currently in the middle of their season stay with their teams, until MLS starts acknowledging the Gold Cup and not continuing play through it.

^I think Edgar will be there along with a whole corp of our younger players, and I'm really not that upset about it. Throw Diesel, Big Kev, Hutch and The Guz in the mix along with Lars and I don't really see a down side. Some fast, attacking football.

Not sure if Hastings will be out. Somehow I thought he was nursing a groin injury toward to the end of the year but I could be thinking of someone else.

Sutton has other priorities just now and as much as the GC could help shop him around if I was him I'd stay 100 miles away from the tourny. He's jinxed.

Could see Imhof getting called in to do the business as I can't really think of anyone else who can once you remove The Guz from that role (as we seem to do with the NT). Hutch? Sure if you ask him to but not quite in the same way. And besides it wastes him.

Any word on when the roster will be announced?

I want the best roster possible but with a youth flavour. What I mean by that is if two players are in the same calibre the youngest one is first priority. For example if it came down to Hastings or Edgar, Edgar is chosen well hes probably better anyways haha. Maybe a better example is Serioux and Jakovic, Jakovic gets chosen for the start.

I PRAY Imhof comes and starts! Seriously the guy has been starting in the bundlesliga for two straight seasons and getting pretty good reviews! Let De Guzman run wild on these CONCACAF teams, now that De Rosario isn't coming we will need that more than ever. I think Will Johnson is going to be a great player this tournament, not spectacular controlling games but just a solid guy.

My realistic XI

guys in brackets are the replacements if they dont come or their subs

-------------------Hirschfeld------------------------

Stalteri---------Edgar-------McKenna----------Klukowski

---------------------Imhof-------------------------

Hutchinson-----------------------------------Simpson

-----------De Guzman-----Johnson-------------------

-------------------Jackson--------------------------

Rest of the 11:

Wagenaar

Hainault

Jakovic

Ledgerwood

Nakajima-Farran

Occean

De Jong

Bernier

Peters

Gage

Gerba

I think it is realistic to expect all of those players to accept calls. But I think we all know that Hastings is going to be there for sure somehow.

What about Ugo Ihemelu? He is eligible for Canada again

Two years ago we had a defense problem now suddenly it seems as if defense is maybe our strongest point depth wise. We didn't know who Stalteri's replacement would be and now suddenly Hainault, Peters, Ledgerwood and Nana are all possible replacements and Eddy Sidra played there last match.

Also to add to Johnson, I remember him during the CONCACAF u23 qualifying playing awesome as a central attacking mid. Now put the Gold Cup MVP next to him. :D

Should be good. Especially since a ton of attention will be on De Guz and both those guys can put some long range bombs on net or slip the ball to Jacko.

Can't wait for the Gold Cup!
