Rocket Robin
Result of the Saturday June 14th, 2009 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and Serbian White Eagles played at Lamport Stadium in Toronto at 3:00pm. 31 min…Toronto Croatia Hugo Herrera GOAL…Herrera gets pass at 8 yards and two defenders have him covered for header. A White Eagles defender heads ball back towards goalie Dan Pelc but Herrera gets to ball and chests ball in from 2 yards into open goal. Final Score:………Toronto Croatia……….1…………….Serbian White Eagles………..0……….. Attendance was about 500 on this warm day with a bright sun in the south west. Although both teams play their home games this season at Centennial Stadium, this game was scheduled at Lamport Stadium because it’s the only moderate sized Toronto area stadium with stands on opposite sides of the field to separate the rival fans. There looked like there were more Croatia fans at today’s game as they were designated the ‘home’ team. Both teams had plenty of chances to score today. Two chances where the White Eagles put the ball in the net were called back. At 53 minutes TC Hugo Herrera was injured at the TC 20 yard line but SWE players continued up the field and eventually ‘scored’ on a chip over the goalie but referee Justin Tasev was 80 yards up the field looking at the injured player get treatment. At 89 minutes, SWE Kiril Dimitrov knocked a ball into the net from 3 yards but the offside flag was up. A SWE player was given the final Yellow card of the game for harassing the referee’s assistant who raised the flag. Just a minute earlier TC Johnny Bustamante received a Yellow card at the center line for knocking over SWE Carlos Zeballos although both had only come onto the field a minute earlier. I counted seven Yellow cards. The other two SWE cards were for kicking the ball out of bounds after having play whistled down. One of the TC cards was for taking too long in taking a freekick deep in their own end. It wasn’t really a rough game. Sandi Matika earned the shutout for Croatia. He had to make some key saves and his defence limited the number of rebounds. Dan Pelc of White Eagles was just as sharp. Both goalies palmed the ball over the net a few times on hard shots. White Eagles made three subs at 69 minutes to put fresh legs on the field and apply more pressure which they did but Croatia looked for the counterattack opportunities and it opened up the game even more. The CSL league rules allow up to seven subs in a game. My deciding to set one long 90 minute half with a count-up clock turned out to be a great idea for keeping track of time (this is the usual method of regular announcer Ennio who couldn’t be here. Dave Rumack was the PA announcer). I was laughing at the multi million dollar scoreboard at BMO Field a few hours later having the clock stop dead at 15:00 minutes and the graphics for # 14 of Dwayne DeRosario showing the name of # 3 Nana Attakora during the introductions and also taking a full two minutes to announce the Red Bulls goal despite all the video replays available to them. Rocket Robin
Result of the Sunday June 14, 2009 CSL game between Brampton Lions and Italia Shooters at Victoria Park in Brampton at 3:00pm. 67 min…Shooters Aundrae Rollins GOAL…Shooters Vince Forestieri 220 yard freekick from right is low and Lions goalie Kevin Doyle stops on dive to left but Rollins pokes in rebound from 4 yards to left side of net over fallen goalie. 85 min…Lions RED card…Andrew DaSilva earned it for fighting with Shooters Carlos Rojas. ………..Shooters RED card…Carlos Rojas earned it for fighting with Andrew DaSilva. Final Score:…..Brampton Lions……….0…………..Italia Shooters………..1…… Attendance was about 300 on this warm afternoon with sun and clouds alternating until the second half when it was all clouds. Lions kept the kids and parents in the stands after two Dixie teams played before this game by having them play a mini game at halftime. This game was filmed for later broadcast by Rogers Community channel at 7:00pm on Monday. I don’t expect any viewers except those in the Brampton area will be able to see this game. Referee Manuel Orellano called a lot of free kicks and took a lot of verbal abuse from the players without giving out cards until the fight at 85 minutes. Both teams had many chances to score a few times in this game. I found the home of a few players as I hadn’t seen Brampton Lions so far this season. The 2008 CSL Rookie of the Year Adrian Pena now plays for them. He won the award while he played with the TFC Academy for three quarters of the year until he was suspended. I spoke to David Guzman after the game. He played for Toronto FC in their first year and last year played for the Chicago Premier PDL team (who were in town to play the Toronto Lynx a few hours later). He must have been the fastest player on the pitch. The 2008 league Top Scorer and Most Valuable player Daniel Nascimento is back as a striker. Camilo Benzi earned the shutout for the Shooters. He was sharp but the defenders of Aundrae Rollins (who started in the back), Daryl Gomez, Gaston Orique, and Fitzroy Christie played well to cut down on the Lions chances. A new DJ team replaced the couple who did it the last few years. This new group had to play music every time the ball went out of bounds. They played a mix of songs at halftime. “Bollywood”, “Italian”, “Portuguese”, “Latin (music)”, then for Greece he played the Grease (movie) medley. They were cut off by Rogers before the end of halftime so they could film an interview. I missed the Warner Brothers sound effects of the old DJs. My advice: Don’t play “We Are The Champions” when the home team loses! Rocket Robin robing@eol.ca My Toronto Lynx report will have to wait until tomorrow. Eric
I went to see this game too, very intense. Brampton was unlucky and didn't deserve to lose but they need to capitalize their chances, I think they integrated a few new faces and it will take a couple of games to assemble a good attacking line-up. It was a big win for the Shooters, an other team with many new faces to be assemble into a solid squad. The coach is young and needs some time to understand the league and the teams. I don't like the music during the game either, it feels like a hockey game but then again when it's about soccer in north america, anything goes.
