Ottawa Fury

Recommended Posts

I decided to spend a lovely Sunday evening watching PDL soccer for the very 1st time and was impressed at some of the skills on display, mostly from Ottawa. Attendance was a little over 200 which was too bad, the team probably deserves more people through the turnstiles. I know the Victoria Highlanders and FC London are doing well from that perspective.

Only thing not good was the scoreline: Ottawa won 9-0 and it could have been more. It was all one-way traffic and Westchester only had one sub and a right back (#2) who was absolutely hopeless.

I'll be back out there at some point this season; would be good to see a few Vs there too.

Personally, I have a hard time getting behind a club like the Ottawa Fury for a few reasons. First off, I'm one of those people who prefer the Euro-names for clubs. I find "Fury" to be a little too cartoonish and "amateur". I realize that as a PDL club they are by definition, a developmental team but still, appearances are important. Second, I haven't read anywhere about the club having any ambitions of moving up to USL-1 or 2. I think at least a part of the Highlanders' recent success can be attributed to the fact that the fans know that the club is serious about moving up in the professional ranks. If the owner of the Fury were to suddenly come out and say that he was seriously considering making a push for USL-1, I think you'd see a marked increase in attendance and overall interest. Finally, the fact that they're out in Algonquin isn't really ideal either. Surely a more central location could be found; perhaps through a partnership with either Carleton University of the University of Ottawa?

This is not to say that I don't wish the Ottawa Fury all the best. I applaud the fans that get out to the games and hope that the club continues to do well and that interest for soccer in this region continues to grow.

IMPRESSED

I watched a Fury game on Rogers last night. The game was from earlier that day (July 12) I believe. Perhaps the day before (July 11).

Anyways, it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. They picked apart New Jersey like grandma would a bad piece of sewing.

Their passing was spot on. Their shots were deadly accurate. Their organization and pace was jaw dropping. They whooped NJ 8-0.

I was absolutely awestruck. It was like night and day compared to watching a TFC game. I wish TFC would play with their organization and skill. An organized team is a DEADLY weapon.

Their record is now 11 - 0 - 4.

It's time I and other Ottawans started supporting this team properly.

Missing two women's games:

Tomorrow night the women are home to Laval Cometes at Algonquin at 7:00pm. Last game was a tie away, but Laval this week have lost at least three to the U20 camp and another to the Fury since the tie. And given the playoff structure it's good timing to for the Fury to hit Laval depleted, as the Fury women have a limited margin for error after their 0-2 upset to the Lynx.

The women also have another game against Buffalo Flash Saturday at 7:00pm which will also be a good one to catch. Rochester in the double-header on Sunday will be a walk as they are as usual in the back of the bus with zero wins this year.

The Ottawa Fury PDL Squad host their first playoff game in club history against the Ocean City Barons tomorrow at 7 @ Algonquin College. Tomorrow we'll be giving away T shirts to the first 100 fans through the gates.

Alex D, Will Beauge is a great local talent to watch for in the future. Beauge was the 2008 CCAA Player of the year and had a 2 week trial with the San Jose Earthquakes in February. He was also the team's MVP last year, received PDL All-League and All-Conference Honors and should receive the same accolades when this season concludes. His path to success has been different than most players in the national pool but should he continue his development and enter a higher tier league, there is no reason why he shouldn't get a serious look at a call up in the future.
