Guest Ed
Sorry, I forgot to mention Robert Kerek. I will try to find a site that explains the German 'division' pyramid. It is quite a handful to say the least.

Guest Ed
^ You might say so but it is still quite confusing. Under the Oberliga (5th division), there are Verbandsliga, Landesliga and Bezirksliga. Depending on the region in Germany, a team from Verbandsliga could be 6th division with Landesliga and Bezirksliga below, or a Bezirksliga team could be 6th division in another region. Guest Ed
Kevin McKenna interview, from FC Koeln's official site (freely translated by moi): "PUMPED FOR THE NEW SEASON" Kevin McKenna Kevin McKenna has been back in Cologne for the past week. The FC pro was with the Canadian national team in the Gold Cup in the USA and lost 1-0 in the quarterfinal against Honduras. Before that, Canada was unbeaten, with two victories (1:0 against Jamaica; 1:0 against el Salvador) and one draw (2:2 against Costa Rica) and group leader heading into the knockout phase of the tournament. For the FC-Cologne.de website, McKenna took time after his return to Cologne to describe his experiences in the Gold Cup and his impression of the changes in his club. Fc-Cologne.de: Kevin McKenna, are you happy to be back in Cologne, although you would probably have been happy to first be in the final? Kevin McKenna: "Yes, for sure. It was a crazy experience in the Gold Cup in the USA. But we would have loved to be in the final. Unfortunately, we were eliminated in that quarterfinal 0:1 against Honduras. The goal on a penalty kick. We played well but could not score. We had some bad luck as well - I hit the post in the 85th minute. That was naturally a huge disappointment, but now I am back here and look forward to the new season". Your team mates have been in training since the end of June. Is that a disadvantage for you in the fight for a starting place? "No, I don't think so. I played with my national team in the Gold Cup and am in good form. I look forward to meeting the boys and training with them. For me, it is very special to play in the national team, therefore I wanted to take part in the tournament in the USA, even though I would miss some of the club's preseason" . FC Cologne has a new coaching team with Zvonimir Soldo and Michael Henke. What goals will you set with the new trainer? "I would like to be part of the squad and play as often as possible. I do not enjoy sitting on the bench. I will speak with the trainer and see how my chances are for the new season. I felt I was an important part of the team last season. I hope for the same this season". Have you followed the recent changes at FC-Cologne? "Naturally, I was often on the Internet while in the US looking for news. I will meet with the new players in the next few days. And I am excited about that. Maniche is a world class player, with Champions League experience. That says enough about his quality". We should also be pleased with his attitude towards the MNT.
Guest Ed
Straith starts and plays the first half for Energie Cottbus as they romp to a 20-0 win over some low level club. He looks like he could well be a starter in the Bundesliga 2 when the season opens, which is terrific considering it was less than a year ago he was with their U19's. Hirschfeld with the shutout goes 90.

Hirschfeld with the shutout goes 90. What do you base him being a starter on? Cottbus played most of their young players against this very low team and announced they would do so beforehand. I don't think Straith has featured much in their other friendlies. In their previous friendly against a better opponent though still not that high, 4th division Babelsberg, Straith wasn't even on the bench. They seem to only bring him to games against very weak opponents. He does seem to be doing ok in that he will play with the first team in friendlies where they are using their B team but I think he will be a reserve team player at the start of the season. BTW Lars stopped a penalty in their game with Babelsberg which ended in a disappointing for Cottbus 0-0. Tremmel is still not gone either and is training with the team though he is not getting any playing time. This is a strange situation as he wants to leave but his contract is valid and no team as yet has been willing to pay the reasonable sum that Cottbus wants for him. Cottbus seems to have turned the page but if they can't get him transferred by the August 31 deadline the keeper position could be very competitive. My impression is they will stick with Lars as long as he plays well because Tremmel is leaving sooner or later but they do not have a solid backup to Lars so if he screws up Tremmel could regain the starting position. Guest Ed
Straith has had an impressive 9 months in Cottbus. Going from U19's to starting day in day out for the amateur side in Regional League Nord. I give you that he is starting against the smaller clubs but noone else from the amateurs is getting a hint of playing time at the back. We'll see. Not saying that he hasn't had a good 9 months but I don't see much evidence of him being a part of the 1st team coming season begin let alone being a starter. When they are playing decent teams mostly he is not even on the bench. It is, however, promising in the long run that he is at least getting a look against weaker competition and seems to be the first choice among the defenders on the reserve team. Mazha
It has to be somewhat impressive for any 18 year old central defender to get training time (preseason) and some game time, with a Bundasliga team at that level. Is any other Canadian his age training and playing at this level? He mightn't get much playing time but the practise would surely be usefull. Most teenage players brought on by senior premiere clubs are usually strikers, outside mids, the odd full back but Ive not seen many teenage central defenders. Good luck to Straith. Reading his wiki entry again it actually has two separate birthdates for him, 20 April in his personal information and Sept 11 in the text. The CSA site has Sept 11 as well so assuming this is correct then he would indeed be 18 presently.
Guest Ed
Looks like Hirschfeld has the leg up on veteran Gerhard Tremmel as number 1 keeper for Energie Cottbus as Lars has been picked by Cottbus manager Wollitz to start against FC Magdeburg on Saturday evening. Wollitz was particularly impressed with Lars stopping a penalty in the 0:0 draw in the friendly with Babelsberg so he gets the start in their first round DFB Pokal (German FA Cup) match. Grizzly
McKenna played 90 and was rewarded with a yellow card for his efforts as Koln beat 5th division Emden 3-0. It is now 2-1 for Cottbus. The goal was scored when Hirschfeld went for a harmless cross but collided with his own defender. Stalteri and Ledgerwood were on the bench but did not play as Monchengladback beat FSV Frankfurt 2-1. Grizzly
Imhof plays 90 as Bochum beats 4th division Lotte 1-0 in a very poor performance. Fernandez did not play. Not Canada related but 6th division SpVgg Neckarelz managed to give Bayern a scare despite Bayern playing a 1st team lineup. Bayern didn't score until the 51st minute and with Neckarelz going down to 10 men while down 2-0 they still managed to score one on Bayern. Final result was 3-1 for Bayern.
