University athletes make the grade

When it came to getting the job done on the court, in the pool or on the field, six Toronto-area university athletes earned A+ grades.

Awards, personal best performances and championships highlighted a sensational year for a handful of athletes this year at Ryerson, Toronto and York.

So when the universities reviewed the candidates for the prestigious athlete of the year award, the choices were fairly obvious:

University of Toronto swimming sensation Colin Russell was a cinch as the Varsity Blues top male.

Russell, a freestyle swimmer from Oakville, also was named CIS male swimmer of the year after he shattered three meet marks, including a pair of national records, and racked up seven medals in as many races – three golds, two silvers, two bronzes – at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport finals.

Russell also helped Canada to a fifth-place finish in the 4x200m relay and a sixth-place finish in the 4x400m at the Beijing Olympics.

U of T's top female award went to Megan Brown for the third time in four years.

Brown, from Guelph, dominated in distance running, reclaiming both the OUA and CIS cross-country individual titles. She won them two years ago but took last year off due to illness. Brown was also the OUA most valuable runner, winning a gold medal by finishing 34 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

At York, soccer was the big word. Francesco Bruno and Stefania Morra were named athletes of the year in a banner season for both players and their teams.

Bruno received York's top male honour after a remarkable season capped by a CIS championship, the program's first in 31 years. The third-year midfielder was named CIS player of the year, chosen first-team all-Canadian, OUA player of the year, an OUA first-team all-star and the York Lions' team MVP.

He also is one of four finalists for the national university athlete of the year award to be announced later this month.

Morra led the CIS in scoring with 18 goals and was named CIS player of the year. After guiding the Lions to top spot in the OUA West, Morra was also named a CIS all-Canadian, OUA player of the year and an OUA West first-team all-star.

Over at Ryerson, the Rams top male athlete just happened to be the No.1 university basketball scorer in Canada.

Boris Bakovic averaged 27.3 points per game and became Ryerson's career scoring leader with 1,492 points in just three seasons.

Soccer player Andrea Raso made history at Ryerson as the first female athlete in school history to be named to an all-Canadian team. She also was named to the CIS and OUA all-star teams.
