Hart Named as Temporary Head Coach

I'd like to see the TD and head coach positions kept seperate, filled by 2 different candidates. The Technical Director position is supposed to be a long-term, developmental job while Head Coach is a short-term, results-oriented job. If your coach isn't getting the job done you don't want to be shackled by the fact that he's also the TD. Then you're trying to fill 2 different positions if you fire the man holding both jobs.

But yes, for now Stephen Hart is the best option for the Interim job.

Glad he's popular with the players and all and glad the players enjoyed the loving so much that they have gotten some decent results for him in less than IMPORTANTE competitions. But he is still a high school coach in my books. He's been in the TD role for 1 year right? Haven't heard a sniff about what he's up to. And his youth team appointments show he has less imagination than his predecessors.

I agree with you. But to play devil's advocate, the guy a lot of people are calling for, Pekerman, had a very similar type resume to Hart before he took over for Argentina. If Hart can get results, I'm happy to give him a chance. Gold Cup is important because it can swing our ranking around and get us invited to other major tourneys. I do agree to JP though, if he were ever to take the job fulltime, he should resign as TD.

^ Pekerman won a few U-20 World Cups before he got the main NT! what did Hart won? please don't compare high school coaches with world class coaches.

But I agree that he is the best interim candidate we have right now and I also agree that both jobs should kept separate.

Two things: I think he is better than Mitchell(really going out on a limb here) and should have taken over from him after the Honduran disaster in Montreal! Secondly, no matter what the results are in the Gold Cup, I want to see someone, with decent credentials from outside brought in as the new MNT coach!

As long as the CSA is still paying Mitchell's contract, Hart is the best we could hope for as a head coach. At least with Hart we'll have players wanting to play in the Gold Cup rather than not wanting to play for Mitchell. Hopefully he can string some wins together this summer so that our ranking can move up and it would look like a half decent job for someone good to want to take on.

I guess the danger is that he does well in the less competitive Gold Cup and because of this is retained for the WCQ where he and the team crash. Of course that is a risk one takes to some extent with any coach, experienced or not though the better the coach the less the risk. Also some guys are naturally good coaches who just need to be given a chance whether or not their resume is impressive. I am also in favour of bringing in someone with credentials and experience but if Hart can put together a long run of impressive results in both the Gold Cup and a large number of friendlies maybe he should be given consideration. The last two coaches had poor WCQ records but their friendly results were not very impressive either.

^Sorry, I didn't mean to compare their resume. More like their relative resume. Both were association coaches, not professional club coaches prior to being hired. (I still think Hart should be made to coach in the CSL :D). But he has won matches in charge of the MNT, which is more than we can say for Mitchell.

I think he did coached a pro club in Argentina's Primera for a few games only but is not mentioned in Wikipedia,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/José_Pekerman

But yes I agree with you that all these CSA staff coaches should coach in CSL and prove they can really coach, I would give Hart London City and wait for the miracle! :D

Agree with Grizzly that if Hart does well during the GC he should also be evaluated with some friendlies until the end of the year.

The danger, as I see it, is Hart will be able to retain our best players because he's a popular coach among them. At the same time, all the Hex teams in the GC will probably show up with weaker teams and we might benefit from that to make a good run (not a bad thing for me as a fan). But we might give too much credit to Hart for another GC run and this could be misleading (just like 2007 was misleading in term of our evaluation of our team). So, yes, if he does well good for him but don't be too quick to judge him base on that tournament.

I wish Stephen good luck.

The players, on the whole, should now be satisfied, at least for this tournament. No excuses now, right?

If Hart's team performs well, then there will be some reason to wonder if he really is the right guy for this group. Time will tell. He's not a "big name" but it might not be necessary if the players respond to him and his staff. I just hope he picks the best staff possible to help him and the players succeed.

More of the same. Hart was right there for every practice and game in WCQ. He is responsible for our failure as well.

I wanted someone with clean hands, but i guess hart is as good as it's going to get.

Assistant coaches have no say on Head Coaches discissions, so I don't blame him at all for the WCQ failure.

its not going to matter if SH wins the Gold Cup.

I can guarantee you all that the CSA is going to do a truly thorough search for the next MNT head coach which will likely commence in earnest after WC2010 concludes.

If SH wants to be considered for the job and does another good job with this GC squad, I'm sure he'll be in the mix but I've been told by senior CSA people that "the process will not be highjacked" when they look to hire their next coach. They will follow the same process that they went through with Morace and I'm very confident that there will be good candidates and many of them will be affordable.

I don't buy that. He appeared to be doing more 'coaching' on the sidelines than Mitchell.

And (I know I am venturing into dangerous territory here) he is popular amongst the current ruling clique on the men's team, which is just f*ing peachy for them, but may not be a very good thing for us long term.

It will probably matter to the players though. They complained that Hart was removed after reaching the S-F of the Gold Cup - you don't think they will push to keep him if they were to win it? And if their push is ignored, already we will have the first in the traditional litany of excuses for failure before we have even started, which basically is what happened with WCQ.

Hart was part of Mitchell's staff for World Cup Qualifying, and therefore should shoulder some of the responsibility of our dismal performance. All he has to his name is a good run at the 2007 Gold Cup, which in a short tournament like that, can easily be attributed to luck(Greece at Euro 2004). But it wasn't even enough luck.

How long is temporary? I know this may be cynical, but I'll say that he'll be in charge until the World Cup. And why not? It's not like we'll be playing any games. after the Gold Cup, until the World Cup, it would not surprise me if we played no games. It is the CSA, and I'm jaded.

I agree with you G-L but I have been told to my face that they want the process to be wide open. If SH does a great job and the players advocate loudly for him, those will be factors that work in Stephen's favor (to balance the fact that his resume would be significantly less illustrious than some of the people that will also be applying for consideration)

maybe he'll pull a dick cheney and hire himself as coach.

but seriously, i think he makes as much sense as anyone at this point. hopefully the rubes at the csa will be doing a proper search for an international caliber coach, but if hart has success in the meantime, then maybe the job is his to lose. i wouldn't mind seeing them bring in someone like a simoes or beenhakker though, but i'm sure the csa will find a way to screw this up somehow.

any clue as to who applied last time or if anyone has applied so far?
