gator
I don't like to mix politics with soccer, but I will! Did anyone see Owen Hargraves meeting with Stephen Harper in London at the G7 Summit? Don't know who I dislike more! It's just absurd to me to see our PM in these tough times taking a time out to meet with a guy who turned his back on playing for his country! Anyone see this? jonovision
If you want to gag, read the quotes from Harper http://www.pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?category=1&id=2503
Eric
Maybe he doesn't know Hargraves plays for England, it's only soccer....who cares!
gator
My God! That is enough to make you puke! I love the quote about "all he has done for Canadian soccer"! And Mr. Prime Minister, that would be? Is Harper that stupid, or just not really up on the situation? I know it's old wounds opened, it really is absurd though! Thanks for the article! Guest Ed
Nice of Stephen (my MP) to take time out to meet one of Calgary's (and Canada's) greatest athletes!! I hear Obama also wanted a photo op with OH!!

Portuguese Sensation
I can understand people being angry with Hargraves choosing to play for England ahead of Canada, but at the same time, I honestly don't blame him. Given the state of the CSA, why would he want to play for Canada when he had a better opportunity elsewhere? I commend the guys that proudly wear our National Team Jersey - but I don't blame the guys who don't, given the circumstances.

If Fernandes, JDG2 and OH are all playing for Canada in WCQ...we are going to South Africa regardless of the CSA. All other arguments are bullshit. Guest Ed
quote:Originally posted by Soju "Thank you, Owen, for all you have done to shine the international spotlight on Canadian soccer.” April fools day indeed. Well this quote isn't bad. Brings focus on Canadian soccer for a moment. Might lead to some questions being asked. Or dancing. “Owen Hargreaves is one of Canada’s most famous and accomplished international athletes,” said the Prime Minister. “Given soccer’s massive worldwide appeal, it is certainly refreshing to note that one of the sport’s brightest stars is Canadian.”

All other arguments are bull****. You can throw Ms. Leroux in there too. I believe the quote is "walk a mile in my shoes." Making a livelihood and career from the game is no small matter to be taken lightly, and I am no man to judge anyone. Band-aid manoeuvres like Mitchell and Morace are merely focal diversions from resolving the core problem - CSA reform. Everything else is like arguing over who gets first class when the plane is spiraling downward towards earth. The real culprits are the ones who refuse to admit they left because it was the only thing to do.
RamR
I wouldn't be surprised if Harper sees being PM of Canada is only a stepping stone to something more illustrious in international circles. He too may well have turned his back on Canada had a "better" opportunity been available to him. Two peas in a pod if you ask me.
Guest Ed
Would you nitwits stop dropping your political pearls of wisdom. This is a Men's National Teams and Players forum, not a tribute site to Jack Layton and the Liberal jackass.
gator
^Harper was the one who mixed politics and sport! Whether you like him or loathe him you must admit his quotes and timing are misguided! I think most V's would say they didn't support OH and feel somewhat betrayed by him, the Prime Minister is portraying him as a national sporting hero, I don't think many of us here agree no matter what side of the political fence you're on! Guest Ed
I will not "admit his quotes and timing are misguided". What he said was spot on. He never said he was a national sporting hero.
TFC07
Oh great! Now let's get Mr. Ignatieff and JDG2 (Since both of them are from Toronto) take a pic together. How exactly is OH good for Canada soccer? I highly doubt soccer fans outside of Canada know OH is even from Canada.
Guest Ed
^ He opened doors for many more Canadians in the Bundesliga 1 and 2. Tam Nsaliwa and Nik Ledgerwood very definitely gained from that as both were accepted on trials at German clubs. Prior to OH in Bayern, no Canuck would have got a sniff in southern Germany. loyola
Ed, you probably know better than me but weren't Hirschfeld and Mckenna with German clubs at the same time as Hargreaves? It looked to me as a link (Nierdorf) between Alberta and western Canada and some German clubs more than Hargreaves opening the door for them. gator
"Thank you Owen for all you have done to shine the international spotlight on Canadian soccer"! Maybe I'm missing something Ed, but I really fail to see where he shone the spotlight on Canadian soccer, he had his chance to, he chose to bail on our national team, maybe that's what he meant! I along with many here don't even consider him a Canadian as far as soccer goes! You have a point about possibly opening doors for other players in Germany! As much as you're entitled to your opinion, bringing up the OH situation is verboten at this stage. I understand you are relatively new here, but please do not get into this. You simply do not understand how this board feels about the issue. We are die-hard CANADIAN supporters; representing another country other than Canada is almost treason. (Imagine a player who is another Cristiano Ronaldo choosing England.) And oh yeah, I emailed our PM about his comments ...

Let us just say that 'Cottbus' and 'FC Hollywood' are in 2 different worlds when it comes to rep. Hargreaves landing and staying with Bayern gave the 2 other Niendorf proteges the open door that they needed. Hirschfeld left Cottbus to go back to play indoor in Edmonton; McKenna was crucified for being the goat in his Bundesliga debut and shipped off the the Orkley's or some such crap club.
