The League Opener at BC Place in March 2011 Seattle Sounders versus WhiteCaps in BC Place 60,000 fans The Retractable roof open and sunshine Is 60,000 fans a reasonable expectation? I'd love a repeat of the June 19, 1983 stadium opener (that was 60,342)! Would MLS put the 2011 League Opener in Vancouver much like they had Seattle host this year's kickoff? Much like the League Opener next year will probably be in Philly it's fun to dream
Keegan
Yes MLS will probably put the league opener in Vancouver and yes I would fully expect a sell out if they opened the stadium

mtl-supporter23
Yes you can only imagine considering new BC Place will have a soccer capacity of 20,
piltdownman
^24k actually, but the renovations haven't been done yet. If ticket deposits stay strong my guess is they will change the 'curtains' at the end which would allow about 4-5k more people on each end if needed. Blue and White Army
There won't be any "hard" renovations to the lower bowl in order to cap capacity for the Whitecaps. BC Place will still also be used for the BC Lions, and will still be able to accommodate 60,000 upon demand (e.g. for the Grey Cup). As such, the stadium could very well have extra capacity for the 2011 home opener.

People are in fact mad that the Sounders refuse to increase capacity from their 27,000 when they could easily go to 32,000 like they had at the opener or even higher. Having demand be higher than supply is a tactic I think the Whitecaps will follow.

I think it would make more sense to put the opener in Portland from an MLS perspective as that would be better for the American market.
Johnnie Monster
Our roof might not be completed in time for the season opener, so expect First Kick to go to Portland. Play can still go forward in BC Place, but the glitz and glamour of the roof won't be there.
piltdownman
I think either way, it will be the two of us in the first game. If we kick off in Portland we need to bring down an army.

spiral
If the Whitecaps draw 30,000 plus per game, would they open the entire Lower level or do as the Lions do and open sections on the Upper level? What do soccer fans prefer? Seating lower in the end zone or higher between the goal lines?

The whole lower bowl will come into play from the first game. The 20,000 figure helps create demand by seemingly limiting supply.

It seems from the picture that the roof thing either covers the entire upper level or nothing, so I don't think they will be raising the roof unless they think they could fill the entire building. Also, a question for the southsiders. Have you petitioned to have your section be the one behined the net so you don't feel lost without somewhere to litter your empty cups?
