Full-Time

Recommended Posts

The Canadian Soccer Association has fired Dale Mitchell as coach of national men's soccer team.

`We are committed to the future of our men's national team program,' CSA president Dominic Maestracci said in a statement. `We have made this decision to move the program in a new direction.'

There was no immediate word on Mitchell's replacement.

Up on TSN and Sportsnet...

edit: They've updated the story on TSN...

"A 3-1 loss in Honduras last October ended Canada's qualifying attempt with two games remaining and Mitchell was soon answering questions about whether he would resign."

Hehe, that would have been me :D

^ Agree with the last two posts, he's done alot of good for Canadian soccer, most of it as a player, this was never going to work with the MNT after the u20 debacle! It's too bad the CSA screwed up so bad and didn't have the balls to admit their mistake, as in after the Honduras game in Montreal! Anyway, best of luck to Dale and let's hope the CSA can get the right guy as the next MNT manager!

better late than never.

I must say this is a good sign that the csa is listening. i'm sure that we got their attention with our fire mitchell press release, and they just waited for a certain amount of time to go by before they pulled the trigger.

good way to start my weekend.

this might sound strange coming from me but, as much as this is the right thing to do and I'm pleased that the team will be led by another coach, I do want people to remember that Dale is (arguably) the best player in Canadian history. This doesn't tarnish his playing career.

Rather than dance on his grave, I prefer to see this as a sign that the CSA might actually be announcing that results do matter and there must be consequences for failing to meet expectations.

i just wish this would have happened on Sept. 11, 2008 (the night after they lost 2-1 to Mexico). It would not have saved the WCQ campaign (that was already toast) but it would have sent a strong message that results matter and excuses are out the window

From Dobson:

quote:The search for his replacement is already underway. But it will take a while. CSA top gun Peter Montopoli told me the next man may only be an interim head coach to get the team through a series of friendlies and this summer's Gold Cup. They seem to be determined to take their time in hopes of getting the right man.

It will come as no surprise to hear that the man they're looking for must have the technical ability required to prepare the Canadian team for top-quality opponents.

... only if they can grab someone under market value. [}:)]

I'll believe it when I see it. Either we're serious or we're not. Hiring Mitchell after the Simoes selection and the U20 debacle showed we weren't. Keeping Mitchell on after 2-3 games in the semis confirmed we weren't. Will things change? All signs point to "probably not". Sorry kids.

Very well said. Even though I had a hand in preparing our press release demanding his firing, I'd also like to remind everyone that this is not personal and that Mitchell is still a very important figure in Canadian soccer history (and ideally, that history will focus upon his playing years, rather than his latter coaching years).

He was a good player, but hardly the best IMHO.
