What's up with Philly 2010?

Recommended Posts

This time last year, we already knew the name of the Seattle franchise, had seen a logo and a jersey and everything seemed to be in full swing with their inaugural MLS season just a year away. So I ask the question, what's going on in Philly? There seems to be no news coming out of there, nothing of note on their website. For a team a year away from starting play, they are ominously quiet. Would this not be the time to start branding themselves???

Your thoughts.

i was of the same opinion last week when the Vancouver and Portland franchises were being announced.

I did a google search to find updates on the new stadium and it appears that, as of 2-3 weeks ago, construction on the facility is now underway.

Apparently, they will be announcing the team's name and logo next month.

I'm sceptical as to whether they'll be ready or not in 2010. They have exactly one year. They'd better get a move on. Of course, if worst comes to worst and their stadium isn't ready until a few months into the 2010 season, I'm sure they can find another suitable venue. Or not. Not sure as to the stadia situation in Philly.

Team name, colors and logo to be unveiled this Monday during a ceremony starting at 11:30am.

I'm interested to see which direction they go in with the name... traditional European, a la Toronto FC, DC United, etc., or traditional ridiculously stupid North American, a la Tampa Bay Mutiny, Dallas Burn, Columbus Crew, LA Galaxy, Kansas City Wizards... I can keep going.

Let's hope it isn't one of those faux European names ( FC, United, Real) That always reeks of "wanna be cool kid" desperation. I agree that North American names can be atrocious (Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Toronto Blizzard...) but not all are bad. Better to be yourself than pretentious.

Lame North American >> Faux European.

If the name has any kind of tradition or origins (Philadelphia Union seems like a good example), it's better than some kind of euro-transplant that is entirely out of place. No team in MLS is an "FC" in any really sense; "Real" Salt Lake aren't royal; D.C. United didn't unite anything.

Chicago Fire is a good, solid, nickname.

I always thought the United in a clubs name had something to do with a breakaway/new club established in a city where a club had already been established? Either that or just a simple name choice implying a close, tight relationship between the club and it's fans (in the sense of "we are united in support" type thing).

FWIW, I think a lot of the nicknames in all North American leagues over the last 15 years have been pretty stupid, not just MLS.

You're right, "Real Salt Lake" is an absolute abomination, I'm pretty sure there's a consensus on that. However, I'd rather see the Philly team be called something like "Union FC" (even if it isn't totally authentic) as opposed to some cloying, soccer-mom-pandering treacle like the Philadelphia Strong or the Philadelphia Sparkle Cats or WTFever.

Let's just be glad that we ended up with Toronto FC and not one of the other finalists, Inter Toronto.

My vote is for Sparkle Cats. I don't give a toss if teams I don't like have stupid names. I wish Kansas City and Dallas had stuck with Wiz and Burn. All the better for laughing at them. I just don't want a team I support to be called THE Vancouver ...um...well, I can't top Sparkle Cats. What I like about Toronto FC and DC United is you can't put THE in front of the name, but obviously Réal Salt Lake is just ridiculous.
